My Nitro sounds like a diesel

I was coming home from work today. Stuck in traffic and some guy in next lane starting talking to me. He asks me if that is a diesel engine. I said no. He started to laugh and said man it sure sounds like a diesel. Sounds loud. Well I have the 3.7L Slt. So when I got home I got out of the car and listened and you know what it does sound like a diesel. I mean its not that loud, but weird.
The idle is somewhat smooth for a truck. I was thinking maybe its the gas, I put regular and was thinking of putting a higher grade. Has anybodyelse experience this? Should I be concern? or does dodge make there engine to make it sounds like a real truck. I also notice at times the brakes are grabby. I only have 550 miles on it.

Basically I just want to know if your nitro engine quiet?
My wife has one of the first R/T's .......4.0L.........Diesel is an understatment.....Dodges answer is yes we know, but don't know what it is or what to do about it........So live with it......! We got this R/T the first week in Jan............From day one it sounded like this........and it keeps getting worse.......And now at low speeds it knocks intermintely Every one that rides with us wants to know what wrong with this Nitro......We traded a pertfect 2005 Magnum R/T ....The Hemi was strong ....quiet......quick........It rode and handled like a dream........And what we got was a pretty face and what was under that pretty face was a heart of junk!!!!!!!People here in Fl. stop me every where I go and want to know about our Nitro..........It's so sharp looking and all........Many have been thinking about getting one .....So when asked how I like it......I TELL THEM!!!!!!!!!And ask them if they'd like to take a ride and I'll show them!!!!!!! And finally......Dodge doesen't seem to be in any hurry to take care of it.......Oh and buy the way......I do know from whince I speak......As I have over 50 years of experience .....building and racing cars... and did it for a living for years......So don't come here trying to blow smoke up my skirt about whats wrong with this peice of junk......as some on here have tried to do......If some of these young pup's on here knew as much as they think they do.....They'd be dangerious.........My $1.249's worth.....Wolfie.......BTW this is may wifes SUV........I have a new much modified Chevy SSR......and a T/A WS-6

Man Wolfie you must have a huge Hat.

As for the first poster. I have the 3.7 and have not noticed it being overly loud.
When idling it seems fine. Noticeable but I rather like it and I like the way it sounds when I rev it up. I have yet to have any problems with my Nitro so far with 6750Km. Not bragging just letting you know that there are Nitro's out there
with out the problems some people are having. Don't forget that a person having a problem is 10 times more likely to put a post up on a forum then someone that is not having problems.

Enjoy the ride, I know I do

Polarbear:)
I have a 3.7L also not enough noise to bother me or anyone riding with me. I would take it back to dealer again & demand they fix it or replace it. You don't have to just live with it ,they may but you don't.
Trolls...... I've seen & heard 3.7s & 4.0s & they hardly sound like diesels. These guys are just baitin us into a frenzy. It's all bull.

The BULL is in your comment.....! How can you make this comment when you havn't hear our 4.0.........With only 1320 mile on the od....I took it in to the dearlership in Avon Parl, Fl....An old and respected dealership here in south central Fl...........I wanted a early service and have them check out sounds we were hearing........ They test drove the R/T and I drove it with them......They agreed with me , saying something wasn't right ........They finished the service......the service mgr. call the factory......the answer back was ....."Yes they knew about the sounds.......like a worn out V6.......with other rattles, internally .....their comment was, at that point, they didn't know what it was.....therefore, they didn't know what to do about it.....I'd just have to live with it.......The R/T now has 3010 miles on it ......sounds now are more sever........and it goes in next week for another service and and a thorough going over.......Oh and BTW ....anytime you want to come by and give it a listen.......Your more than welcome.......BUt don't go makeing comments about things you know nothing about.......My comments have not been made to infer that all Nito's .....either 3.7 or 4.0 will sound like this.......But there is something wrong!!!!!!!!! And others have these problems............Just be carful........Wolfie

i have a 2001 dodge cummins 3/4 truck! and my wife's nitro sounds nothing like it. white wolf you are out of line on your reply because you have not heard our nitros. yes you built and raced cars for 50 years and we all know how quite those are!!!!!!!!
Out of line.....I don't thinks..........The service mgr. and the tech's at the dealership agree that noise is there......The factory agrees there is a problem as they have had reports of these problems.......The Dodge people don't think I'm out of line........Their concerned........ But I guess you know more than they do..........
Well then, I stand corrected. Wolfie knows more than me. Hope you get your problem fixed.
BTW, I pulled up to one of the newer Dodge Diesels today. If your Nitro sounds like that, I can't believe you even took delivery of the car. I'd be afraid to drive it if it was that bad.
Of the 5 or 6 Nitros I've driven & been around, including both 3.7s & 4.0s, none of them sounded even close to that. Mine has over 4000 miles on it with no sounds even close.
Whitewolf, I know exactly what sound you are referring to because my R/T is doing the exact same thing. Try this, have you wife leave the R/T in drive with her foot on the brake, and with the engine running lean on one of the valve covers and see if the sound goes away. Mine does, seem like a motor mount or something that has gotten a little to close to the vibrating engine.
Whoa whoa Calm down guys. Some of the nitros that came out early did have problems. Its a new line not everything is perfect on it. If his Nitro sounds like a diesel its possible it could have just been a bad portioin of the assembly line. Just because some nitros sound like diesels doesnt mean they all do. So just relax Dodge will fix the problem they just need a little time. As you were told they are aware of the problem. Just let them figure it out. I might take them a little time but im sure there will be a recall on the ones that have problems. Its nothing to argue about.
I've had my R/T for a week now (yes I waited for MyGig, and totally worth it) and I don't think it's loud enough. You listen to the commercial when the gentlemen "jump" starts the car and that nitro sounds great. Mine sounds like a car.
The best thing is that my wife is the one who picked it over both the Lincoln MKX and the Infinity FX35. Both of those sound like cars and are supposed to but the Nitro?
This thing needs a cat-back or something, sounds WAY too tame.
I don't think you gentlemen get it!.......I'm not talking about the exaust!.....It's the knocking and rattle thats in the ENGINE!........The sound of the exaust has nothing to do with it! Although a nice throaty sounding exaust would help........maybe even coverup the rattle and knocking.......And there are a fewmore things wrong with my R/T........Transmission........Air bags screwed up.......U-jouint noise.......and most exciting of all Is the surging it does when you drop it in gear.....either reverse or forward ......I've had to lock up the brakes more than once to keep from hitting something or someone.......My R/T was built 12-14-06.........And I knew better than to buy a new production model straight outa the shute.....But too soon old ....too late smart.....I've done it before and .....no trouble.....but not this time. One last comment.......I in no way am saying that all Nitro R/T's will have the problems I'm having.......just want you to know that things are happening and to be careful........And from the E'mails I'm getting......I'm not alone on the engine rattle -knocking situation....They don't say anything in here for fear of the bad mouthing they will get from the socalled know-it-all's........Dodge is working on this.......I hope they get a a handle on it.......I have a date with the Dodge Customer Service Rep.........we will see what we will see.....Wolfie BTW... IF you want to hear a real sweet sound ....you should hear the Magnaflow....X pipe ...true duals .....on my 6.L SSR ....Now there's some sound for ya.....and it is quick!....And it gets much better gas mileage than the R/T.........WW

I have to agree...but when I bought it, it wasn't so noisey.

Not only does it rattle ...it will stall out just driving down the road.

I'm keeping it for a few more months and then going to dump it off on the next sucker.

Looks good...but a big hunk of junk:mad:
3.7 engine noise

my 2007 with 3000ks is on the noisy sid most notable when you ar out of the car, sonds lik valve lash. my bigest complaint is the head lites, poor toterible

This comments I made back in April was and is fact......The fact that it takes you 5 months to make you intelligent reply shows only one thing......Your rather SLOW. and like several others on this forum I am waiting a bit to unload this piece of junk on another dealer..........It's a pretty face but no substance. wolfie:) --------BTW this is what I drive.

Mine sounds funny also...

I woudn't call it a diesel sound but deffinetly doesn't sound like a NEW unleaded motor should. Mine sounds like it has an exhaust leak... but I can see where it would bear sound resemblence of a really quiet diesel. My uncle works as a mechanical dept manager at a local respectable body shop... His top mechanic is a mopar nut and he told me the 3.7/4.0 motors are junk anyway. Which I don't keep cars very long so I plan on trading before the warranty goes out. Hopefully I can enjoy it and not have it break done on me until then.:D
-whitewolf- Keep taking it back to dodge until they do something about it... To the point of annoying them and keep it up. I had a buddy that did this and they paid off his truck!
