Statement: Occupant Restraint Control Module
July 25, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is conducting a voluntary safety recall to recalibrate control modules on approximately 667,406 U.S.-market trucks to prevent inadvertent side-curtain air-bag and seatbelt pre-tensioner deployment.

Modules in certain pickups may have calibrations with a low deployment threshold. The Company is aware of two potentially related injuries, both described as minor, but no accidents.

FCA US launched an investigation following customer complaints of advertent deployments, accounting for less than 0.005 percent of the population, almost all of which occurred when vehicle doors were slammed with excessive force. Further, engineers discovered the low deployment threshold is in four-door vehicles.

Affected are model-year 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 2500 pickups. Additional vehicles numbering approximately 153,011 in Canada; 8,272 in Mexico and 14,847 outside the NAFTA region, also are included in campaign.

Affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service, which will be performed free of charge. In the interim, FCA US advises that owners of these vehicles exercise caution when closing doors.

Customers with questions or concerns may call the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Fiat Chrysler to Recall More Trucks to Fix Impact Sensors
Jul 25, 2015

Fiat Chrysler said Saturday that it is recalling more than half a million more trucks in the U.S. to fix faulty impact sensors, a day after it announced an even bigger U.S. recall to update vehicles' software in order to safeguard it from hacking.

The faulty sensors could cause seat belt pre-tensioners to activate and air bags to deploy unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash or injury, according to a statement posted on the U.S. Department of Transportation website.

Fiat Chrysler said it is aware of two minor injuries that were potentially related to the fault, but no accidents. The company also said in an e-mailed statement that the problem was mainly affecting four-door vehicles.

The automaker said Friday that it was recalling about 1.4 million cars and trucks in the U.S. after two hackers revealed that they were able to take control of a Jeep Cherokee SUV over the Internet. In that recall, Fiat Chrysler said it would update software to insulate the vehicles from being remotely controlled.

Fiat Chrysler's announcement Saturday affects 2013 to 2015 Ram pickups and affects 667,406 vehicles in the U.S., as well as a further 176,130 vehicles overseas. Chrysler will notify owners and update a control module in the vehicles at no cost.

Fiat Chrysler to Recall Pickup Trucks With Problematic Airbags

07/25/2015

At the insistence of federal regulators, Fiat Chrysler is recalling about 843,000 pickup trucks because slamming the door too hard could set off the airbag meant to provide head protection in a side-impact crash, according to a report by the automaker posted Saturday on the regulator’s website.

The recall includes about 667,000 vehicles in the United States and covers the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 from the 2013-15 model years. In addition to the United States vehicles, about 153,000 are being recalled in Canada, 8,300 in Mexico and 15,000 outside North America, a spokesman for Chrysler, Eric Mayne, said in an email.

The problematic airbag, typically called an “air curtain,” is mounted in the ceiling above the side windows. The side-impact sensors were not properly calibrated, Chrysler said, so slamming the door “with excessive force” could set off the air curtain. Two injuries, described as minor, were noted.

In June, the automaker informed the regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, of the problem, but contended that a recall was not needed, according to the report. Instead, Chrysler wanted to notify owners that a fix was available, but the safety agency disagreed and insisted on a recall that requires every vehicle to be fixed and requires progress reports.
