Chrysler Ignition Switches Are Investigated

06/18/2014

Concern over the safety of ignition switches in vehicles is spreading beyond General Motors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating about 1.2 million Chrysler minivans and sport utility vehicles over a concern that jostling the ignition key could accidentally turn off the engine and disable the air bags.

The issue appears similar to the defect that has thrown General Motors into turmoil and forced it to recall millions of vehicles for a defect the that automaker has admitted is linked to at least 13 deaths.

The Chrysler action — pertaining to Jeep Commanders and Grand Cherokees; Grand Caravan and Town and Country minivans; and Journey sport utility vehicles — comprises two investigations.

The first covers about 525,000 Jeep Commanders from the 2006 and 2007 model years, and Jeep Grand Cherokees from the 2005 and 2006 model years, according to a report published Wednesday on the agency’s website.

The agency says it has received at least 32 complaints from the Jeep owners say that the driver’s knee hit the ignition key.

“This causes the engine to shut off, affects power steering and brakes and may potentially result in the vehicle’s air bags not deploying during a frontal crash,” the report said.

Some of those complaints were filed with the safety agency at least six years ago.

“This has happened four times now,” wrote one owner in a complaint filed in June 2008. “I was driving my one-year-old son to the babysitter’s house. My knee bumped the key as I was approaching a turn, shutting off the vehicle/power steering. So, I kept going straight and nearly crashes. Luckily I slammed the brakes and stopped just in time.”

The second action covers about 700,000 Grand Caravan, Town and Country minivans and the Journey sport utility vehicles from the 2008 to 2010 model years, according to a report by the agency also posted Wednesday.

This investigation relates to a 2011 Chrysler recall of about 248,000 2010 Grand Caravans, Town and Country minivans and Journeys for an ignition-key problem that could also result in the engine’s being inadvertently turned off. That action also included about 12,000 Volkswagen Routan models from 2010 that were built by Chrysler.

But the safety regulators say they have received 23 complaints about ignition-key problems from owners of 2008 — 10 versions of those models that were not recalled and a few who said they have the recall fix and the problem occurred again. So, it is investigating whether the automaker should be required to expand the recall.

Chrysler could not immediately be reached for comment.

VW recalling 18,500 minivans for ignition problems

Washington — Volkswagen AG is recalling 18,500 2009 Routan minivans because the ignition key can move to the “off” or “accessory” position under rough road conditions, causing the vehicle to potentially stall and the airbags to fail in the event of the crash.

VW is the latest automaker to recall vehicles for ignition problems since General Motors Co. has recalled more than 17 million vehicles this year worldwide for ignition problems. Chrysler Group LLC — a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV — built the Routan for VW — largely a rebadged Chrysler Town and Country/Dodge Grand Caravan — and informed VW of the need for the recall.

VW will modify the ignition switch and begin the recall this month.

In late June, Chrysler said it would recall nearly 696,000 minivans and SUVs worldwide under government pressure because ignition keys could rotate out of the "on" position, potentially causing stalling and the air bag not to deploy in a front-end crash. Chrysler said it was expand a 2011 recall — that also covered some Routan vehicles — to cover the 2009 Dodge Journey and 2008-09 Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country "for inadvertent ignition key rotation from the run position to the accessory position."

VW has now recalled about 31,000 vehicles since 2011 for the issue.

Chrysler said it was fixing the vehicles by installing a more robust ignition module detent ring.

Chrysler said it had about 30 customer complaints and 465 warranty claims alleging inadvertent engine shut-off while driving — and reports of two rear-end collisions arising from the condition. There are no reports of deaths or injuries from air bags failing to deploy in crashes linked to the defect.

Chrysler disclosed that on June 17, NHTSA asked the automaker in a phone call to recall the 2008-09 vehicles. But the automaker is standing by its recall remedy — adding a detent ring to the switch to make it stiffer, instead of replacing the entire part — even though NHTSA has concerns it may not work.

Chrysler has now recalled about 1.7 million vehicles for ignition switch problems since 2011. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still is investigating whether Chrysler's fix is adequate in most of the recalled vehicles. In July, Chrysler also said was recalling nearly 800,000 older Jeep SUVs for ignition switch problems, and is urging owners to only use the ignition key as the automaker works to find a fix.

The company said the recall covers some 2006-07 Jeep Commander and 2005-07 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, and said its engineers are seeking a remedy. "Chrysler is committing now to conduct a recall out of an abundance of caution," the company said.

Chrysler advised owners to make sure there is enough clearance between their knees and the keys so that the key doesn't get bumped and accidentally turn off the engine. As a further precaution, owners are advised to remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key.

The problem is similar to the issue that has rocked cross-town rival General Motors Co. after it failed to promptly recall 2.6 million cars linked to at least 13 deaths when air bags failed to deploy after vehicles stalled. GM has recalled about 15 million other vehicles for other ignition problems this year.

In an interview in July, acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman said the agency is looking more broadly at the issue of whether other automakers have ignition issues: "This whole GM Cobalt recall brought to light a whole set of new information about interactions between ignition switches and air bags. We quickly jumped on that new information ... We're still in that process."

The Commander and Grand Cherokee have a different ignition switch — an instrument panel mounted switch — compared to column ignition switches in the minivans.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will modify the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1- 800-822-8987. Volkswagens number for this recall is 28G1/U8. Note: This campaign is an expansion of NHTSA Recall No. 11V-151.

Fiat Chrysler planning for big recall on engine used in Jeeps

Aug. 5, 2020

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is preparing for a possible recall related to an issue affecting upward of one million vehicles, likely including Jeep SUV models, equipped with its 2.4-liter Tigershark engine.

The expected recall is related to emissions testing conducted on the gasoline engine and, according to the company, is not connected to claims summed up in various lawsuits that the engines burn excessive amounts of oil, which could cause stalling. It's not known how soon the recall could happen.

"In connection with internal testing, we determined that approximately 1 million vehicles equipped with the 2.4L Tigershark engine may have excess tailpipe emissions," FCA said in a recent regulatory filing.

The extent of pollution from the Tigershark emissions was not clear. FCA said it has been in contact with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board about the situation.

"FCA has been working closely with EPA and CARB, and we continue to do so, on a group of vehicles equipped with Tigershark engines. As this population ages, some vehicles exceed in-use emission requirements, depending on drive cycle and mileage. We are conducting test programs to define a remedy, which also requires approval by the agencies. Affected customers will be advised when service becomes available, and will be provided free of charge. This is not a safety issue and there are no enforcement actions," according to a company statement provided by spokesman Eric Mayne.

The EPA, through spokesperson Enesta Jones, responded to an email from the Free Press by saying that FCA is doing a voluntary recall based on in-use testing done by EPA. The agency released a report last year highlighting its increasing efforts to monitor vehicle emissions, noting that 86 recalls, affecting more than 4.9 million light-duty vehicles, were conducted in 2017.

The Tigershark issue, according to FCA, is not connected to the company's diesel emissions troubles , which have echoes of but apparently not the scope of Volkswagen's Dieselgate. FCA and German supplier Bosch agreed to a civil settlement last year, which called for the owners of about 100,000 2014-16 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500s — the vehicles at issue — to get payments of about $3,000 each. FCA denied wrongdoing, although prosecutors accused the company of installing so-called defeat devices on the vehicles to cheat emissions tests. An FCA manager later placed on leave, Emanuele Palma, has been indicted, and FCA said in the regulatory filing it is in talks with both the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Justice Department's Criminal Division, which are investigating.

The Tigershark emissions issue was referenced in the same regulatory filing, which also highlighted oil consumption complaints. Those complaints have led to class-action lawsuits against the company in California and Michigan related to the engine, which, FCA said, has been installed in about 1.6 million vehicles sold in the United States. FCA, through its spokesman, said it doesn't discuss ongoing litigation but that if customers have concerns they can contact their dealers.

One of the lawsuits, filed in U.S. District Court in May in Detroit, said the engine was installed in six models, the 2014-20 Jeep Cherokee, 2017-20 Jeep Compass, 2015-20 Jeep Renegade, 2015-16 Chrysler 200, 2013-16 Dodge Dart and the 2016-20 Fiat 500X.

Kyle Davis of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is one of the plaintiffs. He bought a 2015 Dodge Dart, which he still owns, from Carvana in April 2018.

Davis replaced the spark plugs after less than 800 miles because the car kept shutting down, and he followed the suggested maintenance schedule for oil changes, the suit said.

"When plaintiff checked the oil he noticed the dipstick was completely dry and had to use three quarts of oil to fill (the car). In November 2019, plaintiff was driving 60 miles per hour on the freeway when the affected vehicle shut down on him without warning. This was particularly dangerous because the other vehicles on the freeway also had no warning that the affected vehicle would suddenly slow down," according to the suit.

Davis took the car for engine repairs to an FCA dealership, which did not give him a loaner. It took four weeks and $4,000 before Davis got his car back, and it still uses oil at an "abnormally high pace," the suit said.

Hundreds of owners have reported their vehicles shutting down without warning because of low oil levels or pressure, but the company describes it as normal in its technical service bulletins, the suit said.

”Moreover, the sudden shut-offs caused by the oil consumption defect could be avoided if FCA’s oil indicator system alerted drivers of the class vehicles that their engine oil was running low. But it does not. And this ‘oil indicator’ defect means that drivers of the class vehicles only become aware of a dangerously low engine-oil level after it causes an engine stall or shut-down, putting their lives at risk," the suit said.

Statement: Powertrain Control Module Software

August 21, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 58,016 vehicles in the U.S. to update certain powertrain software that will help prevent engine stall.

An FCA investigation discovered the tone wheel in a small percentage of engines may, over time, lose magnetic material. Should this occur, it may disrupt signal transmission to a sensor that monitors crankshaft position – a condition that may contribute to engine stall.

FCA is unaware of any related injuries or accidents. However, the Company urges customers to follow the instructions on their recall notices; mailing will begin no later than Oct. 1.

Customers with additional questions or concerns may contact their dealers or call (800) 853-1403.

The recall is limited to certain model-year 2014-2019 Ram 1500 Classic pickup trucks and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines. Service will be provided free of charge.

Like-model vehicles equipped with gasoline engines are not subject to this recall. And vehicles equipped with FCA’s newer, third-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 are similarly unaffected.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 22,079) and certain markets outside North America (est. 51,879), a population that also includes model-year 2014-2019 Chrysler 300 full-size sedans equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines.

Statement: Floor mats

August 28, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 186,233 pickup trucks, globally, because their adjustable pedals may be positioned in a location that affords insufficient clearance with all-weather floor mats.

FCA is unaware of any related accidents or injuries. These and all FCA vehicles are equipped with brake-throttle override, which enables continuous brake-pedal application to automatically overcome simultaneous accelerator-pedal application.

Affected customers will receive recall notices. In the interim, FCA advises those who ordered all-weather mats as a factory-installed item, to contact their dealers, who will modify the mats pending replacement with a new design.

An estimated one percent of the recall population may exhibit this issue. Should customers observe insufficient accelerator-pedal clearance, or they are unable to visit their dealers in a timely fashion, FCA recommends they remove their all-weather floor mats until they obtain service.

This recall follows an FCA investigation launched after a customer reported a floor mat interfered with the accelerator pedal while driving. The customer used brake-throttle override to safely stop the vehicle.

Introduced to FCA’s lineup in 2003, brake-throttle override has been standard equipment on all FCA vehicles since 2011.

The recall is limited to certain model-year 2019-2020 Ram 1500 pickups equipped with adjustable pedals. Recall notices will advise customers to bring in their floor mats for modification, pending exchange for new mats with an improved design.

The campaign covers an estimated 160,229 vehicles in the U.S. and additional vehicles in Canada (est. 21,937), Mexico (est. 872) and certain markets outside North America (3,195).

Also subject to recall are an estimated 43,148 all-weather floor mats sold as aftermarket equipment. Affected customers will be advised to bring their mats to a dealer for modification, pending replacement.

In the interim, these customers may also contact their dealers if they have concerns.

September 9, 2020 — More than 34,400 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks are recalled if equipped with Cummins 6.7L High Output engines.

Chrysler says the powertrain control modules may have engine calibration software that does not provide adequate engine warm up protection.

The 2019-2020 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks lack warmup protection that leads to a lack of oil film on the engine connecting rod bearings while the engines reach operating temperatures.

This may cause failures of the connecting rods which could puncture the Cummins engine blocks.

The Cummins 6.7L High Output engine blocks may leak oil that contacts hot engine or exhaust components which results in fires.

More than 32,300 Ram trucks are recalled in the U.S., and more than 2,100 trucks are recalled in Canada.

September 10, 2020 — A Dodge Charger Pursuit recall has been issued for more than 27,000 police cars because of problems with the rearview camera images.

The 2018-2020 Dodge Charger Pursuit cars each have a "stealth mode," and in stealth mode the backup camera rearview image will fail to display when the Charger is in REVERSE.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) says this is a violation of federal safety standards.

Federal safety standards require the rearview camera system default to a visible rearview image being visible each time the driver backs up. This must occur regardless of any modifications to the field of view the driver had previously selected.

The Chargers fail to perform this task in stealth mode due to problems with the body control module software, leaving drivers unable to view rearview images while backing up.

More than 26,300 Dodge Charger Pursuits are recalled in the U.S. and 831 police cars are recalled in Canada.

Chrysler says to fix the problem, dealerships will update the body control module software to disable stealth modes when the Dodge Charger Pursuits are shifted into REVERSE.

Mirror Glass Detaches From Ram 1500 and 2500 Trucks

October 24, 2020 — Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 trucks are recalled because the driver's side mirror glass may detach from the backing plates.

More than 21,700 model year 2020 Ram 1500 and 2500 trucks are included in the U.S. and Canadian recalls.

Chrysler opened an investigation into the Ram trucks in August and in September engineers determined the driver-side mirror assemblies had glass not properly adhered to the mirror backing plates.

Federal safety standards dictate each passenger vehicle of "4,536 kg or less shall have either (a) Mirrors that conform to the requirements of S5.; or (b) Outside mirrors of unit magnification, each with not less than 126 cm2 of reflective surface."

If the rearview mirror glass detaches, there is no reflective surface, a violation of safety standards.

There are more than 19,000 recalled Ram trucks in the U.S. and another 2,660 trucks are recalled in Canada.

The Ram 1500 and 2500 mirror recall will begin November 27, 2020. Dealerships will replace the driver's side mirror glass, but concerned truck owners may call 800-853-1403.

Ram 1500 EGR Cooler Recall Allegedly Failed

Ram 1500 class action lawsuit alleges EGR cooler recall failed, causing trucks to catch fire.

October 29, 2020 — A Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall allegedly failed to help customers of 2014–2019 Ram 1500 and Ram 1500 Classic trucks equipped with 3.0L EcoDiesel engines.

The Ram 1500 exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler lawsuit alleges Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) sold hundreds of thousands of the trucks between June 12, 2013, to October 23, 2019.

According to the class action lawsuit, the EGR coolers are prone to thermal fatigue which may cause the coolers to crack internally over time.

"An EGR cooler with an internal crack will introduce preheated, vaporized coolant to the EGR system while the engine is running. In certain circumstances, this mixture interacts with other hydrocarbons and air in the system, potentially resulting in combustion within the intake manifold, which may lead to a vehicle fire.” - Ram lawsuit
The trucks will suddenly lose power and possibly catch fire, which is what occurred to a plaintiff who sued.

EGR Cooler Recall Filled with Delays and Failures

A Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall was announced in October 2019 for 107,898 model year 2014-2019 Ram 1500 trucks in the U.S. However, the plaintiffs claim the automaker made a number of misrepresentations that caused truck customers to park their vehicles.

According to the EGR cooler lawsuit, when Chrysler announced the recall the automaker told truck customers, “the remedy for this condition is not currently available” but that the company was “making every effort to finalize the remedy as quickly as possible . . .

Affected Ram 1500 recall customers were told they would be notified when a fix was available, something the plaintiffs say created the expectation a fix would soon be available.

In the interim, Ram 1500 customers were told to monitor their coolant levels and contact dealers if the levels were consistently low. The plaintiffs claim this created the impression that monitoring the problem would prevent the known dangers.

Replacement parts are consistently unavailable

The plaintiffs also claim Ram owners take their trucks to dealers for repairs based on Chrysler's recall notice, but dealers allegedly routinely say repair parts aren't available. Adding to the insult is how dealers are allegedly told replacement parts are very limited and the EGR cooler should be replaced only if the part has failed.

The automaker allegedly concealed the EGR cooler defect, led customers to believe a fix was near, told customers a fix was available and then turned away Ram 1500 owners and lessees when they tried to have their trucks repaired.

A plaintiff who sued says he purchased a used 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel for his construction business in August 2019. The plaintiff received a Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall notice in October or November 2019, but the notice said there was no fix available. The Ram owner was told to monitor the coolant levels and contact a dealer if the levels were low.

The plaintiff says he tried to have the EGR cooler fixed by a dealer but the dealer didn't have replacement coolers.

About seven months later the plaintiff was driving the Ram when it filled with smoke and lost all power. Five occupants were able to exit the truck before several explosions occurred and the Ram 1500 was engulfed in flames until the fire was extinguished by the fire department. (Photo above)

Two days later the plaintiff went back to the dealership and let them know about the fire. The Ram 1500 owner was allegedly told technicians could only fix one EGR cooler per week and his truck was number 20 on the waiting list.

According to the lawsuit, this means his truck wouldn't have received the EGR cooler until the second week of December 2020.

The Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin: Anderson, et al., v. FCA US LLC.

The plaintiffs are represented by Turke & Strauss LLP, and Robins Kaplan LLP.

The recall notice, lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says “the differential gear splines inside the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) may fail.”
“Wear on the PTU splines can cause a loss of power while the vehicle is moving and the loss of the PARK function while stationary,” it continues.
“A loss of power or 'park' function increases the risk of an accident and serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR Cooler Recall For Fires

Chrysler recalls more than 34,000 Grand Cherokees after EGR coolers cause coolant leaks.

November 21, 2020 — A Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR cooler recall has been issued for 34,334 model year 2014-2019 SUVs equipped with 3-liter EcoDiesel engines.

The exhaust gas recirculation coolers may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR systems. This can occur while the engines are running, and combustion inside the intake manifolds can cause fires.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) didn't report how many engine compartment fires are blamed on the EGR coolers. But Chrysler says since October 26 there have been "119 customer assistance records, 6 field reports, and 1,478 warranty claims."

The automaker opened an internal investigation in September due to an increasing trend of engine compartment fires coming from the Jeep Grand Cherokee intake manifolds.

Pressure testing on a Canadian Grand Cherokee following a fire showed a leak in the step tube of the cooler, and diesel engineers confirmed the engine compartment fires were caused by EGR cooler leaks.

Engineers determined the EGR coolers can crack from "thermal fatigue," but Chrysler says it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the EGR coolers.

FCA says production of the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokees began in December 2012 and ended in January 2019 based on 3.0L EcoDiesel engine assembly records.

A Grand Cherokee driver may notice coolant is missing but won't see leaked coolant on the ground, the heater may not work properly and a warning light may illuminate.

The U.S. Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR cooler recall includes 28,884 SUVs and a recall in Canada involves 5,450 Grand Cherokees.

Owners of 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokees may be eligible for reimbursements if they paid for EGR cooler replacements.

Jeep dealerships will replace the Grand Cherokee EGR coolers with new coolers which FCA says are not prone to thermal fatigue and cracks. It's also possible the intake manifolds may be replaced.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR recall will begin December 31, 2020. Grand Cherokee owners may contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask about reference number W79.

Jeep Wranglers from the 2018-2021 model years and Gladiators from the 2020-2021 model years with manual transmissions are being recalled because they could pose an increased fire risk and create road debris.

The problem is that the clutch pressure plate, used to transfer power from the engine to the transmission, could overheat and cause the clutch to fracture. Such a fracture could cause cracks or holes in the transmission case, allowing heated debris to be expelled.
In some circumstances, drivers may smell a burnt clutch odor before the failure.

Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, is aware of one accident but no injuries related to this problem. A total of 42,887 vehicles are affected by this recall. Owners will be notified in mid-March.

The Details
Vehicles recalled: 2018-2021 Jeep Wrangler SUVs annd 2020-2021 Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks with a manual transmission.

The problem: Clutch components can overheat and fail.

The fix: Dealerships will update software to reduce engine torque capability when clutch assembly temperatures rise to a level that may damage the inner pressure plate.

How to contact the manufacturer: Stellantis/FCA customer service can be reached at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 21V028000. The Stellantis number for this recall is Y01.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.

Dodge Releases Muscle Car Theft Deterrent

Mar 23, 2021

But is this really enough?
Dodge muscle car theft has become so bad lately that the automaker has released a software upgrade designed to thwart criminals looking to swipe your ride. This comes hot on the heels of thieves stealing two Dodge Durango Hellcats from the factory, along with the many, many Dodges stolen across the nation, some even in broad daylight.

Still not convinced Dodge muscle car thefts are a problem? Watch this video right here and you will.
As we’ve shown in surveillance videos of Dodge muscle cars being stolen, thieves seem to have no serious problems with boosting them. This new upgrade allows the owner to use their four-digit security code to limit the engine speed to idle and cut output to just 3 horsepower, which is supposed to keep criminals from stealing the car.

According to Tim Kuniskis, Dodge CEO at Stellantis, this upgrade can be installed on 2015 and newer Dodge muscle cars. This is supposed to be a “double verification security system” which is also called dual authentication, a measure used to secure many online accounts today against hacking attempts. It would prevent thieves from capturing the radio signal emitted by a car’s key fob, a common way criminals boost modern vehicles with keyless ignition systems. In the official press release, Stellantis calls it “second-level vehicle security encryption” which runs through the Uconnect 4C system.

No doubt, Dodge has been dealing with an increasingly tarnished image with theft of its high-powered muscle cars seemingly getting only more popular. We’ve been covering this trend long before other sites since it hits our niche of the market particularly hard. And we’ll keep giving coverage to the trend, which hopefully will taper off.

This sounds like a nice idea, but only time will tell if it will work. Plus, you have to take your car to a Dodge dealership to have it installed, which should be a quick process. For now, the only cars which qualify for the upgrade are 2015 through 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT or Charger SRT models equipped with 392-cu.-in. HEMI V8 or supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engines, as well as owners of 2019-2021 Scat Packs equipped with 392-cu.-in HEMI V8 engines.

The software upgrade likely won’t be ready until sometime in the second quarter of 2021. In other words, you’ll have to hang tight for a few months.

Dodge Announces New Security Feature for Charger and Challenger Muscle Cars

    • Second-level security offered for high-performance Dodge Charger and Challenger models equipped with 392-cu.-in. HEMI® V-8 or supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 engines
    • New Security Mode limits engines to idle speed
    • Four-digit secondary encryption protects against key-code-spoofing thieves
    • No-charge retroactive upgrade available for affected 2015-2021 model-year vehicles

March 22, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Dodge today announced an automotive software upgrade designed to further thwart theft of Charger and Challenger models equipped with 392-cu.-in. HEMI® V-8 or supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 engines.

Using the Dodge owner’s four-digit security code, the enhanced deterrence feature limits the vehicle’s engine speed to idle (675 rpm) and helps prevent auto theft.

“Today, Dodge is launching a new owner-customized ‘double verification’ security system,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge Brand Chief Executive Officer – Stellantis. “When flashed into the computer of affected 2015 or newer Dodge muscle cars, the protective software will limit the engine output to less than 3 horsepower, foiling fast getaways and joyrides.”

The software upgrade can be installed free of charge by any Dodge dealer on 2015 through 2021 model-year Dodge muscle cars. The complimentary enhancement applies second-level vehicle security encryption via Dodge’s Uconnect 4C infotainment system.

“More than 150 cars are stolen every day in the United States,” added Kuniskis. “For any car owner, it's terrible, it's a hassle and it's a personal violation. Though statistically rare, car thieves have targeted the high-horsepower Dodge muscle cars, and we want the Dodge ‘Brotherhood’ to know we’re taking quick action and covering their backs.”

At idle, these engines produce approximately 2.8 horsepower and 22 lb.-ft. of torque. As a result, Dodge’s enhanced security measures have a secondary public safety benefit by preventing criminal police evasion and high-speed chases of stolen vehicles.

Double encryption has become common on consumer online accounts and adds a second layer of owner protection against vehicle theft.

The four-digit encryption code is designed to discourage key-code-spoofing thieves.

Dodge will continue to pursue other enhancements to vehicle-theft deterrence in order to protect owners’ investments.

Owners of 2015 through 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT or Charger SRT models equipped with 392-cu.-in. HEMI V-8 or supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 engines, as well as owners of 2019-2021 Scat Packs equipped with 392-cu.-in HEMI V-8 engines, should contact their local Dodge dealer to schedule a free Security Mode installation appointment.

Dodge expects the new security feature to be available late in the second quarter of 2021.

10,000-Mile Update
There is little disagreement among our staff that our Jeep Gladiator Mojave is cool, what with its rugged swagger, removable top and doors, manual transmission, and impressive off-road credentials. "Is it $58K cool?" opined technical editor David Beard in the Gladiator's logbook. "No, not even close." That declaration may be a little premature considering our truck has only just crossed the quarter-way point of its 40,000-mile test, but it does illustrate that things have not gone as swimmingly as we had hoped for Jeep's 10Best-winning compact pickup.
Cool or not, our Gladiator has already earned a big demerit for spending a combined 29 days out of service to have its transmission replaced under warranty. Less than 1000 miles after its first scheduled service visit at 7600 miles—a $94 job consisting of an oil change, tire rotation, and various inspections—we returned to have the dealer diagnose a rattling from its clutch and a whining noise from the gearbox itself, particularly when in lower gears. Per a recent recall for certain manual-transmission Wranglers and Gladiators, Jeep HQ advised the dealer to replace the six-speed and inspect the clutch assembly. That inspection revealed multiple overheated sections on the clutch's pressure plate and excessive play in the dual-mass flywheel, both of which necessitated the replacement of the full assembly.

Thankfully, nothing failed catastrophically and caused a fire, which was the main concern of the recall. But the dealer did not yet have the tools needed to disassemble the transmission, so an investigative tear down could not be performed. Nor has the dealer yet received Jeep's latest software update, which addresses the recall issue by supposedly limiting the engine's torque if the clutch gets too hot again. We'll have that update installed as soon as it's available, but our Mojave's new drivetrain appears to be operating as it should for now.

The Gladiator's regular operation comes with its own share of issues, though. As we assumed when we configured our long-termer, its composition does not make it the best daily commuter or long-range highway traveler. For one, the Mojave is painfully slow, thanks in part to the peaky nature of its 3.6-liter gas V-6, which has to be thrashed to around 4000 rpm before it makes any meaningful grunt. Having to operate the clunky six-speed shifter and clutch pedal doesn't help matters, even though the entertaining novelty of a stick shift does suit a solid-axle Jeep's character. As some of us adapt to our truck's plodding nature better than others, logbook musings have questioned whether the Gladiator's available diesel V-6—which sadly both isn't offered on the Mojave trim and requires the optional eight-speed automatic—might have been a more livable setup.

Photo credit: Marc Urbano - Car and Driver

Owing in part to its stick axles, big all-terrain tires, and blocky profile, the Mojave also came under fire for its susceptibility to crosswinds, which magnifies its already pronounced tendency to wander between lane lines. Along with the cacophony of wind and road noise that permeates our Jeep's cabin at speed (with the hardtop installed), "The driving experience is pretty atrocious," observed director of vehicle testing Dave VanderWerp on an extended road trip with his family, noting that he was regularly holding 45 degrees of steering input to prevent the Gladiator from leaving its lane. Beard concurred. "Heavy-duty trucks track with more precision." He's also a bit salty about the meager 4500-pound tow rating of our manual-Mojave model. Indeed, that's down from the automatic version's 6000-pound maximum and less than many soft-roading crossovers can tug. "Pulling a two-place (3500-pound) snowmobile trailer can be done, but it's far from enjoyable," he added.
We're also not enjoying how frequently we have to fill the Mojave's 22.0-gallon fuel tank. Despite regular adventures around Michigan and long-haul voyages to Virginia and Tennessee, our truck continues to average just 15 mpg—the same figure that it returned on our 75-mph highway test, which is a pitiful 8 mpg less than its EPA estimate. "This is the rare gas-powered car that gets better fuel economy in stop-and-go city driving than on the highway," noted VanderWerp.
Photo credit: Marc Urbano - Car and Driver

Photo credit: Marc Urbano - Car and Driver

But with 27,000 miles still to go in our test, we're far from ready to admit we botched our truck's configuration. Jeep's Desert-rated Gladiator still rides impressively well considering its antiquated suspension, even our largest drivers have found comfort in the Mojave trim's supportive front seats, and this big-tired pickup remains effortlessly cool, as many head-swiveling passersby continue to confirm. We can chalk up some of the frustrations with our truck to its stay thus far coinciding with Michigan's dreary cold-weather months, which many of us endure in a state of semi-hibernation. Once we can romp through the sand dunes in the summer sun and cruise along the lakeside with the top and doors off, we'll hopefully be a little more forgiving of the Gladiator's shortcomings.

Introduction
The unique physical makeup of the Jeep Gladiator gives it an undeniable cool factor. While four-door compact pickups are nothing new, there's only one that's based on the rolling anachronism that is the Jeep Wrangler, convertible top and all. The Gladiator even can be had with a feature that has almost completely disappeared from new pickups: a manual transmission. We immediately fell for its unusual charm and solid versatility, naming it to our 2020 10Best list upon its debut and largely agreeing it was the new small truck we'd want to own, despite a comparison test proving that it wasn't the best at its core mission.
It took a while to recruit a Gladiator for our long-term 40,000-mile test regimen, but that delay ultimately worked to our benefit. After the Gladiator's launch, a compelling new version was added to the lineup. Introduced earlier this year, the Mojave trim level sits alongside the burly Rubicon at the top of the Gladiator's model range and is the first of the Jeep brand's Desert Rated vehicles. Building on Jeep's familiar Trail Rated models that are fortified for conventional off-roading with stronger four-wheel-drive systems, skid plates, and upgraded tires, the Mojave is designed to excel in higher-speed off-road environments.

Along with a reinforced frame, 33-inch-tall tires on 17-inch wheels, and slight increases to the Gladiator's wheelbase and track, the Mojave gains new 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass dampers, a 1.0-inch front suspension lift, and secondary Fox hydraulic front jounce dampers, which serve as additional heavy-duty, short-stroke shock absorbers that help prevent the suspension from bottoming out. While its Dana 44 axles are similar to the Rubicon's, the Mojave also features stronger front steering knuckles, a beefier rear axle housing, and a transfer case with a taller low-range ratio, 2.72:1 versus the Rubicon's 4.00:1. Model-specific front seats with additional side bolstering also are included.

Lacking the Rubicon's electronically locking front differential and disconnecting front anti-roll bar, the Mojave suffers a little when tackling mud holes and more technical off-road obstacles. But it does have a new Off Road Plus drive mode that dials back the traction control's intervention and sharpens the responses of the throttle and automatic transmission. For the 2021 model year, Off Road Plus also allows the Mojave's standard rear locking differential to be activated in 4HI mode. (The Rubicon's rear locker works only in 4LO.) Our truck does not have that ability at the moment, but Jeep says that it is working to make the feature a no-cost retrofit on 2020 models.

Photo credit: Michael Simari - Car and Driver

The 2020 Mojave carries the same $45,370 base price as the Rubicon. We opted for a rugged-looking coat of Gobi Clear Coat paint with black aluminum wheels and a black interior. The costliest option on our truck is the $1845 upgraded Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and an Alpine audio system. But we also splurged $1595 on leather upholstery, $1295 for a black three-piece removable hardtop, $1195 in LED exterior lights, and $1050 for protective rock-slider rails under the door sills.
Numerous smaller extras upped our truck's as-tested figure to $58,920, which is still less than pretty much every other Gladiator we've evaluated. Additional options include parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring ($895), a cargo management bundle with a bed-mounted power outlet and a lockable storage bin under the rear seat ($895), adaptive cruise control ($795), heaters for the steering wheel and front seats ($695), a roll-up tonneau cover ($595), a forward-facing trail camera ($595), a headliner for the hardtop ($555), keyless entry ($495), a spray-in bedliner ($495), a towing package and hitch ($350), all-weather floor mats ($165), and a tie-down strap for the fold-down windshield ($40).

Photo credit: Michael Simari - Car and Driver

Our decision to pass on the Gladiator's newly optional EcoDiesel V-6 was easy because it's only available on 2021 Sport, Overland, and Rubicon models. Jeep deems the diesel's low-revving character to be less than ideal for the faster-paced action envisioned for the Mojave. What's more, the diesel can only be paired with the also-optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Notwithstanding the financial toll of that $6000 upgrade, there are those among us that believe on principle that hard-core Jeeps should only be fitted with stick shifts. For us, it was the Gladiator's standard 285-hp 3.6-liter gas V-6 and six-speed manual or nothing.
The big drawback of this configuration is that it reduces the truck's towing capacity. Whereas some models can tug up to 7650 pounds with the gas V-6, the Mojave's soft suspension limits it to 6000 pounds with the automatic. Opt for the manual, however, and that maximum falls to just 4500 pounds. Payload capacity is capped at 1200 pounds.
Photo credit: Michael Simari - Car and Driver

Photo credit: Michael Simari - Car and Driver

This is the first time we've had a Mojave at the test track—or, for that matter, a manual Gladiator of any type. But compared to the last Rubicon model equipped with the eight-speed automatic we evaluated, our 5175-pound long-termer weighs 83 fewer pounds. It takes a fair amount of work to reach the gas V-6's 4400-rpm torque peak, and the outright thrust it provides is merely adequate. Once our truck completed Jeep's short 300-mile break-in period, a brutal high-rpm clutch drop in 4HI launched it to 60 mph in a lazy 8.5 seconds—0.2 second slower than the Rubicon. Our truck trailed its sibling by the same amount (and 4 mph) through the quarter-mile, tripping the lights in 16.5 seconds at 82 mph. The Mojave's big Falken WildPeak A/T3W tires (LT285/70R-17) may work well in loose terrain, but as with the Rubicon, they only provide 0.72 g of grip on the skidpad. Stops from 70 mph take a long 197 feet.
Based on the action our Gladiator's already seen, its duty cycle will be an active one. Along with general commuting, it's towed a 3500-pound ski boat with no issue, visited our local off-road park, and traveled both north to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and south to Virginia International Raceway. Drivers seem to agree that the Mojave's softly sprung suspension and long wheelbase allow it to ride more comfortably than other new solid-axle Jeeps. Its steering is vague, its handling is clumsy, and the manual's long throws and numb clutch pedal are anything but precise. But we anticipated as much. More important, this is simply an enjoyable machine to operate. "Super fun," "an authentic Jeep experience," and "the best way to drive a Gladiator" all grace our truck's early logbook entries.
Photo credit: Michael Simari - Car and Driver

Photo credit: Michael Simari - Car and Driver

However, commenters have also noted plenty of shortcomings, including the Mojave's dismal 15-mpg average fuel economy. While some drivers find it quieter inside than they expected, our Gladiator's 71 decibels of interior noise at 70 mph is loud enough to impair the functionality of its voice recognition system. Its pedals also are spaced rather far apart for heel-and-toe work, and there's no dead pedal to rest your left foot. In back, the shallow cargo box is not tall enough with the tonneau cover installed to accommodate even a moderately sized cooler.
And all drivers agree that the Mojave is painfully slow, especially on the highway. "One-hundred-percent throttle is needed to merge, to climb, to pass, to get anywhere," wrote staff editor Austin Irwin. Testing deputy director K.C. Colwell echoed that sentiment on his trek to VIR, adding that downshifting to fourth gear for long stretches at a time was the only way to make meaningful progress in the Appalachians. On level ground and with the manual in sixth gear, the Mojave required a staggering 24.3 seconds to complete the 30-to-50-mph and 50-to-70-mph passing tests. With many adventures and more than 35,000 miles to go in our test, we'll have plenty of opportunities to see if the Mojave's unique charms can outweigh its negatives.

Dodge Durango Recall Issued For Missing Parts

More than 3,000 Durango SUVs recalled to inspect fasteners related to the side curtain airbags.

May 1, 2021 — Missing or loose parts on 2020-2021 Dodge Duranos have caused a recall of more than 3,000 SUVs, with 2,721 of those recalled in the U.S. and about 290 SUVs recalled in Canada.

Chrysler says 2020-2021 Dodge Durango side airbag curtain fasteners may be loose or missing, causing problems with the airbags when they deploy.

Chrysler says there are no defective parts because the Durango problem was caused during assembly when the SUVs were built with loose or missing C-pillar side curtain airbag fasteners.

The automaker learned of a problem in December 2020 when a 2021 Dodge Durango was brought into service for a noise/rattle complaint. Technicians found the SUV was missing the C-pillar side curtain airbag fastener.

This caused Chrysler (Stellantis) to open an investigation which revealed some Durangos may have been built with loose or missing fasteners.

The suspect period began on March 1, 2020, when the side curtain airbag C-pillar fasteners were first incorrectly torqued during production, through February 15, 2021, when torque operations were fixed.

As of April 15, 2021, Chrysler has received seven warranty claims, two field reports and no reports of crashes or injuries.

Dodge dealerships will inspect and possibly install the fasteners, ensuring they are tightened to specification.

The Dodge Durango recall is expected to begin June 11, 2021.

SUV owners may contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and refer to recall reference number Y16.

Fires Cause Recall of 2021 Jeep Cherokees

Nearly 19,000 model year 2021 Cherokees were equipped with defective transmission oil cooler hoses.

May 9, 2021 — A 2021 Jeep Cherokee recall of nearly 19,000 SUVs over a risk of fires from transmission fluid leaks. Stellantis (Chrysler) says fluid could leak from the transmission oil cooler rubber hoses which may not have been cured properly.

Chrysler opened an investigation in March due to a trend in engine fires caused by ruptured transmission oil cooler hoses in 2021 Jeep Cherokees.

The automaker learned a supplier (Yokohama) replaced a fuse for a water pump for the curing machine in November 2020. And Chrysler confirmed the failed transmission oil cooler hoses weren't cured properly and all the hoses had specific date/time stamps that matched the November 2020 supplier action.

The Jeep Cherokees were equipped with the defective hoses between January 19, 2021, and March 8, 2021.

The automaker says it isn't aware of any crashes or injuries caused by leaking hoses, but Chrysler didn't say how many fires are suspected.

As of April 20, 2021, Chrysler is aware of "four customer assistance records, 160 warranty claims, and seven field reports potentially related to this issue for all markets."

Jeep dealers will replace the transmission oil cooler hoses as described in the owner notification letters which will be mailed June 23, 2021.

Jeep Cherokee owners may contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's Jeep Cherokee recall reference number is Y18.

Statement: Wheel Studs

May 28, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 446,643 U.S.-market vehicles to correct their service and owner’s manuals, and inspect and replace their wheel studs, as needed.

Routine customer data analysis led to an FCA US investigation that discovered certain service and owner’s manuals contain incorrect lug-nut torque instructions. Accordingly, the corresponding vehicles may have had their lug nuts over-torqued, a condition that could conceivably compromise studs and lead to wheel separation.

There is no component defect and torque applied during vehicle assembly is within specification, so the recall condition may only be present in vehicles that have been subject to wheel-removal as part of a service or upfit procedure.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

Dealers are currently in possession of correct service instructions, and production vehicles are now being delivered with updated owner’s manuals. The campaign is limited to vehicles equipped with dual rear wheels and flanged lug nuts.

Affected are certain model-year 2012-2021 Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickups, and 4500 and 5500 cab-chassis vehicles. FCA US will advise these customers when service becomes available; those with additional questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

As with all safety recalls, service will be provided of charge.

The recall affects additional vehicles in Canada (est. 31,086), and certain markets outside North America (est. 104). An estimated 32,365 Ram 4000 cab-chassis trucks are affected in Mexico.

Ram 1500 Recall Announced Over Rearview Camera Images

More than 14,000 model year 2021 Ram 1500 trucks may not show the backup camera images.

June 17, 2021 — A 2021 Ram 1500 recall has been announced for more than 14,000 trucks equipped with trailer reverse steering modules because the rearview camera images may not display.

Federal safety standards require the rearview camera system default to the visible rearview image at the beginning of each backing event even if the driver made previous modifications to the field of view. But the Ram 1500 trucks may not display the rearview images during backing events.

A Ram truck driver won't see an image when shifting into REVERSE, and the electronic throttle control warning light will be illuminated.

Chrysler says in May engineers determined the trailer reverse steering modules could fail to power down correctly, causing the rearview camera images to fail when the Ram 1500s were started.

Fiat Chrysler dealers will update the reverse steering module software after owner recall notices are mailed July 30, 2021.

Owners of 2021 Ram 1500 trucks may call 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number Y30.

Ram Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over 5500 Chassis Cabs

Ram owner says his Ram 5500 didn't have enough warm up protection which destroyed the engine.

June 22, 2021 — A Ram class action lawsuit has been filed by the owner of a 2019 Ram 5500 Chassis Cab truck which allegedly suffered engine failure and caused the owner to buy a different vehicle.

The lawsuit includes 2019-2020 Ram 5500 Chassis Cab trucks equipped with Cummins diesel engines.

The Ram 5500 was towed to a Chrysler dealership to have the truck repaired under warranty. However, the Ram truck was at the dealership for nearly three months when the dealership finally informed the plaintiff no repairs were available under warranty.

The Ram class action lawsuit alleges the truck's computer recorded low oil pressure and the vehicle had been driven about 3,000 miles. The dealer allegedly said no warranty repairs were available.

“Concern Customer states oil leak Cause tech found large hole in engine block. tech started star case#101775894. star enginering (sic) and cummins verfied failure is not warrantable due to low oil pressue at the time of failure Correction warranty repair denied by chrysler and cummins. no repairs made (sic)”. — Ram 5500 service invoice
The plaintiff says he was told to contact Chrysler which opened a case number.

FCA allegedly contacted the plaintiff and told him Cummins did not want to fix or replace the Ram engine.

The Ram truck owner then took the vehicle to an expert diesel mechanic who allegedly found no evidence of misuse, abuse or neglect.

According to the diesel expert:

“After inspection of the vehicle I found a huge hole in the side of the engine block. One of the connection rods broke, which caused the hole in the block. This is caused by connecting rod bearing failure due to lack of oil pressure. While during some research on this particular truck and engine combination, I came across a service bulletin recall on this exact truck."
The mechanic said the recall indicates the engine computer must be reprogrammed for a low oil pressure problem when cold. Basically the computer was originally programmed to lower oil pressure when cold to speed up the warm up time.

The mechanic said Chrysler lowered the oil pressure too much which caused excessive wear to the engine bearings.

The Ram class action alleges the plaintiff still cannot drive the truck and he eventually purchased a different vehicle.

The Ram class action lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey: Ortiz, et al., v. FCA US LLC. et al.

The plaintiff is represented by the Law Office of Lewis G. Adler, and Perlman DePetris Consumer Law.
