154,000 Chevrolet Cruze Models Recalled

By Rachel Smith
May 05, 2011

The Chevrolet Cruze is a brand-new model for 2011, and this affordable small car is already into its second recall. The first, which followed an incident in which the steering wheel detached from its column, affected just a few models. The Cruze’s latest recall, however, is much larger. According to the New York Times, “General Motors is recalling all of its 2011 Chevrolet Cruze compact sedans to check for a steering problem as well as a condition in which an automatic transmission that appears to be in Park may still be in gear, increasing the chance of a roll-away accident.” The recall covers 154,000 Cruze models.

Reuters adds, “Of those vehicles, more than 120,000 cars with an automatic transmission will also be inspected to ensure the transmission shift linkage was properly installed, GM said.”

“GM says no crashes or injuries have been attributed to either issue and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received no consumer complaints,” says the Associated Press. The recall, however, was spurred by one complaint GM received. The New York Times explains that the owner “turned the steering wheel without the vehicle changing direction. There was no accident.” GM, however, feels this is an isolated incident, but is recalling the vehicles out of precaution.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not issued official recall data for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, but you can contact Chevrolet or NHTSA if you have further questions. Chevrolet can be reached at 1-800-630-2438 through its vehicle owner center at GM Owners Center - GM. Or, you may reach NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 or Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
