Fix Problems With Airbags, Brakes

Jun 26, 2015

Mitsubishi has issued two recalls affecting a range of Chrysler, Dodge, and Mitsubishi vehicles from model-years 2000 to 2009. The larger of the recalls is meant to fix a potential safety hazard associated with airbags (though not, thankfully, shrapnel), while the other addresses issues with the anti-lock braking system.

RECALL #1: 2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse; 2001-2005 Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Stratus; 2001-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder
UNITS AFFECTED: 459,618

Younger readers might not remember it, but from 2000 to 2005, Chrysler and Mitsubishi were siblings. At the time, Chrysler was technically known as DaimlerChrysler, and the company -- in which Daimler held the controlling shares -- thought that owning an Asian brand would be a great idea.

Sadly, it was not a great idea. Turned down by Nissan and allegedly Honda, DaimlerChrysler went with its Plan C prom date, Mitsubishi. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi had some skeletons hidden away in its closets, including a whole lotta debt and around 64,000 customer complaints that had never seen the light of day. Every party suffered.

The tie-up was dissolved in November 2005, but the fruit of that short-lived marriage lives on in the form of many, many vehicles that still roam U.S. roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the passenger-side sun visor in some of those vehicles may detach if the airbags deploy. Should that happen, the sun visor could become a projectile, posing a safety risk to occupants.

The recall is limited to vehicles built on the following dates:

2001-2005 Chrysler Sebring vehicles manufactured between April 17, 2000 and February 21, 2005
2001-2005 Dodge Stratus vehicles manufactured between April 17, 2000 and February 22, 2005
2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse vehicles manufactured between April 5, 1999 and December 17, 2004
2001-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured between January 19, 2000 and March 18, 2005

For clarity's sake, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will notify Dodge and Chrysler owners about the recall, while Mitsubishi will notify Mitsubishi owners. After receiving recall notices by mail, owners will be able to take their vehicles to a dealership, where a special tether strap will be installed, ensuring that the sun visor stays in place.

If you own one of these vehicles and have questions, Chrysler and Dodge owners can call FCA customer service at 800-853-1403, while Mitsubishi owners can call 888-648-7820. (Mitsubishi has assigned this case a recall number of SR-15-005.) You can also call NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #15V338000.

RECALL #2: 2006-2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 2007-2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder
UNITS AFFECTED: 74,836

This recall stems from a problem with the vehicles' antil-lock braking system, which may suffer from corrosion. If that's the case, one or more ABS valves may seize, which would boost brake pedal travel and increase braking distance, which would, in turn, increase the risk of a collision.

As with the recall above, this one is limited to vehicles built on specific dates:

2006-2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse vehicles manufactured between April 20, 2005 and February 13, 2009
2007-2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured between December 23, 2005 and February 13, 2009

After receiving a recall notice from Mitsubishi, owners can take their vehicles to a Mitsubishi dealership, where the ABS will be inspected and flushed out using high-grade brake fluid. If it appears that the ABS valves may seize, the dealer will replace the ABS. All repairs will be carried out at no charge.

Questions? Contact Mitsubishi customer service at 888-648-7820 and ask about recall SR-15-004, or call NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #15V337000.
