Fiat Chrysler to recall nearly 700,000 SUVs for electrical fault risk

11/21/2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCHA.MI) said on Thursday it will recall nearly 700,000 sport utility vehicles worldwide because a faulty electrical connection could prevent engine starts or contribute to a stall.

The recall, covering 2011 through 2013 model year Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, will address silicon deposits on the contact points of fuel pump relays that may interrupt electrical current, Fiat Chrysler said in a statement. It said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the faulty vehicles.

The Italian-American automaker had previously recalled most of the same SUVs in 2014 and 2015 for issues with their fuel pump relays.

The company, which last month announced it planned to merge with Peugeot owner PSA (PEUP.PA), said it would notify owners at a later date when they will be able to schedule repairs at dealerships.

The recall includes around 528,500 vehicles in the United States, 34,700 in Canada, 18,100 in Mexico and 116,500 outside North America, it said.

Statement: Fuel Pump Relay

November 21, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 528,594 SUVs in the U.S. to help ensure the integrity of an electrical connection.

Feedback from FCA dealers led to an FCA investigation that discovered silicon deposits on the contact points of certain fuel pump relays may interrupt electrical current and prevent engine start-up and/or contribute to stall.

The Company is unaware of any potentially related injuries or accidents.

Affected are certain 2011-13 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Relays in the subject vehicles may have been installed in response to a previous recall.

Affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service, which will be provided free of charge. Those with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 34,764), Mexico (est. 18,152) and certain markets outside North America (est. 116,511).

Statement: Bushings

November 27, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 51,788 cars in the U.S. to replace their shift-cable bushings.

Feedback from the field prompted an FCA investigation that discovered certain bushings may, subject to heat and humidity exposure, degrade over time. Should this occur, a vehicle’s shift cable may separate from its transmission linkage, disrupting shifter function.

FCA is aware of three minor accidents that were potentially related, but the Company is unaware of any potentially related injuries.

If the condition occurs, customers may notice looser shifter movement. However, gear-selection as indicated in the instrument cluster will always be correct.

Customers are advised to heed owner’s manual instructions that urge regular parking-brake use.

The recall is limited to 2012-2013 Fiat 500 mini-compact cars. Service will be provided free of charge and affected customers will be notified accordingly; those with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

January 25, 2020 — More than 222,000 model year 2014-2019 Ram ProMaster vans are recalled because the transmission gear shifter cables may separate from the transmissions.

This will cause failures of the transmissions to shift gears selected by the drivers and the gear shifter lever positions won't match the transmission gears.

The vans equipped with 3.6-liter engines that may have been built with transmission gear shift cables that were kinked during the manufacturing process.

The "Vehicle Not in PARK" and the "Door Ajar" messages will display on the instrument clusters and chimes will sound if the driver's door is opened while the transmission is not in PARK.

Chrysler first learned of a possible problem in May 2019 when the automaker opened an investigation into the gear shift problems. At least 545 warranty claims have been filed, but Chrysler isn't aware of any crashes or injuries.

The 2014-2019 Ram ProMaster vans were built from April 23, 2013, through September 14, 2019, when the manufacturing process was changed.

The Ram ProMaster recall is expected to begin March 2020. Ram dealerships will replace the transmission shift cables, but concerned owners may call 866-726-4636.

February 4, 2020 — More than 3,300 model year 2020 Jeep Wrangler SUVs are recalled because the lower control arms may separate from the axles.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) says faulty weld locations on the left side of the Wrangler is what can cause the separation.

The Wranglers were built between July 22, 2019, to October 26, 2019, but they were manufactured with front axle lower control arm brackets that may not have been in the correct locations during the welding process.

FCA opened an internal investigation in October 2019 after a dealer technician submitted a report. The automaker collected four front axles with left front lower control arm brackets which had separated on 2020 Wranglers.

The SUVs had been in for warranty repairs, causing Chrysler to send the parts to the supplier which determined all four axles had welds in the wrong locations.

The SUV could be difficult to control or the lower control arm bracket could hit the ground once the control arm separates from the axle. A driver should be aware of noise from the front-end or vibration in the steering.

More than 3,000 Wranglers are recalled in the U.S. and 347 are recalled in Canada.

According to the automaker, no crashes or injuries have been reported due to the axle problems.

Chrysler says the 2020 Jeep Wrangler front axle recall will begin March 14, 2020. Dealerships will inspect the front axles and replace them if needed.

Jeep Wrangler owners may contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number W01.

Jeep Clutch Pressure Plate Recall For Wranglers, Gladiators

Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators with manual transmissions catch fire from clutch pressure plates.

March 12, 2020 — A Jeep clutch pressure plate recall has been issued for nearly 37,000 Wrangler and Gladiator SUVs equipped with manual transmissions.

Chrysler says the 2018-2020 Jeep Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator clutch pressure plates may overheat, fracture and cause fires.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) opened an internal investigation in November 2019 after fires occurred in 2018-2020 Jeep Wranglers and 2020 Jeep Gladiators.

In December investigators visited the scene of a fire that appeared to be related to the transmission. Chrysler engineers later determined the clutch pressure plate reached 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and the supplier determined the damaged plate was not an effect of the fire.

If a clutch pressure plate breaks, it can crack or break the transmission case and allow hot debris to make contact with ignition sources. In addition to the risk of fire, a fractured pressure plate can cause the Wrangler or Gladiator to lose propulsion and leave debris on the road.

A driver may notice the smell of a burnt clutch or feel changes in how the clutch pedal moves.

FCA is aware of at least 35 warranty claims, 13 field reports and one minor injury related to the pressure plates.

More than 33,200 vehicles are recalled in the U.S. and more than 3,500 are recalled in Canada.

Chrysler is still working on a fix for the clutch pressure plate problem, but the Jeep recall is expected to begin April 22, 2020.

Wrangler and Gladiator owners may call FCA at 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number W12.
