Toyota has issued a recall of certain 2004-2011 Sienna minivans due to the spare tire retainer cable breaking from excessive corrosion.

Sienna minivans registered in salt-belt-states are the focus of this campaign. During winter, certain states use salt in various forms to clear roadways of ice and snow. That salt can corrode the flexible steel cable that holds the spare tire to the bottom of Toyota's Sienna minivan, resulting in the tire separating from the vehicle. Should this happen while the vehicle is in motion, the wayward tire could become a road hazard and a result in crash.

The fix

Toyota has not come up with a fix yet. The remedy still is in the development process. In the interim, dealers are inspecting customer's minivans to see if the cable is at risk. If a cable is found to be suspect, Toyota dealers are removing the spare tire and placing it inside the vehicle in the cargo area until the problem is resolved.

Toyota says vehicles involved in the recall include the front-wheel-drive versions of the 2004-2011 Toyota Sienna. The best way to determine eligibility is to call your local dealership service department with your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and have a database check done on your vehicle.
