Hybrid Recalled For Stalling

09/12/2014

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for select models of the Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid SUV. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicles could suffer from stall-like conditions, increasing the risk of an accident.

The recall affects models manufactured during specific windows of time:

2005-2008 Ford Escape Hybrids built between October 13, 2003 and June 20, 2008
2006-2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrids built between June 10, 2005 and June 20, 2008

In those vehicles, NHTSA says that "The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating". Should that happen, it could force the vehicle's hybrid powertrain to shut down, which would essentially cause the SUV to stall, boosting the chance for an accident.

The recall affects some 70,209 vehicles registered in the U.S. Neither Ford nor NHTSA has received reports of any accidents or injuries linked to the underlying problem.

Ford will begin notifying owners of the recall around October 27, 2014. Once owners receive a recall notice, they'll be able to take their SUVs to a Ford dealer, who will replace the existing coolant pump with a new, improved brushless pump, free of charge.

If you believe that you own one of the affected vehicles and have further questions, we encourage you to contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 and ask about recall #14S19. Alternately, you can ring NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and inquire about campaign #14V526000.
