Mazda3, BMW Z4 Being Investigated for Steering Problems

Jul 06, 2010

Owners of 2007-2009 Mazda3s and 2003-2005 BMW Z4s may soon find their cars under recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating complaints with each vehicle's power steering systems.

“Although the specific circumstances vary for each of the vehicles, in either case the loss of assist results in significantly increased effort to turn the steering wheel,” says Autoblog.

Autoblog continues by stating that, “The Z4 has an electric power steering system that seems to have issues at higher speeds and temperatures.” However, “The Mazda uses an electro-hydraulic assist system and Mazda issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) in 2009 related to this issue.”

Manufacturers issue TSBs when a problem is reported enough times to warrant notice, but is not considered in need of a full recall.

“NHTSA said it has 33 steering complaints for the Mazda3's and reports of three crashes tied to the problem. It has received 107 complaints for the Z4 and one crash report,” reports USA Today.

If a recall is issued it will affect over 290,000 Mazda3s and almost 50,000 Z4s
