Recall Alert: Select BMW and Rolls-Royce Models

Oct 01, 2010

It’s not too often that you hear of an automaker doing a voluntary recall, but BMW is doing just that for certain V8 and V12 BMW and Rolls-Royce vehicles. After unyielding media coverage of Toyota’s problems with unintended acceleration, manufacturers are playing it safe.

The Wall Street Journal reports, “In North America, BMW said the voluntary recall affects about 198,000 V8- and V12-powered models from the 5-, 6-, and 7-series.” Cars affected range from 2002 to 2010 model year vehicles.

While the reason for the recall isn’t as serious as unintended acceleration, it’s still something to be wary about. In a BMW-issued release, the company says “a leak may develop in the power braking system, potentially causing a vacuum loss and consequent reduction of power braking assistance.”

Still, drivers shouldn’t panic -- as mechanical braking is still available to stop and slow affected vehicles. BMW asserts, “There has been no report of accidents or injuries.”

Specific models included in the recall are: 2002-2008 BMW 745i/Li, 750i/Li, 760i/Li; 2007-2008 BMW Alpina B7; 2004-2010 BMW 645i, 650i; 2004-2010 BMW 545i, 550i; and 2003-2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom.

According to KickingTires, “In the coming weeks, owners will receive a notification in the mail to have their cars serviced at the dealer.”
