Recall Alert: 2004 Saab 9-3

Posted: Feb. 23, 2010

Saab has issued a recall order for about 14,000 9-3 sedans from model year 2004, due to a defect which could prevent the front seatbelts from functioning properly in a crash.

In a recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker explains, “Some of these vehicles were produced with front seat belt retractors that, over time, could fail. The belt may not properly retract and in the event of a crash, a seat occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.”

Saab dealers “will replace the driver side retractor free of charge.” Saab will not replace the passenger’s side belt at the same time. Instead, the company says, “A special coverage will be released for the same population to replace the passenger side retractors for 10 years from new vehicle date of sale.” Owners should expect to receive a recall notice in the mail in March, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Saab at 1-800-620-7668.
