Chrysler Ignition Switches Are Investigated

06/18/2014

Concern over the safety of ignition switches in vehicles is spreading beyond General Motors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating about 1.2 million Chrysler minivans and sport utility vehicles over a concern that jostling the ignition key could accidentally turn off the engine and disable the air bags.

The issue appears similar to the defect that has thrown General Motors into turmoil and forced it to recall millions of vehicles for a defect the that automaker has admitted is linked to at least 13 deaths.

The Chrysler action — pertaining to Jeep Commanders and Grand Cherokees; Grand Caravan and Town and Country minivans; and Journey sport utility vehicles — comprises two investigations.

The first covers about 525,000 Jeep Commanders from the 2006 and 2007 model years, and Jeep Grand Cherokees from the 2005 and 2006 model years, according to a report published Wednesday on the agency’s website.

The agency says it has received at least 32 complaints from the Jeep owners say that the driver’s knee hit the ignition key.

“This causes the engine to shut off, affects power steering and brakes and may potentially result in the vehicle’s air bags not deploying during a frontal crash,” the report said.

Some of those complaints were filed with the safety agency at least six years ago.

“This has happened four times now,” wrote one owner in a complaint filed in June 2008. “I was driving my one-year-old son to the babysitter’s house. My knee bumped the key as I was approaching a turn, shutting off the vehicle/power steering. So, I kept going straight and nearly crashes. Luckily I slammed the brakes and stopped just in time.”

The second action covers about 700,000 Grand Caravan, Town and Country minivans and the Journey sport utility vehicles from the 2008 to 2010 model years, according to a report by the agency also posted Wednesday.

This investigation relates to a 2011 Chrysler recall of about 248,000 2010 Grand Caravans, Town and Country minivans and Journeys for an ignition-key problem that could also result in the engine’s being inadvertently turned off. That action also included about 12,000 Volkswagen Routan models from 2010 that were built by Chrysler.

But the safety regulators say they have received 23 complaints about ignition-key problems from owners of 2008 — 10 versions of those models that were not recalled and a few who said they have the recall fix and the problem occurred again. So, it is investigating whether the automaker should be required to expand the recall.

Chrysler could not immediately be reached for comment.

VW recalling 18,500 minivans for ignition problems

Washington — Volkswagen AG is recalling 18,500 2009 Routan minivans because the ignition key can move to the “off” or “accessory” position under rough road conditions, causing the vehicle to potentially stall and the airbags to fail in the event of the crash.

VW is the latest automaker to recall vehicles for ignition problems since General Motors Co. has recalled more than 17 million vehicles this year worldwide for ignition problems. Chrysler Group LLC — a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV — built the Routan for VW — largely a rebadged Chrysler Town and Country/Dodge Grand Caravan — and informed VW of the need for the recall.

VW will modify the ignition switch and begin the recall this month.

In late June, Chrysler said it would recall nearly 696,000 minivans and SUVs worldwide under government pressure because ignition keys could rotate out of the "on" position, potentially causing stalling and the air bag not to deploy in a front-end crash. Chrysler said it was expand a 2011 recall — that also covered some Routan vehicles — to cover the 2009 Dodge Journey and 2008-09 Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country "for inadvertent ignition key rotation from the run position to the accessory position."

VW has now recalled about 31,000 vehicles since 2011 for the issue.

Chrysler said it was fixing the vehicles by installing a more robust ignition module detent ring.

Chrysler said it had about 30 customer complaints and 465 warranty claims alleging inadvertent engine shut-off while driving — and reports of two rear-end collisions arising from the condition. There are no reports of deaths or injuries from air bags failing to deploy in crashes linked to the defect.

Chrysler disclosed that on June 17, NHTSA asked the automaker in a phone call to recall the 2008-09 vehicles. But the automaker is standing by its recall remedy — adding a detent ring to the switch to make it stiffer, instead of replacing the entire part — even though NHTSA has concerns it may not work.

Chrysler has now recalled about 1.7 million vehicles for ignition switch problems since 2011. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still is investigating whether Chrysler's fix is adequate in most of the recalled vehicles. In July, Chrysler also said was recalling nearly 800,000 older Jeep SUVs for ignition switch problems, and is urging owners to only use the ignition key as the automaker works to find a fix.

The company said the recall covers some 2006-07 Jeep Commander and 2005-07 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, and said its engineers are seeking a remedy. "Chrysler is committing now to conduct a recall out of an abundance of caution," the company said.

Chrysler advised owners to make sure there is enough clearance between their knees and the keys so that the key doesn't get bumped and accidentally turn off the engine. As a further precaution, owners are advised to remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key.

The problem is similar to the issue that has rocked cross-town rival General Motors Co. after it failed to promptly recall 2.6 million cars linked to at least 13 deaths when air bags failed to deploy after vehicles stalled. GM has recalled about 15 million other vehicles for other ignition problems this year.

In an interview in July, acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman said the agency is looking more broadly at the issue of whether other automakers have ignition issues: "This whole GM Cobalt recall brought to light a whole set of new information about interactions between ignition switches and air bags. We quickly jumped on that new information ... We're still in that process."

The Commander and Grand Cherokee have a different ignition switch — an instrument panel mounted switch — compared to column ignition switches in the minivans.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will modify the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1- 800-822-8987. Volkswagens number for this recall is 28G1/U8. Note: This campaign is an expansion of NHTSA Recall No. 11V-151.

2018-2019 Jeep Wrangler JL facing recall over frame weld separations

2018-2019 Jeep Wrangler JL facing recall over frame weld separations

Steering response might diminish or disappear entirely. It's a big deal.

October 5, 2018

When a part is welded to a vehicle's frame, it's reasonably expected that said part will remain welded to that vehicle. But when it doesn't, as is the case with certain Jeep Wranglers, it's time for a recall.

Fiat Chrysler is set to issue a voluntary recall for an unspecified number of 2018-2019 Jeep Wrangler JL SUVs. Since many of these vehicles remain on dealership lots, the automaker has issued a stop-sale for affected vehicles still in dealer possession, according to documents posted to the JL Wrangler Forum. These vehicles cannot be sold or delivered until the recall work is completed. A spokesman for Fiat Chrysler confirmed the forthcoming recall, that the number of affected vehicles is "not big" and that no accidents or injuries have been linked to the problem so far.

The issue stems from a part welded to the vehicle's frame. Evidently, some of the recalled Wranglers might have been constructed with an improper weld connecting the front track bar to the frame, which in certain situations could cause the track bar to separate from the frame. If that happens, the vehicle might suffer from diminished (or no) steering response, which greatly increases the risk of an accident. The track bar, sometimes referred to as the Panhard rod, is a rigid bar that connects the vehicle's axle to its frame, preventing unwanted lateral movement of the axle.

At the moment, it is unclear how Jeep plans to remedy the issue. According to Jalopnik, which contacted several owners who reported track-bar issues, at least one owner is in the process of having his vehicle replaced. Whether Fiat Chrysler will attempt to repair some of the affected vehicles, or replace them all entirely, has yet to be confirmed. There's precedence for outright replacement -- after recalling 293 examples of its Ascent SUV for missing B-pillar welds, Subaru offered full replacements for all affected vehicles.

Affected owners will receive notifications via first-class mail. At least some dealerships have already received FCA's recall notice, according to Jalopnik, which was posted to the JL Wrangler Forum earlier on Friday. That notice says that the recall should begin in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Statement: Air-bag Inflators

Statement: Air-bag Inflators
January 10, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 1.4 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace passenger-side air-bag inflators that may, on deployment, send shrapnel into the vehicle cabin.

The Company is unaware of any injuries or accidents associated this vehicle population.

The defect is linked to temperature cycling, humidity and time. This recall is the fourth and final phase of a coordinated schedule established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and developed to capture defective air-bag inflators produced by the former Takata.

To date, FCA US has replaced more than 4 million Takata inflators. However, the Company’s inventory of replacement parts has outpaced demand for service.

“We strongly urge our customers to respond to their recall notices by contacting an authorized Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealer,” said Mark Chernoby, FCA’s Head of North American Safety and Regulatory Compliance. “Recall service is free, we have replacement parts and dealers are ready to help.”

Fiat Chrysler recalls pickups; power steering can fail
Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 182,000 pickup trucks worldwide to fix an electrical problem that can knock out the power steering

01/25/2019

Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 182,000 pickup trucks worldwide to fix an electrical problem that can knock out the power steering.

The recall covers Ram 1500 pickups from the 2019 model year. Most are in the U.S. and Canada, and one-third are still on dealer lots.

The company said Friday a fastener that grounds the battery wasn't secured properly in manufacturing. The connection can become loose, which disables the power steering. Drivers can still steer but the effort it takes wouldn't be consistent.

FCA says it has no reports of crashes or injuries.

Dealers will secure the fastener at no cost to owners. Fiat Chrysler says it doesn't have a date for the recall to begin, but it under U.S. law it has to start within 60 days.

Statement: Ground fasteners
January 25, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 159,740 U.S.-market vehicles, nearly one-third of which are still in dealer hands, to tighten a fastener linked to reports of power-steering loss.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

An FCA US investigation discovered certain vehicles produced before Oct. 25, 2018, may have a battery ground-circuit fastener that was not secured properly. Accordingly, the connection may become loose enough to intermittently create an open circuit.

Should such a condition occur, the vehicle would retain steering capability. However, it could lead to inconsistent steering feedback, which may contribute to oversteer or understeer, increasing the risk of crash.

Affected are certain 2019 Ram 1500 pickups. Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 18,682), Mexico (est. 407) and a few markets outside the NAFTA region (est. 3.409).

February 5, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 573,876 heavy-duty trucks in the U.S. to address a potential steering-linkage issue.

An FCA US investigation discovered a specific steering-linkage configuration on certain vehicles may separate over time. If this were to occur, the driver may experience steering loss.

The Company is aware of one potentially related injury and eight potentially related accidents.

The recall population is limited to model-year 2013-2017 Ram 3500 pickups and model-year 2014-2017 Ram 2500 pickups and 3500 chassis cabs.

RECALL: Adjustable Pedals

Statement: Adjustable Pedals

February 5, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 193,813 U.S.-market trucks to further secure their brake pedals while the vehicles’ adjustable-pedal feature is in use.

The feature – recommended for use only when the vehicle is stationary – enables a driver to adjust pedal position. It is activated by a switch and powered by an electric motor.

An FCA US investigation has discovered activating the feature to move pedals to their rear-most position may, in vehicles with the defect, compromise integrity of the brake-pedal assembly. If this were to happen, the brake pedal may detach.

FCA US is unaware of any related injuries or accidents, however, the Company urges customers affected by this recall to refrain from using the adjustable-pedal feature until their vehicles are serviced. Further, FCA US reminds customers not to use the adjustable-pedal feature while driving, as stated in their owner’s manuals.

This recall is limited to certain model-year 2019 Ram 1500 pickups equipped with adjustable pedals. More than one-third of these are in dealer hands and will be remedied before delivery to customers.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is unaffected.

All safety recall service is performed free of charge. FCA US urges its customers to heed the instructions on any recall notice they receive.

Customers with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 22,111), Mexico (est. 783) and certain regions outside the North American market (est. 5,487).

Recall Alert: catalytic converter

FCA Recalling Almost 900,000 Vehicles that Don’t Meet Emissions Rules

FCA has issued a recall for hundreds of thousands of Dodge Journey, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Avenger, and Chrysler 200 models for emissions non-compliance.

n a release, FCA repeated the EPA’s statement that the recall “is the result of in-use emissions investigations conducted by EPA and in-use testing conducted by FCA as required by EPA regulations.”

The models affected are the front-drive 2011-2016 Dodge Journey, 2011-2016 Jeep Patriot and Compass (equipped with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission), 2011-2012 Dodge Caliber, and 2011-2014 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger.

In-use testing is one of four checks the EPA uses to keep the industry in line on emissions, with tests “occurring after the vehicles or engines have been certified and after they have been in customer service for some period of time.” These aging FCA vehicles didn’t clear the bar out in the real world, though the EPA says owners can continue driving them until their dealer brings them into compliance.

Of the six models listed, only two remain in production.

“Due to the large number of vehicles involved and the need to supply replacement components – specifically to the vehicle’s catalytic converter – this recall will be implemented in phases during the 2019 calendar year beginning with the oldest vehicles first,” the agency stated.

Under FCA’s recall schedule, 2011 model year vehicles will see shop time in the first quarter of 2019, with vehicles from 2012 getting a fix in the second quarter. Owners of 2013 and 2014 vehicles will have to wait until the third quarter, with the newest vehicles going under the technician’s knife in Q4.

“We are advised that today’s EPA announcement reflects a new policy for announcing routine emissions recalls,” FCA said in a statement. “This campaign has no safety implications. Nor are there any associated fines. This issue was discovered by FCA during routine in-use emissions testing and reported to the agency. We began contacting affected customers last month to advise them of the needed repairs, which will be provided at no charge.”

Fiat Chrysler recall could send palladium price soaring

March 25, 2019

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s recall of 862,520 gasoline-fueled vehicles could spur additional demand for the palladium market that’s already reeling from shortages.

Replacing the catalytic converters in these vehicles would require an additional 77,000 ounces of palladium, said Miguel Perez-Santalla, sales and marketing manager at refiner Heraeus Metals New York LLC. Prices of the metal that’s used to curb greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles have been climbing to records this year as producers struggle to keep up with demand.

“This eventually will be a bit of a supply shock,” said Maxwell Gold, director of investment strategy at Aberdeen Standard Investments, which oversees $736 billion. “Overall, this does paint a very positive picture of just growing emission standards globally, particularly in the U.S. for palladium and gasoline engines.”

Production of the precious metal will trail consumption by 545,000 ounces this year, Citigroup Inc. said in December. Newer and stricter regulations to curb emissions in gasoline vehicles have been forcing automakers to boost their purchases of palladium, fueling the surge in demand even amid a slowdown in car sales in China, Europe and the U.S.

In the of case of Fiat, the new recall was prompted by a so-called in-use investigation by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as well as testing done by the car company that was required by agency rules, the regulator said. The EPA routinely tests vehicles driven by consumers to ensure emissions remain within legal limits over time. Repairs required for Fiat vehicles will include replacing components associated with the vehicles’ catalytic converter, a key part of a vehicle’s emissions-control system, the agency said.

About 70 percent of 110,000 ounces of precious metals needed to replace the catalytic converters will be palladium, Perez-Santalla said. While metal from the recalled cars will likely be recycled, helping ease tight supply, “it’s just going to take a few months for it to come back into the system,” he said.

“EPA will continue to investigate other FCA vehicles which are potentially non-compliant and may become the subject of future recalls,” the regulator said in its statement.

Palladium, which is trading at about $1,550 per ounce, could climb to $1,650 if Fiat is able to quickly replace the catalytic converters, Peter Thomas, senior vice president at Chicago-based metals broker Zaner Group, said in a telephone interview.

“The demand could be impactful on this market, and if nothing else could hold these prices at these levels, which we haven’t had ever before,” Thomas said.
