Help or advise please....

I have a 2009 SXT 2.8 Diesel UK Model

My problem is that when setting off with slight RH lock on steering I get a single loud clunk from what appears to be the LH front wheel. It also does it when reversing with RH lock. Just a single bang. when travelling and turning right no issue at all. All the ball joints have been checked by garage and 3 different ones say they are all ok. The driveshaft has been changed today for a different reason but still have this clunk.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is this a 4X4 Nitro? Is your Nitro engaged in 4WD when this "Bang" happens?

The 4x4 in the Nitro is part time - there is no center differential. It is designed to be used only on slick surfaces.

Have looked "Online" and found several (not Nitro) that have experienced "Bang" noises after having alignment to their vehicles. Any chance you had your Nitro aligned recently?

stabilizer bar bushings?

simple grease point when wheel hits the lock position?

Looks to me that if the Nitro is placed on a supported lift (with weight of vehicle on the wheels) you should be able to duplicate this "Bang" and correct. Good Luck and let us know when you figure this issue out. Hopefully it wont be expensive.

STEERING SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS CHART



POPPING NOISE

1. Loose steering gear mounting fasteners.
1. Check fasteners for proper torque and retighten as necessary.

- 2. Loose outer tie rod mounting nut or jam nut.
2. Check fastener torque. Replace nuts as necessary and tighten to specifications.

3. Loose intermediate (steering) shaft coupling at gear input shaft.
3. Make sure coupling is fully seated on gear input shaft. Retighten or re-seat as necessary.

- 4. Worn tie rod (outer or inner).
4. For evaluation and correction, see DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING. -

5. Worn axle half-shaft.
5. For evaluation and correction, refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .

It was aligned about 6 months ago and there was no issues immediately following it. the noise started not long after having a new wheel bearing fitted on the same side. Since then it has had new lower ball joint, new drop links and anti roll bar bushes, replacement drive shaft. All in order to try and find what is banging. As said if moving forward with slight RH lock it bangs just once. It wont do it again in forward travel until I reverse. Then it is just another single bang. But only on RH lock (doesnt have to be much lock). Move forward again and bang until the next time i reverse.

Sounds like the wheel bearing is not adjusted correctly, cracked bearing race or bearing defective. I would start over and back to the beginning to where your issue began. Wheel bearing hub

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION FRONT END NOISE

1. Loose or worn wheel bearings.
1. Replace wheel bearings.

2. Loose or worn steering or suspension components.
2. Tighten or replace components as necessary.

Found the problem today. It was the bush on the lower control arm that the shock absorber mount bolts through. Bush was virtually disintegrated when removed. Anyway since the arm was off replaced all 3 bushes

Great News! Thanks for posting a resolve to help others. Looks like this should have been caught and found much sooner? Anyway you have many new replacement front end parts now installed so hopefully you will not have anymore issues there for a long, long time. Did not really know that Nitro had front suspension issues as you have had. Your post should help others where to look FIRST in the future! Again Good Luck with your Nitro....
