August 16, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Ram Truck today announced pricing for the 2020 Ram 1500 powered by the new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $******36,890 for the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD, plus $1,695 destination.

The EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option, or $3,000 premium over the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 eTorque ($3,300 on Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Rebel and Laramie base models).

“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel offers the best torque and towing among all half-ton diesel trucks,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “Now with a 10-year track record, the Ram brand has emerged as a truck powertrain technology leader. Overall, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has outstanding pick-up truck capability and is truly in a class of its own.”

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available across all models and configurations, including a first-time offering in the Ram Rebel.

The Ram 1500’s all-new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel leads the half-ton pickup truck segment in torque with 480 lb.-ft. and diesel towing capability of 12,560 pounds.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is also offered with the second-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. Pricing for the Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel (Crew Cab 4x2) starts at $39,140, plus destination.

Fuel economy ratings will be announced closer to when trucks go on sale early in the fourth quarter of this year.

All-new EcoDiesel engine

The third generation of the turbocharged EcoDiesel V-6 delivers increased torque and horsepower, along with superb fuel economy and minimal levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to meet the needs of Ram 1500 owners.

In the 2020 Ram 1500, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is rated at a best-in-class 480 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm, a 14 percent increase from the previous-generation EcoDiesel V-6, which peaks 400 rpm earlier. Horsepower increases 8 percent to 260 hp at 3,600 rpm.

Several significant changes contribute to the new EcoDiesel’s improved dynamic and fuel economy performance.

A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry is more efficient and provides improved response as engine rpms rise and fall
Redesigned intake ports to improve engine performance and fuel economy
Introduction of a dual, high-pressure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, a first for a diesel engine in North America. The EcoDiesel’s existing high-pressure EGR, with cooling exhaust gases drawn from the exhaust manifold, is augmented with a low-pressure EGR system that draws exhaust gases after they exit the diesel particulate filter. The addition of cooler, low-pressure exhaust gas makes a significant contribution to improved fuel economy and lower oxides of nitrogen (NOx)
The compression ratio is changed to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1, which helps reduce exhaust emissions, particularly NOx
Redesigned high-pressure (29,000 psi/2,000 bar) direct-injection fuel injector nozzles
Combustion chamber geometry optimized to improve fuel economy
Redesigned aluminum-alloy pistons improve fuel economy. The redesigned pistons use thinner piston rings and coating on the side skits to reduce friction
The piston pin is offset 0.3 degrees from the centerline to reduce “piston slap” against the cylinder wall, minimizing NVH
The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a sandwiched polymer/metal material to reduce NVH
The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is 50 percent larger and incorporates a new-generation diesel oxidation catalyst with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system to reduce NOx
New-generation brake system vacuum pump with low-friction blades contributes to improved fuel economy

The upgrades build on the EcoDiesel V-6’s attributes and performance that made it a winner of Wards 10 Best Engines award for three consecutive years.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 uses dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks. The block is cast with compacted graphite iron, which provides strength to dampen vibrations, but weighs less than grey cast iron. A compacted graphite iron bedplate adds rigidity to the block.

The EcoDiesel V-6 uses a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods for strength and durability. The aluminum alloy pistons are cooled on the underside via oil jets. Heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads use individual bearing caps to reduce friction and minimize NVH. The chain-driven overhead camshafts employ roller-finger followers.

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is produced at the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy.

Diesel power is back at Ram!

Yes, I know, technically it never disappeared. The mighty Cummins straight-six is still a mainstay of the brand’s heavy-duty pickups, as it has been for decades. But pedantic caveats aside, if you’ve lusted after the impressive fuel efficiency and stump-pulling torque delivered by compression ignition, you’ll soon be able to get a V6 EcoDiesel in the latest-generation Ram 1500, the company’s increasingly popular half-ton model.

Boasting numerous improvements over its predecessor, this engine provides an extra helping of both horsepower and torque, is smoother, quieter, and should be more economical to operate. Extensive changes to internal and external components deliver these laudable enhancements, which conspire to make it an even more appealing choice.

For this review, the powerplant in question was bolted between the front fenders of a crew cab Laramie Longhorn 4×4. This is basically the second-fanciest model in the Ram 1500 range. Despite the abundance of features, interior space and, ostensibly, weight, this rig still performed admirably in normal driving and even while towing.

The Inner Workings

But before diving into how this truck runs, let’s take a peek under the hood. Numerous refinements have been made to FCA’s EcoDiesel V6 for 2020. Even though this powerplant is now in its third generation, many fundamentals remain the same.

Starting with a few similarities, it’s a 3.0-liter V6, just like before. Chain-driven dual overhead camshafts operate four valves per cylinder via friction-reducing roller-finger followers. Once again, the block is cast of compacted graphite iron for incredible strength and reduced NVH, that’s noise, vibration and harshness. Within this foundation spins a forged crankshaft to which are attached forged connecting rods.

Filling this engine’s half-a-dozen bores are completely redesigned aluminum pistons. They’re fitted with thinner rings for decreased friction. The wrist pins have also been offset three-tenths of a millimeter from centerline to further cut noise. Special coatings on both the piston skirts and pins further reduce parasitic losses.

Forcing air into this bent-six is a new water-cooled, variable-geometry-turbine turbocharger, which is mounted at the back of the engine, kind of above the bellhousing area. This newly designed blower should enhance both efficiency and responsiveness.

Reworked intake ports promote more swirl in the combustion chambers and flow more air to boot. Improving efficiency, the compression ratio has been increased modestly, from 16-to-1 to 16.5-to-1. As for fuel delivery, the system has also been upgraded. It operates at 2,000 bar, that’s 29,000 PSI.

But what’s the result of all these changes? Well, the EcoDiesel now gives you the most torque in the half-ton diesel segment, up to 480 pound-feet at 1,600 RPM, more than F-150 or Silverado and an increase of 14 percent compared to its predecessor. Horsepower measures 260 at 3,600 revs, 8 percent more than before, a total that’s slightly less than the Chevy’s best. Here’s a quick specs-sheet showdown comparing the Detroit Three’s light-duty diesel pickups.

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

260 horsepower, 480 pound-feet

Ford F-150 Power Stroke Diesel

250 horsepower, 440 pound-feet

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Duramax Diesel

277 horsepower, 460 pound-feet

The Drive

Matching its best-in-class torque is segment-leading capability. Properly equipped EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500s can tow up to 12,560 pounds. As for hauling, the truck’s maximum payload rating is 2,040 pounds.

Ram has made a name for itself in recent years by offering the best interiors in the truck business. Whether you get an entry-level Tradesman model or swing for the fences and grab a range-topping Limited version, each step up the trim ladder comes with a nicer cabin than what’s available in comparable rigs built by rival automakers. Given the elegance of today’s Ram trucks, a bone-shaking, oil-burning engine simply wouldn’t cut it.

Fortunately, the EcoDiesel is a paragon of refinement. Long gone are the days when diesel engines discharged enormous plumes of tar-black smoke and clattered like a can of gravel in a paint mixer. This V6 operates in near silence and produces scarcely any vibration.

Given its perfect internal balance, the Duramax inline-six offered in Chevrolet’s Silverado 1500 is a tiny bit smoother than the EcoDiesel. Ram’s engine emits an infinitesimal wisp of buzziness that can be felt in the floor at certain engine speeds, but still, this is nearly immaterial. This engine is so smooth most drivers would probably have no idea it’s a diesel unless you told them, or, of course, they read the badges on the outside.

As for performance, like most diesels this one takes a second or two to catch its breath when you nail the accelerator from a standstill. But once you get about 2,500 revs on the clock the truck pulls smartly, winding out to about 4,300 rpm before the transmission grabs the next gear. Ram’s reliably competent eight-speed automatic shifts quickly and without drama.

Demonstrating the EcoDiesel’s towing prowess, Ram had a couple of trucks hooked to trailers so we could experience this firsthand. One of them was loaded with a pair of ATVs and weighed a claimed 5,150 pounds.

With more two-and-a-half tons in tow, the EcoDiesel was largely unphased. Acceleration was more than adequate, with the truck putting its shoulder to the load and pulling like a team of oxen, even up moderate grades. Equipped with the optional air suspension system, the pickup proved to be a supremely stable and confidence-inspiring tow rig. Never did it feel like the trailer was trying to drive the truck. The tail never wagged the dog. It was smooth and planted at all times.

Fuel-economy numbers for the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel have not been finalized yet, but I’d imagine the truck will deliver at least 30 miles per gallon on the highway in its most efficient form. I mean, it pretty much has to. The F-150 gives you that, and the newest light-duty Silverado was just rated at a damn-impressive 33 mpg, a figure that will be tough for Ram to beat. But no matter what the official consumption figures end up being, this truck is practically guaranteed to be remarkably economical in real-world use. Without even trying, in my hands the trip computer registered an average of around 28 miles per gallon.

Now that EcoDiesel is joining the lineup, Ram offers a broad selection of engines in its half-ton truck. You can get a base Pentastar V6 fitted with FCA’s innovative eTorque mild-hybrid system, you can opt for a classic 5.7-liter Hemi and you can even get that V8 with eTorque. Of this bunch, I think the Hemi is still my favorite thanks to its rumbling exhaust note, but it’s impossible to argue with the EcoDiesel’s punch and striking efficiency.

What’s it Cost?

So, how much does this fancy compression-ignition engine cost? Well, it ain’t cheap, but neither is it a total budget buster.

The EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option or $3,000 more on trucks fitted with an eTorque-ified Hemi. On Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Rebel, and Laramie base models it’s a $3,300 upcharge. Interestingly, this engine will be offered across the range on every version of the Ram 1500, including the off-road-focused Rebel model, which is a first, and something that will likely be welcomed by enthusiasts.

The most affordable version of this 2020 model-year truck fitted with a diesel V6 is a Tradesman trim, quad-cab, rear-wheel drive example. One of these should set you back about $38,585, including $1,695 in destination fees.

The crew-cab, Longhorn, 4×4 model tested here checked out at an estimated $67,000. But more value-conscious shoppers can pick up a diesel-powered Ram 1500 Classic, the affordably priced previous-generation truck that’s still on sale. They can be had with a gen-2 EcoDiesel V6. They’re not quite as powerful or advanced, but they should still be an excellent buy.

The Verdict: 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

With impressive refinement, efficiency and reasonably affordably pricing, there’s no reason not to buy the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, especially when you consider this truck’s class-leading interior, excellent capability, and near-luxury refinement. Look for diesel-powered 2020 Ram 1500 pickups at dealerships in the fourth quarter of the year.

Ram 1500 First Full-size Pickup to Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick+
  • 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab and certain 2019 Crew Cab models are first full-size pickups to earn Top Safety Pick+ under current Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) guidelines
  • Top Safety Pick+ is highest rating awarded by IIHS
  • Ram 1500 achieves highest possible ratings in each of the six crashworthiness tests conducted by IIHS
  • Crashworthiness aided by FCA’s patented splayed front frame rails
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology graded “superior,” benefiting from industry’s only pickup-segment application of Integrated Radar Camera Module (IRCM) – one of more than 100 available safety and security features

September 10, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Ram 1500 Crew Cab full-size pickup has been named a Top Safety Pick+ for 2019, the highest rating given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The rating applies to 2020 Ram 1500 pickups, and 2019 trucks produced after May of this year, when equipped with adaptive LED projector headlamps that have high-beam assist and Ram’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology, Forward Collision Mitigation.

“This recognition validates our unrelenting efforts to deliver more value for our customers,” says Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “The new Ram 1500 has earned many accolades for its capability and design. It is immensely satisfying to have the IIHS recognize our truck for its compelling safety story.”

The Ram 1500’s safety story begins with innovations such as its patented approach to frame-rail construction. The truck’s front frame-rails are splayed to better manage crash energy in certain types of frontal collisions.

Of the six crashworthiness evaluations conducted by the IIHS, three simulate frontal impacts. And the Ram 1500 recorded “good” results in each, the highest possible rating.

Outcomes were the same in the three remaining crashworthiness tests, which inflict damage consistent with a side impact, rear impact and a rollover.

Also unique to the Ram 1500 is its use of an Integrated Radar Camera Module (IRCM) to accommodate Forward Collision Mitigation. The IRCM consolidates radar and camera components behind the vehicle’s rearview mirror, which not only simplifies their interface, but keeps important technology out of harm’s way in the event of minor collisions.

Meanwhile, Forward Collision Mitigation in the Ram 1500 earned a “superior” rating from IIHS. The optional feature boasts sensor-fusion technology, which blends camera capability with radar detection to determine when an impact is imminent.

The system initially warns the driver to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver does not act in a timely manner, the system may activate the vehicle’s brakes if collision risk remains.

The Top Safety Pick+ rating is also enabled by adaptive LED projector headlamps that have high-beam assist. The technology was refined in May of this year, earning the highest IIHS rating of “good.”

A “good” rating in headlamp testing is the latest IIHS requirement to earn Top Safety Pick+.

The 2019 Top Safety Pick+ rating is the culmination of many months in the spotlight for the Ram 1500 – from Motor Trend Truck of the Year to a place among Wards 10 Best Engines with its standard-equipment 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque.

October 4, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Ram Truck today is celebrating a decade of innovation as a stand-alone brand with a full lineup of no-compromise trucks and commercial vehicles. Since emerging as a stand-alone brand in October 2009, the Ram Truck brand has steadily become a leader in durability, technology, efficiency and convenience with features never before offered in a pickup truck.

"Since becoming a distinct brand 10 years ago, Ram has had the benefit of being able to focus solely on trucks and commercial vehicles, allowing us to build the best vehicles possible for our customers,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “We expect Ram’s momentum to continue, and we feel optimistic that we’re making the right moves, at the right time, to attract buyers.”

Milestones

2009 – Redefining the American Truck

In 2009, Ram Truck introduced a feature that would become a stalwart in the brand’s portfolio: the RamBox cargo management system. RamBox’s side bins create storage along each side of the pickup bed, space previously left untouched because of wheel-well intrusion. RamBox bins fit the length of the pickup bed and incorporate the space over each wheel well to secure cargo within a lit, lockable and drainable container. Lids include swing hinges with intermediate and full-open positions that lift the lid 90 degrees perpendicular to each side.

2010

"New Crew" of Ram Heavy Duty Pickups

The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty trucks provided customers with first-time innovations and features, along with new standards of strength, utility and driveability, building on Ram’s leadership in the heavy-duty pickup segment. The 2010 Ram Heavy Duty trucks were available for the first time as a crew cab model, providing Ram with a formidable entry in the highest volume part of the heavy-duty pickup segment.

Outdoorsman
The Ram 1500 Outdoorsman joined the lineup as a new trim that was designed for outdoor enthusiasts. The Outdoorsman took all of the features most useful to hunters, fishermen, campers and boaters and packaged them into one model. Outdoorsman combined convenience, off-road capability and trailer towing hardware in one package with a name that resonated among its intended users.

2011

Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn – Luxury Redefined

Making its debut at the State Fair of Texas for the 2011 model year, the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn was unveiled as the most luxurious truck ever produced by the Company. The Laramie Longhorn was designed for the owner who needs a truck for work or play, but won’t settle for anything but the finest quality and refinement. Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn owners continue to be greeted by the highest quality materials every time they climb behind the wheel.

Chassis Cab Joins the Lineup
Ram began offering a chassis cab for the 2011 model year and brought best-in-class standard horsepower and torque, brake life, standard gross vehicle weight rating, powertrain warranty and a class-exclusive manual transmission along with it. By working with truck body suppliers, Ram Truck engineers gave the 2011 Ram Chassis Cab an upfitter-friendly design, providing customers with a less expensive, worry-free experience in their choice of work body adaptation to the vehicle.

2012
A new Tradesman Heavy Duty joined the lineup for the 2012 model year and brought with it class-leading towing, payload and gross combined weight rating. The Tradesman, which is aimed at one of the pickup truck segment’s largest traditional customer bases, continues to be a value-priced option package designed to meet the hardworking needs of small-business owners, construction jobsites and commercial fleets.

A new six-speed automatic transmission, available on the 4.7-liter and 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engines, and new steering wheel with cruise control buttons also debuted for 2012.

2013 – Reinventing the Segment, Again
The 2013 Ram 1500 featured new exterior design cues, including an all-new grille and front fascia, improved quad projection headlamps and LED front turn signals and taillamps. Best-in-class fuel economy was achieved with the addition of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine and TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 was also available with the TorqueFlite eight-speed transmission for the first time. Inside, the 2013 Ram 1500’s upgraded interior features included standard and premium multiview display, passive entry, Keyless Enter ’n Go, steering wheel with controls, wood accents, updated door panels, instrument panel, interior colors and premium materials.

Also new for 2013 was the remote central locking RamBox cargo management system and tailgate combined with door locks. Rain-sensing wipers, SmartBeam headlamps, power-folding mirrors and power-sliding rear window with defrost also joined the lineup as available options in 2013.

2014

3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel Engine Introduced

The Ram 1500 was the first modern half-ton, full-size pickup to offer durable, efficient diesel technology. With the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel’s historic debut, Ram customers could enjoy class-leading fuel economy and range, along with torque that was unsurpassed by any full-size truck with a V-6 engine. The EcoDiesel-powered 2014 Ram 1500 earned a 28-mpg rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the best highway-cycle test result ever achieved by a half-ton, full-size pickup. It also exceeded the EPA highway rating for the top-ranked midsize pickup.

This 28-mpg rating opened the flood gates when dealers opened for orders – more than 8,000 trucks equipped with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine were sold in the first 72 hours of availability. Initial demand was strong as demonstrated by the amount of orders already paid for by customers — twice the corporate average of sold customer orders on a truck that had yet to be test driven at the time.

Ram Commercial is Formed
In 2014, Ram Truck launched a new division to focus on commercial truck development, sales and support in a growing market. Embodied by the Tradesman trim level available on all models, the Ram Commercial organization continues to offer a full line of industrial-strength trucks and vans.

The timing of Ram Commercial’s launch aligned with the 2014 model year launch of the all-new Ram ProMaster van and a positive commercial demand.

Ram Commercial targets countless businesses in a variety of industries, including service and repairs, construction, transportation and shipping, large-medium-small businesses and agriculture. ProMaster has also become a popular option for the Van Life movement.

Ram ProMaster – A One-Stop Mobile Shop
The 2014 Ram ProMaster joined the lineup as the brand’s latest addition to its popular commercial lineup and put Ram Truck back into the expanding, purpose-built, full-size van segment with a number of best-in-class features focused on the commercial customer. The unique van created additional opportunity in Ram’s work truck lineup. ProMaster continues to prove that it’s a workhorse with an incredible combination of durability, value, efficiency and capability like none other in its class. Additionally, the ProMaster was the first offering in its competitive set to provide both a chassis cab and cutaway from the factory.

2015

Ram 1500 Rebel – For Those Who Push Back

The 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel kicked in the door, for both the brand and segment, with the introduction of a one-of-a-kind design that brought robust off-road capability, enabling the brand to reach even more consumers. The 1500 Rebel ushered in a new “cross-hair” grille design, black off-road front bumper with a durable powder-coated surface that incorporates a Billet silver skid plate, new front tow hooks and new LED fog lamps. The “RAM” stamped tailgate with blacked-out lettering also debuted on 1500 Rebel.

Off-road capability was bolstered by the introduction of Bilstein front and rear shocks with unique tuning and a new steering calibration that is matched to the Rebel’s increased ride height.

2016

Ram Rebel TRX Concept – 100-mph Off-road Pickup

Ram Truck cemented its position as America’s off-road truck leader with the introduction of the 2016 Ram Rebel TRX concept at the State Fair of Texas. The rapidly beating heart of the Ram Rebel TRX concept is a powertrain juggernaut. A 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 with 575 horsepower, the most powerful Ram 1500 the Company has ever built, lays the groundwork of expectation. As part of the Company’s recently unveiled five-year plan, the Ram Rebel TRX concept has been approved for production. More information will be disclosed at a future date.

2017

New Standard Features

For 2017, the 1500 received new standard features, including remote start and security alarm. Other standard features include the Uconnect 8.4 and media hub, automatic dual-zone temperature control, anti-spin differential, premium gauge cluster, rear backup camera and Rear Park Assist.

Ram 1500 Night Edition
Ram introduced a special-edition 1500 Night package that gave truck enthusiasts straight-from-the-factory customized looks. Based on the Sport model, 1500 Night added blacked-out features, including wheels, grille and badging, to pump up the already bold visual presence of the Ram’s monochromatic performance package.

Ram 1500 Hydro Blue Sport
The Ram 1500 Hydro Blue Sport also bowed in 2017 and tied the monochromatic exterior theme together with a body-color front fascia, rear bumper, side mirrors and door handles. Forged, polished 22-inch aluminum wheels were standard on 4x2 models; polished 20-inch wheels were standard on 4x4 models.

2018
A few special-edition trucks joined the lineup for 2018, including the Harvest lineup, 1500 Limited Tungsten, Laramie Longhorn Southfork and Heavy Duty Lone Star Silver editions.

Ram Harvest Edition
The Ram Harvest Edition was the industry’s first agricultural market-specific truck and was visually distinguished by two new colors: Case IH Red and New Holland Blue. Case IH and New Holland farm tractors and other agricultural equipment are manufactured by subsidiaries of CNH Industrial. CNH Industrial N.V. shares a common ancestry with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.

Ram Limited Tungsten Edition
The Limited Tungsten edition, available on both 1500 and 2500, built on the popular Limited trim with an even higher level of sophistication and attention to detail. Notable additions are a truck segment-first Light Greystone suede headliner and ultra-premium “Natura Plus” Frost and Indigo-colored premium leather throughout the cabin, including the seats, instrument panel, steering wheel, center arm rest and doors.

Ram Laramie Longhorn Southfork Edition
The Ram Laramie Longhorn Southfork edition was an opulent offering building upon the well-appointed Longhorn trim with even more luxury, technology and refinement.

Ram Heavy Duty Lone Star Edition
The 2018 Ram Heavy Duty Lone Star Silver edition’s interior was offered with sporty cloth and vinyl high-back bucket seats in Canyon Brown and Light Frost Beige or Black and Diesel Gray. A unique grille-mounted, aluminum Lone Star badge identified the Silver edition as something special.

2019

Ram 1500 – No-compromise Truck, Leading in Durability, Technology and Efficiency

The fifth-generation Ram 1500 burst onto the scene and instantly became the benchmark for durability, technology, efficiency and convenience with features never before offered in a pickup. A host of segment disruptors came along with it, including the new Uconnect 4C with a massive 12-inch touchscreen that leads the pickup world with technology featuring split-screen capability, 360-degree camera views and exclusive content from SiriusXM with 360L. Active safety and security systems joined the technology onslaught with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, Blind-spot Monitoring and ready alert braking.

The upgraded eTorque version of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 debuted for the 2019 model year and continues to be the standard engine in most trim levels, specifically tuned for truck duty and rated at 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. The brawny 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 combines the muscle of 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque – in a smooth, broad power band that avoids the hesitation and peakiness of turbocharged engines – with performance-enhancing and fuel-saving technologies that include variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation.

Multifunction Tailgate – The Industry Leader in Cargo Management and Storage Gets Even Better
Ram Truck continued to strengthen its position as the industry’s cargo management and storage leader with the addition of the multifunction tailgate. The Ram 1500 multifunction tailgate feature is unique among all pickups and offers customers cargo-access flexibility without compromise. Unlike other multi-element tailgates, the Ram multifunction tailgate is trailer-friendly and does not require that the trailer and hitch be removed before opening. With a 2,000-lb. load rating, Ram multifunction tailgate retains all of the traditional tailgate’s capability. In addition to retaining the capabilities of a fully dampened, drop-down tailgate with remote release options, the Ram multifunction tailgate adds a first-of-its-kind 60-40 split, swing-away functionality.

Ram Heavy Duty – The Benchmark for Performance, Capability, Technology and Luxury
The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty is the latest in a long line of Ram trucks that are most comfortable when at work. The most powerful, most capable pickup in the segment with a towing capacity of 35,100 lbs. and a payload capacity of 7,680 lbs., the latest iteration of Ram’s heavy-duty offering brings a never-before-seen torque rating of 1000 lb.-ft. from the Cummins I-6 Turbo Diesel engine. The new Ram Heavy Duty also sets benchmarks in ride and handling, luxury, materials, innovation and technology extending well past any competitive offerings. Giving maximum effort all day, every day with confidence, the new 2019 Ram Heavy Duty line of pickups steps forward with the full force of modern capability.

2020

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel -
America’s Half-ton Diesel Torque Leader
The 2020 Ram 1500 is America’s most powerful half-ton diesel pickup, with 480 lb.-ft. of torque, and most capable light-duty diesel, with towing capability up to 12,560 pounds. The all-new third-generation 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel reinforces Ram Truck’s commitment to powertrain leadership and is expected to lead the segment on fuel economy. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available in all models and configurations, including a first-time offering in the Ram Rebel.

October 7, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Ram Truck today announced EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2020 Ram 1500 powered by the new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine.

Ram’s half-ton EcoDiesel will be rated at 32 miles per gallon (mpg) highway, 22 mpg city for 4x2 models; 29 mpg highway, 21 mpg city for 4x4 models.

Ram 1500’s unsurpassed 29 mpg highway fuel economy rating for 4x4 models is significant in that 4x4 models represent more than 80 percent of the U.S. full-size truck mix.

The Ram 1500’s all-new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel leads the half-ton pickup truck segment in torque with 480 lb.-ft. and diesel towing capability of 12,560 pounds.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel also leads all trucks in fuel range. Paired with an available 33-gallon fuel tank, Ram’s driving range exceeds 1,000 miles.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts at $36,890 for the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD, plus $1,695 destination. The EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option, or $3,000 premium over the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 eTorque ($3,300 on Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Rebel and Laramie base models).

The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Crew Cab is also offered with the second-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. Pricing for the Ram 1500 Classic EcoDiesel (Crew Cab 4x2) starts at $39,140, plus destination.

All-new EcoDiesel engine
The third generation of the turbocharged EcoDiesel V-6 delivers increased torque and horsepower, along with superb fuel economy and minimal levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), to meet the needs of Ram 1500 owners.

In the 2020 Ram 1500, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is rated at a best-in-class 480 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm, a 14 percent increase from the previous-generation EcoDiesel V-6, that peaks 400 rpm earlier. Horsepower increases 8 percent to 260 hp at 3,600 rpm.

Several significant changes contribute to the new EcoDiesel’s improved dynamic and fuel economy performance:
  • A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry is more efficient and provides improved response as engine rpms rise and fall
  • Redesigned intake ports to improve engine performance and fuel economy
  • Introduction of a dual, high-pressure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, a first for a diesel engine in North America.
  • The compression ratio is changed to 16.0:1, from 16.5:1, which helps reduce exhaust emissions, particularly NOx
  • Redesigned high-pressure (29,000 psi/2,000 bar) direct-injection fuel injector nozzles
  • Combustion chamber geometry optimized to improve fuel economy
  • Redesigned aluminum-alloy pistons improve fuel economy. The redesigned pistons use thinner piston rings and coating on the side skits to reduce friction
  • The piston pin is offset 0.3 degrees from the centerline to reduce “piston slap” against the cylinder wall, minimizing NVH
  • The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a sandwiched polymer/metal material to reduce NVH
  • The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is 50 percent larger and incorporates a new-generation diesel oxidation catalyst with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system to reduce NOx
  • New-generation brake system vacuum pump with low-friction blades contributes to improved fuel economy
These upgrades build on the EcoDiesel V-6’s attributes and performance that made it a winner of Wards 10 Best Engines award for three consecutive years.

    • Military-inspired interior features encourage owner customization
    • Ram recognizes owners who serve our nation and serve our communities

November 6, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Ram Truck will honor the five service branches of the United States Armed Forces with a series of “Built to Serve Edition” trucks.

Each of the five U.S. military service branches will be honored by Ram with two specially selected exterior paint colors that evoke the spirit, the mission and history of that service. One of each branch’s “Built to Serve Edition” models will be offered in a new low-volume paint option exclusive to this program.

“Ram wants to honor those who are serving or have served the United States with distinction,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “For Ram truck owners, whether military or civilian, ‘Built to Serve’ is a maxim that they can be proud to stand behind. We also want to bring together Ram owners who are not currently serving to make a difference in their communities. We launched our Ram Nation volunteer organization in 2015 as a way to give our Ram truck owners a way to be involved when there’s a need.”

Ram will roll out the first of the "Built to Serve Edition" trucks in November, coinciding with Veterans Day. A new "Built to Serve Edition" model, representing another one of America's land, air or sea-based military branches, will launch approximately every three months.

The U.S. Armed Forces “Built to Serve Edition” Ram trucks will be offered in the following colors and limited numbers:

Each of the new Ram front ends gets a unique treatment consisting of an all-black grille and surround, black bumpers and black-bezel premium lighting. Complementing the look are black badges, black wheel-to-wheel side steps and dual four-inch black exhaust tips.

As part of the Built to Serve initiative, Ram is bringing further attention to its volunteer initiative called Ram Nation. Ram Nation has been organizing grassroots volunteer events since 2015 and, through the launch of the "Built to Serve Edition" trucks, is reinforcing its commitment to recognizing those who serve our nation and our communities.

Beginning today and launching with a new digital 60-second spot, Ram Nation is recruiting individuals to donate their time and to volunteer in their own communities across the nation, with the cumulative goal of 1.3 million volunteer-hours of service by next Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2020. That goal is equal to one hour for each person serving in our armed services. In addition to activating the Ram Nation volunteer corps across the U.S., Ram is extending the invitation to all individuals, regardless of whether they are a Ram truck owner. To join and learn about new Ram Nation volunteer events, new members can register at www.ramtrucks.com/ram-nation.html.

Ram will kick off the launch of the "Built to Serve Editions," as well as begin the Ram Nation challenge, at the “Stars and Strings” concert, which celebrates our nation’s military heroes and their families at the Fox Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019.

Ram 1500 and Jeep® Gladiator Named to Car and Driver’s 10Best Cars and Trucks List
  • 2020 Ram 1500 wins the Full-Size Pickup category for the second consecutive year
  • 2020 Jeep® Gladiator wins the Mid-Size Pickup category in its debut year
  • Car and Driver evaluates each contender versus its peers using a 100-point scale, basing each score on intended purpose, value, and vehicle operation

November 21, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Car and Driver has named the 2020 Jeep® Gladiator and the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel to its combined “10Best Cars and Trucks” list as the winners in the Mid-Size Pickup category and the Full-Size Pickup truck category, respectively.

Car and Driver evaluates each contender versus its peers using a 100-point scale, basing each score on how well it meets its intended purpose, how good a value it is and how compelling it is to operate.

This is the second year in a row Ram 1500 – the most awarded light-duty truck in America – has been named to Car and Driver’s 10Best.

According to Car and Driver, “The Ram isn’t just the best truck out there; it’s one of the best vehicles. Its supple ride, rich interior and fluid power delivery elevate it to a place we never thought possible for a pickup.”

The all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator – the most capable midsize truck ever – earned a spot on Car and Driver’s 10Best list in its first attempt.

According to Car and Driver, “Every once in a while, a vehicle comes along that forces us to revisit our priorities and question ourselves. The Jeep Gladiator did that this year. It is the vehicle for having fun outdoors.”

Augmenting the Car and Driver 10Best Cars franchise, which for the past 38 years has recognized the 10 best cars on the market in each January issue, the combined 10Best Cars and Trucks award list in the February issue is organized around 10 segments. The list, based on extensive testing, recognizes one honoree from each category: subcompact SUV, subcompact luxury SUV, compact SUV, compact luxury SUV, mid-size SUV, mid-size luxury SUV, large SUV, mid-size pickup, full-size pickup and van.

Any vehicle with a base price higher than $90,000 is excluded from consideration, based on the editors’ belief that an oversize price should guarantee excellence.

November 21, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Green Car Journal has named the Ram 1500 as its 2020 Green Truck of the Year™. The announcement was made today at the 51st annual San Antonio Auto & Truck Show in San Antonio, Texas.

Green Car Journal editors consider all potential truck models in the U.S. market, weighing environmental attributes alongside traditional criteria that define what makes a great pickup, such as capability, versatility, safety, value and style. The winner was selected from five finalists by a Green Truck of the Year jury, comprised of automotive experts and Green Car Journal staff.

"The Ram 1500 stands out in the pickup field, not only with its exclusive use of eTorque mild-hybrid technology, but also with a more powerful EcoDiesel engine that’s EPA rated up to 32 highway mpg," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Review

Dec 06, 2019

The ride back was to be a laborious and deflating one. And had I not been in the new 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn, I think I would have had less time to ponder over the dismal 10 days we had in the bush.

Regardless of your stance on it, there’s no denying that hunting is… difficult. It requires a lot of patience, stamina, and physical strength. And then there’s the suffering of lying in wait for the prey which honestly is what makes the activity so rewarding.

So you can imagine the disappointment at the end of a 10-day trip when you leave the thicket with nothing but a deflated ego and a 12-hour drive home. At least the drive back was in comfort.

FAST FACTS

Engine: 5.7L V8

Output: 395 hp, 540 lb-ft

Transmission: Eight-speed automatic

U.S. Fuel Economy (mpg): 17 city, 22 highway

CAN Fuel Economy (L/100km): 13.8 city, 10.6 highway

US Price: $ 53,385

King-Size Cabin

The interior of this truck is easily one of the most luxurious in the segment. It may seem a bit kitschy if you’re not into the whole western theme, but the quality and attention to detail is undeniable.

The real wood accents are gorgeous with a grain I have not seen before, and the burned-in Laramie Longhorn stamp on the glove compartment and stamped metal inlay on the center armrest are a really nice touch. The leather is soft to the touch, and smells even better.

With eight-way power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats, it’s easy to find the perfect driving position, and impossible to be uncomfortable. It made what would otherwise be an excruciatingly long road trip, a breeze.

Heated and Ventilated Rear Seats… PARDON?

Yes, you read that right; the rear seats are not only heated, but ventilated as well. Ventilated seats are the greatest invention of all time—better than heated seats—and to have that in the rear seat now is truly next level.

I did not sit in the back seat myself, but my two rear-seat passengers had no complaints. With one being a Sasquatch of a man at 6’4”, I thought he’d have a tough time back there on the 12-hour trip, but he said leg and headroom were plentiful, and the seats were comfortable.

Oh, and did I mention they’re ventilated?!
Butch Style

Style is subjective, but the Ram was always an imposing machine to behold and I’m glad to report that nothing has changed. I personally prefer its design to the other trucks out there. Despite the liberal usage of chrome, it looks quite appealing—especially thanks to the plethora of stamped logos all around the truck.
The Tech-Savvy Giant

Chrysler’s Uconnect system is one of the better infotainment systems on the market, especially when it comes to trucks. And paired with this 12.0-inch screen it jumps the ranks even higher. When using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, it splits the screen so you can still the rest of the system. With all of the most important icons laid out at the bottom of the screen, it’s easy to access the controls you need.

Two USB connections in the front and two more in the rear make it ideal for a long road trip. No fighting ensues over who needs to charge their phone the most! It was especially handy to charge our GPS beacons every night, so we didn’t get lost in the bush.

The automatic power running boards are a fantastic feature. There were plenty of situations on the back trails around our hunt camp where permanent running boards would have scraped the ground constantly but with the running boards retracted, it was a non-issue. The speed at which they lower when you open the door is incredible as well. It’s faster than you can step down and get out. I will say though, that one was hanging a bit lower than it’s supposed to, and it makes me wonder about the longevity of them… and it’s just one more thing to break.

The remote tailgate release was fine, but it lacks the power-closing feature that trucks like the Silverado have. Opening it is the easy part… closing is where you want the power.
Suspension

The auto-leveling air suspension is a cool feature, and it impresses your buddies at the hunt camp… but it’s incredibly expensive ($1,795), and I’m not sure it’s worth the money. It’s nice to be able to raise the truck a little when you’re off-roading, but this truck with its low-profile tires and swanky rims isn’t built for off-roading anyway. You can also set it to lower when you park the car so it’s easier to get in and out, and it auto levels on the highway to give you a better fuel economy… but that’s certainly not going to save you enough money to afford this feature.
Storage/RamBox
We only had the 5’7” box, and I was worried at one point we would not be able to fit everything. I personally believe that you might as well skip the RamBox option and go for the extra room on the bed. But if you absolutely have to get one, go for the 6’4” box option as that makes more sense. In this instance, I was happy with the RamBox as it did help us keep our primary hunting equipment dry.

Since only three of us were traveling, we had to make the best use of the 60:40 split rear seats. The Ram also comes with little storage units under the mat for things you want to stow away from prying eyes.
Hemispherical Power

The 5.7-liter V8 Hemi is an incredible engine. It’s smooth and quiet when you want, yet mean and powerful when you need it to be. With 395 horsepower, and 540 lb-ft of torque (which includes 130 lb-ft from the eTorque system), the power is very linear and it has a satisfying growl when you really hammer it.

Another great feature of that eTorque technology is the seamless transition when using the auto start/stop feature. With most systems, there is a noticeable delay between when you take your foot off the brake and when the engine starts up again before you can hit the gas, but this system makes it so seamless, you can’t even tell it’s functioning.

The real-world fuel economy on the highway without a trailer was a little less than advertised at 18 mpg by the end of the 750-mile trip, but we had the truck loaded top to bottom with gear and three people so it’s about what you’d expect. On the way back with the fully loaded trailer it dropped significantly to 9 mpg.

Hunting Moose, Not Gears
The 8-speed transmission is surprisingly smooth and didn’t hunt for gears as much as I was expecting, considering the ridiculous amount of gears it needs to go through. In fact, it’s barely noticeable at all when switching gears. It’s incredibly smooth, but quick. Even when hauling a trailer, it always put itself in the right gear without shuffling to maintain the right RPM.

With the exception of the fuel tank rapidly draining (along with my bank account), while cruising on the highway, you almost forget there’s a trailer filled with 10 days worth of supplies, survival equipment, three ATVs, two generators, and enough fuel to cause a noticeable tear in the ozone layer.

It’s smooth, quiet and lane sway is minimal… until you have to brake. Still, the truck does a great job handling all that weight, and the trailer braking (which is customizable) is fantastic.

There was however absolutely no difference when in tow/haul mode while towing our trailer. I spent about 20 minutes testing the truck with that feature on and off and I could not find any discernible difference. No change in gear shifting speeds, no difference in RPM, no change with the gear the truck chose to be in at any given RPM, and no change in fuel economy. It seemed to be stuck in sixth gear while cruising regardless of which mode I was in. This could have had something to do with the fact that we were close to max towing capacity but still disappointing that tow/haul mode didn’t seem to help with anything. Having said that, the truck had no problem finding the right gear and enough power to haul a trailer up and down the steep hills of northern Ontario.

It has a towing capacity of 12,750 lb, and a payload capacity of 2300 lb; more than enough for any recreational use, and still plenty for most job sights.
A Huge Safety Tech Haul

The truck comes with a full suite of safety features including Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, a 360-degree surround-view camera with great quality—especially so in low light—lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.

All systems worked flawlessly except the lane-keep assist which, honestly, was quite infuriating. It doesn’t activate till you’re way over the line, it doesn’t steer you back in, and just yells at you and shakes the steering wheel, to wake you up and drive in a straight line. You cannot rely on it as you can with other systems.

I also have a bit of a gripe with the front view camera. The quality is great and very clear, but you can’t really see the front bumper so it’s hard to tell exactly how close you are to objects in front.

The adaptive cruise control is great though. Even while using a trailer, it did a surprisingly good job, and it’s almost a necessity on a 12-hour road trip.

Verdict: 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Review

Although the hunting trip was unsuccessful in its main purpose, it was not a total loss. The camaraderie, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the crisp clean air, the active sounds and sights of the forest when the animals don’t know you’re there, and the shockingly eerie silence when the forest is still: it all makes for a great experience even if you leave without meat. And of course, having a wonderfully comfortable truck for the trip doesn’t hurt.

I can only hope that next year, we can get back in this Laramie Longhorn, and if we are again unsuccessful, it will at least soothe the cruel bite of defeat.

LOVE IT
  • Cabin Space
  • Interior quality
  • Smooth ride
  • Towing capacity

LEAVE IT
  • Lane-keeping assist is infuriating
  • View from the front camera could've been better

Twice As Nice: 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 With eTorque Repeats As Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems Winner
  • Second consecutive year for 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque in the award-winning Ram 1500 being named to exclusive list
  • Innovative eTorque mild hybrid system features belt-driven motor generator and 48-volt battery pack; delivers six modes of operation, including seamless stop-start operation, brake regeneration and torque smoothing for luxury-quality gear changes
  • eTorque restarts the engine in the blink of an eye – less than half the time of most stop-start systems
  • 10th consecutive year and 20th year overall that FCA is represented on Wards 10 Best Engines list

December 19, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - For the second consecutive year, the fuel-saving 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque in the Ram 1500 pickup has been named to the list of Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems.

The Pentastar V-6 with eTorque electrification, rated at 305 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and paired with the TorqueFlite 850RE eight-speed automatic transmission, is the standard powertrain in the popular Ram 1500.

“The Pentastar V-6 with eTorque is a great example of giving consumers electrified powertrain technology that seamlessly works with their daily lives,” said Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems. “The standard eTorque system delivers better fuel economy without compromising power or capability.”

The eTorque mild-hybrid system replaces the traditional alternator on the engine with a belt-driven motor generator unit that performs several functions. The motor generator unit works with a 48-volt battery pack to enable improved fuel efficiency, drivability, performance and value. Six different modes of operation include quick, seamless stop-start functions and energy recovery with brake regeneration used to support increases in towing capacity and payload.

eTorque delivers nearly unnoticeable engine restarts by sending up to 90 lb.-ft. of supplemental torque to the engine crankshaft during stop-start maneuvers. Torque to the wheels travels within 400 milliseconds, more than twice as fast as many starter-motor-actuated engine stop-start systems.

“There are lots of drivers who dislike stop-start systems because the engine may turn back on with a shudder, or they might think the engine won’t restart at all. But the Ram 1500’s 48-volt eTorque system is so smooth, quiet and consistently reliable that truck owners will appreciate the technology – and the money they can save at the pump,” said Tom Murphy, WardsAuto managing editor.

The 2020 Ram 1500 with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and eTorque is rated at 20 (city)/25 (highway)/22 (combined) miles per gallon (mpg) in rear-wheel drive and 19 (city)/24 (highway)/21 (combined) mpg in four-wheel-drive models by the U.S. EPA. The city mpg rating is an 18 percent improvement and the combined mpg rating a 10 percent improvement from the previous-generation model.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with eTorque is also available in the 2020 Jeep® Wrangler Sahara four-door.

With the engine running, eTorque’s motor generator unit feeds 48-volt current to a 430 watt-hour lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)-graphite battery. The battery pack includes a 3-kilowatt DC-to-DC converter to maintain the battery’s state of charge and convert 48 volts to 12 volts to power the Ram 1500’s accessories and charge its conventional 12-volt lead-acid battery.

In addition to spinning the engine for restarts to help launch the vehicle, eTorque also recaptures energy during deceleration and braking to charge the battery pack. eTorque also enhances the driving experience by adding torque to the crankshaft during gear changes to minimize noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
