Polaris plant now producing Indian and Victory motorcycles

Polaris plant now producing Indian and Victory motorcycles

Mar 13, 2016

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa | The three assembly lines of the Polaris Industries plant in Spirit Lake are now exclusively producing Indian and Victory motorcycles.

The other Polaris motorcycle line, the sporty three-wheeled Slingshot that began production here in late 2014, is now being produced in nearby Milford, with plans calling for that line to be transferred to a new plant in Huntsville, Alabama, when construction is completed later this year.

This is the first time in nearly two decades that the 400,000-square-foot Spirit Lake facility has focused exclusively on one product. The plant produced personal watercraft when it opened in 1994, and had made nearly every other Polaris since then.

“We are out of off-road vehicles all together,” director of operations John Dansby said. “So our plan is to grow the motorcycle business from this facility, and keep all the capacity we have for that purpose.”

With about 1,000 employees, the Spirit Lake plant is designed to “level off on production of about 900, two-wheel units per week,” Dansby added.

The Indian line includes the middle-weight Scout, which has its own production line, while the other Indian models are produced interchangeably on another line, as are the Victory bikes on a third line.

In addition to the optional accessory packages, each line sees a variety of different chassis with very different manufacturing plans and checklists that are delivered to the assembly crews at computer stations all along the line.

Assistant plant manager Anthony Stecker, who has been with Polaris about nine years, agrees with Dansby about the importance of growing the motorcycle business.

“Even with the downturn in motorcycle sales nationally, our volume in this facility has still grown year over year,” Stecker said.

Sales are growing, Dansby said, because the brand is gaining momentum.

Polaris has been manufacturing the Indian brand for only a couple or three years, he said. “But we’ve been building Victory for a while. And we’re seeing growth year over year. The Indian and Victory brands are now the oldest upstarts in the business.”

Speaking of assembly line crews in both the Spirit Lake and Milford plants, Dansby said, “they love the product. And they support the product with their purchasing dollars.”

“We have a check-out program, as well, so employees are able to enjoy Polaris products on the weekends with their families. It gives them an opportunity to enjoy the products -- as well as share them with their friends. It’s also a tool to introduce them to the public.”

Thousands of old and disused motorcycles have been thrown away onto a mountain of the two-wheeled vehicles in south China.

Photographs reveal a huge tangled mess of hogs and off-road bikes, littering every empty area of ground next to the major bypass road under the Nantou Toll Bridge expressway in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.

The remarkable pile includes electric bikes, motorcycles, tricycles and sedans piled on top of one another.

The bikes were confiscated by the Shenzhen police under the strictest motorbike ban ever, reported Huanqiu.com, an affiliation to People's Daily Online.

The city of Shenzhen has been tightening laws to combat illegally operated or unregistered side cars on motorbikes.

Starting from this month, the ban will apply on motorised tricycles - a very popular mode of transport in China - as well.

Almost 18,000 vehicles have been detained just within 11 days in the city and a leaked document from the local police authority suggested that officers would be awarded cash for each detention, reported on.cc.

Back in 2008, police in the Yangdong district of the city demolished 14,277 motorbikes as part of another significant crackdown.

Last March in one scrap yard in Hangzhou, 100,000 vehicles were piled up after being taken off the road because they did not meet the national emissions standards to remain on the road.

A previous report said some 16 million vehicles will be ready for the scrap heap in China by 2020.

Zero Motorcycles B-Day Celebration

Zero Motorcycles B-Day Celebration – Launches 10th Anniversary DSR

06/10/2016

Zero Motorcycles 10th Anniversary DSR

Could you believe Zero Motorcycles has been around for 10 years already?

The company began in 2006 as Electricross, an all-electric motorcycle company started by former NASA engineer and moto enthusiast Neil Saiki. Fast forward 10 years, and the Scotts Valley, Calif., company Zero Motorcycles is one of the leading electric motorcycle manufacturers, currently offering a six models – the S, SR, DS, DSR, FX, and FXS.

To celebrate its birthday as the longest-running electric motorcycle company, one more model was recently added to the lineup – the 10th Anniversary DSR.

“At a time when electric vehicles were little more than a far-flung idea, for even the most tech-savvy riders, the founders saw the potential to transform an industry,” said Zero Motorcycles CEO Richard Walker.

“Over the last 10 years, we’ve passed one milestone after another to redefine the motorcycle experience by eliminating the typical heat, complexity, noise, vibration and maintenance headaches of gas-fueled bikes. The result is exhilarating, and we’re still just getting started.”

The 10th Anniversary is exclusive; only 50 will be produced. The bike is a base DSR upgraded with metallic black paint, custom graphics, and a full line of accessories.

Zero says “It’s the first model to include a factory-installed Charge Tank, allowing customers to expand their riding opportunities by using the increasing network of Level 2 charge stations. As a versatile dual sport, the 10th Anniversary Zero DSR is a nod to Zero’s off-road roots.”

“We estimate that Zero riders have offset about 13 million pounds of CO2 and saved over $2,000,000 on gasoline,” said Abe Askenazi, Chief Technology Officer. “While the economics and environmental impacts tell a compelling story, the real advantage to our customers is the thrilling magic carpet ride.”

Zero says it is also offering a special gift to buyers. Through the month of June, purchasers of a new 2016 Zero S, Zero SR, Zero DS, or Zero DSR will receive a $1,000 gift card. Customers purchasing a new 2016 Zero FX or Zero FXS will receive a $650 gift card. (This offer does not apply to 10th Anniversary Zero DSR.)

“We’ll also cover the cost of all the clutches, oil filters, spark plugs and oil changes for your new Zero over its entire life,” joked Askenazi. Zero motorcycles have no clutch or oil and require no routine powertrain maintenance.

Zero will also host a 10th anniversary celebration on September 10. Owners will receive invitations to join Zero staff and notable personalities for motorcycle rides, factory tours, technical seminars, food and entertainment.

“This event may be the first-ever motorcycle gathering where the attendees make more noise than their bikes,” said Walker.

No More Jumpstarting Motorcycles

Weego Jump Starter Battery + Review | No More Jumpstarting Motorcycles

June 29, 2016

When you find your motorcycle with a dead battery, the days of looking for someone to jumpstart your engine are done. Modern technology has put the starting power of a car battery into a package the size of an Apple iPhone 6, though a bit heavier (still under a half-pound) and thicker (just over a half-inch)—the Weego Jump Starter Battery+.

Using the portable battery starter couldn’t be easier. Simply attach the included miniature jumper cables to the battery terminals—we’d like to see something that plugs into a quick-connect harness—and plug them into the Weego. Turn the Weego on, and it is ready to rock.

Designed to jumpstart gasoline motors up to 4.6 liters in displacement, it has no problem with any motorcycle powerplant. We rekindled a Suzuki DR-Z400S with a dead battery multiple times with nary a hesitation from the starter.

As a bonus, the Weego Jump Starter Battery+ also functions as a ashlight and it has a USB output port for charging phones and tablets. This is an essential product for the touring rider.

We tested the standard ($109.99), but Weego also offers a Heavy Duty ($149.99) for engines under 6.4 liters, and the Professional ($199.99) for engines under 9.6 liters. For additional information, visit Weego.
