Parts shortages idle Wrangler workers in Toledo

A shortage of parts sourced from hurricane-damaged Mexico has temporarily idled Chrysler Group LLC’s Wrangler plant in Toledo.

Union officials at the plant said workers were told not to report to work Thursday because of parts shortages. It was unclear when those issues would be resolved. About 1,300 workers who assemble the iconic Jeep Wrangler plant are impacted.

About 950 workers at Chrysler’s Toledo North Assembly Plant, where the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro are assembled, began a traditional two-week summer shutdown on Monday.

Japanese automaker Nissan this week also idled two of its U.S. plants because of similar shortages of parts coming from northern Mexico, which was damaged by Hurricane Alex and Tropical Storm Bonnie earlier this month.

Ford Motor Co. is also experiencing difficulties in the launch of its new Ford Fiesta because of the storms. The Fiesta is built in Cuautitlan, Mexico.
