Recall Alert: 2010 Lexus HS250h

Posted: Jun 28, 2010

Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 17,000 models of its 2010 Lexus HS250h for issues related to its fuel tank. It will also halt sales on the hybrid midsize sedan until a remedy can be found.

The recall comes after the 2010 HS250h failed a crash test. The NHTSA explains: “When a vehicle is rotated on its longitudinal axis to each successive increment of 90 degrees following an impact crash test conducted under S6.2, fuel spillage shall not exceed the limits of S5.6. Following a rear impact crash test performed under S6.2(B), when the vehicle was rotated, the amount of fuel spillage exceeded the limits of 65.6.”

In other words, excessive fuel leaks from the 2010 HS250h when it is involved in a crash and spins. “We don't need to remind you about the dangers of excessive fuel spillage, but let's just say that the end result can be very, very bad,” writes Autoblog -- after noting that decades ago the Ford Pinto had similar problems.

Jalopnik correctly notes, “This is the second safety issue for the HS250h in the last six months, it was also recalled in February because of inconsistent brake feel under certain conditions.”

Toyota has not yet announced a fix for the problem. However, it has halted sales on the 2010 Lexus HS250h until one can be determined. While owners aren’t being advised to keep their vehicles parked, it would probably be a good idea to bring a fire extinguisher along for the ride.
