Mazda MX-5 Miata Production Hits 900,000 Units

Feb 04, 2011

The Mazda Miata has long been a favorite of those on the hunt for a fun, reliable sports car. Now, Mazda has set the bar even higher for the competition, with the 900,000th Miata fresh off the assembly line yesterday. “Mazda’s iconic modern sports car has hit a new milestone: Yesterday, the automaker built its 900,000th MX-5 Miata in just over 21 years,” writes Left Lane News.

Still, setting records is nothing new for the Miata. “The Mazda MX-5 Miata originally took the Miss Popularity crown when the Guinness World Records certified production reached a total of 531,890 cars in May, 2000,” reports the San Jose Examiner. And why wouldn’t it? Not only is the Miata our 2011 Best Sports Car for the Money, it’s also a hit the world over, with US consumers making up the bulk of Miata buyers, worldwide. “Nearly 45 percent – more than 388,000 units – of those were sold in the United States since the car launched in 1989,” writes Mazda.

Stellar sales are great for Mazda, but what exactly does that mean for shoppers looking for a two-seat sports car? Well, a new, redesigned Miata may be in the near future. “As we head toward the next production milestone of one million units, Mazda is committed to further evolving the MX-5,” said Seita Kanai, Mazda’s senior managing executive officer of research and development. “We will refine its fun-to-drive character as well as further enhance its environmental and safety capabilities.”
