Honda Recalls 18,056 Honda Civics

By Rachel Smith

Mar 17, 2011

Earlier this month, Honda recalled 36,656 Civic Hybrids to replace a faulty component on its hybrid control system. Now the automaker is issuing a recall for gasoline-powered Honda Civics from the 2011 model year.

In a press release, Honda states that it “will voluntarily recall 18,056 model-year 2011 Civic vehicles in the U.S. to inspect and possibly replace the fuel pump module inside the gasoline tank. Observation during assembly revealed that the roll-over valve inside certain fuel pump modules may have been damaged during production. If a vehicle is involved in a rollover crash, a cracked roll-over valve may allow fuel leakage from the gasoline tank into the evaporative emissions canister.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adds that fuel leakage could result in a fire.

There have been no reports of accidents of injuries.

Honda will begin the recall on or before April 11, 2011. Affected owners may take their vehicle to a Honda dealer where the fuel pump will be inspected, and if necessary, replaced for free.

In the mean time, you can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009, reach NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Honda safety recall number is R65
