Three Chrysler workers told the Register Star a stamping press broke down at the plant. Chrysler spokesman Roger Benvenuti would not confirm the report because the company does not “not talk about our supply source, whether it’s internal or external suppliers” but would say it is an “internal parts” problem.
The sudden shutdown is the latest twist to the start of a difficult year. Production was down a week in January because of a dealer backlog of the vehicles made in Belvidere — the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot. And it was down for one full day from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5 because of a dispute with supplier Plastech Engineered Products of Michigan.
