Fiat Chrysler recalling 322,000 Dodge cars for air bags

August 1, 2015

Washington — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said Saturday it is recalling 322,000 cars worldwide to prevent unintended side-curtain air bag deployments after recalling about 844,000 trucks last week for the same issue.

The Italian American automaker says the air bags can deploy if vehicles doors are kicked or slammed with excessive force. Fiat Chrysler said it is aware of three potentially related minor injuries and 25 complaints of problems but no crashes. The problem is an overly sensitive front door pressure threshold.

The new recall covers the 2011-2014 Dodge Charger cars including 284,000 in the United States, 13,000 in Canada, 2,500 in Mexico and 22,000 outside North America. Until service is schedule, Fiat Chrysler said owners should use caution and not slam doors shut. The company says the problem is very rare — impacting less than 0.01 percent of the total recall population.

Last week’s recall covered 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups. There were two minor injuries related to those vehicles.

Fiat Chrysler said in May it investigated whether there were problems with the Dodge Challenger and Chrysler 300, but said its probe found those cars have unique air bag calibrations and don’t need safety recalls.

Separately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday it is opening a separate investigation into 2.8 million radios built by Harman Kardon International for possible hacking concerns — after Fiat Chrysler last month recalled 1.4 million of them after a Wired report showed that two hackers could take control of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. “If sufficient similarities exist, the investigation will examine if there is cause for concern that security issues exist in other Harmon Kardon products,” NHTSA said.

NHTSA previously said it was investigating whether Fiat Chrysler’s recall fix worked and if it impacted other vehicles from other manufacturers.

Statement: Occupant Restraint Control Module
August 1, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is conducting a voluntary safety recall to recalibrate control modules on approximately 284,153 U.S.-market sedans to prevent inadvertent side-curtain air-bag and seatbelt pre-tensioner deployment.

FCA US launched an investigation of certain cars following preliminary findings of a similar investigation involving certain trucks. The latter probe determined some trucks may be equipped with modules that have low deployment thresholds, a finding that triggered a recall in July 2015.

The car investigation since revealed inadvertent side-curtain air-bag deployment may occur if the vehicles’ doors are kicked or slammed with excessive force. The Company is aware of three potentially related injuries, all described as minor, but no accidents.

This latest campaign is limited to certain model-year 2011-2014 Dodge Chargers. Their modules have a unique calibration, which is influenced by door design.

Also subject to recall are additional vehicles approximating 13,169 in Canada, 2,484 in Mexico and 22,272 outside the NAFTA region.

Potentially related complaints account for less than 0.01 percent of the total recall population.

Affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service, which will be performed free of charge. In the interim, FCA US advises owners of these vehicles to exercise caution when closing doors

Customers with questions or concerns may call the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.
