Pope Francis Riding in Fiat 500L, Jeep Wrangler on US Tour

Pope Francis has chosen a pair of FCA vehicles for his rides around the U.S.

Sep 23, 2015

Travelling from the airport to the White House, Pope Francis chose to ride in a Fiat 500L, a decision that appears to be a clear statement regarding the Pope’s staunch beliefs of remaining humble by avoiding unnecessary luxury as well as backing up his stance on climate change by riding in a small economical car. Pope Francis is known for choosing to ride in small economy cars, with a Ford Focus serving as his main ride around Vatican City.

His small 500L stood out among the many black armored SUVs that surrounded it, especially considering visiting dignitaries usually ride in black Cadillac limousines. “It is very easy to recognize where the pope is because it is the smallest car in the motorcade,” said Father Federico Lombardi, the pope’s spokesman.

The Pope will also ride around in a modified Jeep Wrangler Popemobile, which surrounds Pope Francis in glass allowing the crowds to see him. In total, six Fiat 500Ls will ferry the Pope around the three cities he is bound to visit, Washington, New York and Philadelphia.

Pope's Philadelphia Fiat goes up for auction

Pope's Philadelphia Fiat goes up for auction

01/20/2016

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is coordinating with the Philadelphia Auto Show to auction off one of the two dark Fiat 500Ls that shuttled Pope Francis around the City of Brotherly Love during his visit in September. The other will go on display at the show, which runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 7.

These are not your ordinary Popemobiles. They caused a stir because they are tiny and seemed to fit right into the message of humility that the Pope wanted to convey during his visit to Washington, New York and Philadelphia. The Fiats were dwarfed by the SUVs in the pontiff's security detail. The 500L is a more bulbous version of the Italian-designed subcompact.

The car will be auctioned Jan. 29 at the annual Philadelphia Auto Show Black Tie Tailgate at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. No estimates of how much it is expected to fetch, although off-site bidding will be allowed. Proceeds from the auction will benefit and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

To ensure authenticity, sponsors of the auction say they were sure to make sure that the vehicle identification numbers of the Fiats provided by the Secret Service match the VINs of the cars going up for auction and display.

“I’m deeply grateful to Fiat Chrysler for its generosity in giving the Archdiocese of Philadelphia the two Fiats used by Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia,” said Archbishop Charles J. Chaput in a statement.

“When we learned that these vehicles would be given to us, we wanted to find some way for the public to see them and answer Pope Francis’ call to love and care for the poor," the archbishop added. "Our partnership with the Philadelphia Auto Show provides us with the wonderful opportunity to share these vehicles with the community while also connecting with a highly engaged audience for the great benefit of society’s most vulnerable and marginalized members.”

‘Pope Francis’ Philly Fiat’

‘Pope Francis’ Philly Fiat’ from historic US visit auctioned for $82,000

Jan 30, 2016

A tiny black Fiat 500L that carried Pope Francis through Philadelphia during his historic first visit to the United States was sold for $82,000 at an auction on Friday, organizers said.

The auction drew more than 19 bidders and lasted just 11 minutes. Participants competed to take home the car, described as “Pope Francis’ Philly Fiat” both remotely and in-person at the Philadelphia Auto Show, church and auction officials said.

The winning bid of $82,000 was put forward by Michael and Kate Chapman of Chapman Auto Stores and the money will benefit the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, church officials said.

The 79-year-old Pontiff chose the Fiat as a symbol of his concern for the environment and desire to put aside some of the rich trappings long associated with his office.

A new Fiat 500L starts at a list price of about $19,000, according to the company’s website.

The Fiat was one of six used during the Argentina-born Pontiff’s visit to Washington, New York and Philadelphia. He also used a white Jeep with open sides known as a “Popemobile” that allowed Francis to kiss babies as he passed.

Thousands of Americans, both followers of the Catholic religion and the curious, packed the streets of the three cities during Francis’ September visit, during which he also addressed the United Nations and met with prisoners and homeless people.
