Recall Alert : RAM Trucks

Statement: Column-shifter Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI)

December 22, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 1.48 million trucks in the U.S. to help prevent occupants from inadvertently moving the vehicles’ gear-shifters out of the “park” position.

The recall is limited to vehicles equipped with shifters mounted on their steering columns. Those with rotary-dial shifters or floor-mounted shifters are unaffected.

An FCA US review of field data led to the discovery that Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) may not function properly if subject to specific high-temperature conditions for prolonged periods. The conditions are consistent with those that occur when there is protracted brake-pedal application while a vehicle is idling in park.

If BTSI becomes disabled, a vehicle’s shifter may be moved out of park without brake-pedal application, or the presence of a key in the ignition. In such circumstances, a vehicle may exhibit inadvertent movement – if its parking brake has not been set, as recommended in FCA US owners’ manuals.

The Company is aware of seven potentially related injuries and a small number of potentially related accidents.

“FCA US will restore BTSI function in the vehicles subject to this recall,” advises Tom Mc Carthy, Head of Safety Compliance and Product Analysis. “Nevertheless, as always, we urge customers to use their parking brakes, as recommended, and to ensure that child occupants are not left unattended.”

Affected are certain 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups; 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs; 2016-2017 Ram 3500 chassis cabs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs. Certain 2009-2017 Ram 1500 pickups are also included in the campaign. Certain 2009-2017 Ram 1500 pickups are also included in the campaign, but heavy-duty trucks represent the majority of the affected vehicles.

All model-year 2017 trucks built after Dec. 31, 2016, are excluded.

Additional populations of these vehicles are also being recalled in Canada (est. 249,520); Mexico (est. 42,747) and certain markets outside the NAFTA region (ext. 14,950).

Affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service. FCA US urges all customers to heed the instructions on recall notices.

Customers with concerns may call FCA US at (866)-220-6747.

Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

January 12, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 153,859 minivans in the U.S. to update certain software.

The Company is aware of a single potentially related accident. FCA US is unaware of any potentially related injuries.

The campaign is limited to model-year 2017 vehicles. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans are unaffected.

Customers will be advised when they may schedule service to install updated engine control software, which will be available – free of charge – from certified FCA US dealers. The Company urges customers to heed the instructions on all recall notices.

Recall Alert : 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUVs

January 26, 2018 —

Chrysler (FCA US) is recalling more than 1,200 model year 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUVs with fuel lines that may separate and cause the vehicles to stall or catch on fire in the engine compartments.

The SUVs are equipped with 6.2-liter supercharged engines and were built October 10 to December 10, 2017.

On December 19, 2017, FCA opened an investigation after a report of possible problems with the fuel lines. Chrysler engineers, working with engineers from supplier Martinrea Intl Inc, analyzed two failed parts and discovered a sensor that was misaligned on a machine that assembled the parts.

Although no reports have been received about crashes, injuries or warranty claims, the automaker decided the safest course of action was to order a recall.

According to Chrysler, 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUVs without 6.2L supercharged engines are not affected by this recall because the problematic parts were assembled by the supplier on a different production line.

The recall is expected to begin March 2, 2018, so dealers can inspect the fuel lines, and if needed, replace those lines.

Owners of the recalled 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawks may call 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number U02.

Recall Alert : RAM 1500 Trucks

303,000 Ram 1500 Trucks Recalled For Sagging Gas Tanks

March 15, 2018 —

Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) is recalling 303,000 Ram 1500 trucks because the gas tanks can sag and possibly fall off due to corroded brackets.

The 2009-2012 Ram 1500 trucks are recalled only in the following states where road salt is typically used:

Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

Chrysler says an internal investigation found that although the brackets can corrode, testing indicates the remaining structural components will help to prevent the fuel tanks from completely falling away.

The Ram 1500 fuel tanks are made of a high-density polyethylene, but any sagging fuel tank is a danger, although FCA says it hasn't received any reports of crashes, fires or incidents where the gas tanks separated from the trucks.

The automaker says about 270,254 trucks are in the U.S., about 26,676 are in Canada, an estimated 1,063 are in Mexico and more than 5,000 trucks are outside North America.

Chrysler says Ram 1500 drivers should pay attention to any straps hanging from the fuel tanks and listen for any noise coming from under the trucks. If you observe these issues or see your gas tank sagging, contact your dealership immediately.

Chrysler didn't say when the recall will begin, but concerned owners should call the automaker at 800-853-1403.

NADA Partners With National Safety Council on Vehicle Recall Campaign

NADA chairman and FCA US LLC dealer Wes Lutz leads efforts to link dealership websites to Check To Protect
Check To Protect gives vehicle owners the ability to find out whether there is an open recall on their car or truck

March 27, 2018 , Las Vegas -

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) joined with the National Safety Council (NSC) in support of its Check To Protect campaign designed to educate the public about the importance of addressing open vehicle recalls.

NADA chairman and FCA US LLC dealer Wes Lutz made the announcement last week at the NADA conference and convention in Las Vegas. He also intends to promote Check To Protect on his dealership websites and during interactions with customers. Lutz encouraged fellow auto dealers to follow his lead by using and promoting CheckToProtect.org as the go-to resource for drivers to learn whether a vehicle has an open recall.

“NADA wholeheartedly supports the National Safety Council's Check To Protect initiative, and is proud to be a partner in its efforts to educate and raise awareness about the importance of getting recall repairs completed,” said Lutz, owner of Extreme Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram dealership located in Jackson, Michigan. "I’m honored to be the first dealer to link directly to the Check To Protect website from my dealership home page, and I’m encouraging all franchised dealers, of every brand, to do so as well.”

The Council said it is grateful for NADA’s support and encourages vehicle owners to go to CheckToProtect.org to review their recall status. Those with an open recall are encouraged to make an appointment with their certified auto dealer today. All recalls are 100 percent free for drivers to have repaired at authorized dealerships regardless of the age of the vehicle.

“For Check To Protect to work on a national level, the National Safety Council knows it needs dealer support,” said Kelly Nantel, vice president of communications and advocacy for the Council. “At the end of the day, dealers are the ones who repair the open recalls and close the loop. This relationship raises awareness about the Check To Protect campaign among dealers, drivers and their communities – all places we want to spread the word.”

The Council launched Check To Protect in June 2017. Since that time, more than 100,000 people have visited CheckToProtect.org to learn whether their vehicle has an open recall. FCA US is a founding partner of Check To Protect.

“Recall awareness and compliance are critically important to road safety,” said Kristen Kreibich, Safety Advocacy, FCA US Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance. “FCA US is proud to be working with NSC to develop Check To Protect.”

About NADA
The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience, NADA was born. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,500 new car and truck dealerships, with both domestic and international franchises.

About the National Safety Council

Founded in 1913 and chartered by Congress, the National Safety Council is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to save lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the road through leadership, research, education and advocacy. NSC advances this mission by partnering with businesses, government agencies, elected officials and the public in areas where we can make the most impact – distracted driving, teen driving, workplace safety, prescription drug overdoses and Safe Communities. Safety+Health magazine, the Council’s flagship publication, is a leading source of occupational safety and health information.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Involved in Two Separate Recalls

Apr 12, 2018

Alfa Romeo Stelvio owners are having to make a lot of trips back to the dealership.

The Italian automaker has announced two more recalls for the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, bringing the grand total to four in as many months. The first recall affects 12,595 units and Alfa Romeo says water can possibly leak into the body control modules and corrode the modules and connectors. If this does occur, the driver may notice a variety of symptoms, including illuminated warning lights, non-functioning windshield wipers, turn signals activating for no reason, a failing horn, and a complete loss of interior lighting.

An internal investigation was first opened in September 2017 by FCA, after the company learned of a warranty claim concerning corrosion on the front wiring harness connector. Another investigation was opened after the automaker found how many electrical functions can fail, along with engineers that water can intrude through the sheetmetal sealant at the A-pillar.

To resolve the issue, dealerships will install additional sealing protection to prevent water from entering the body control modules and connectors. The recall is expected to begin May 18, 2018.

The second recall also affects 12,595 units with corrosion problems, which can cause the liftgates to unintentionally open while driving under 3 mph. An investigation was opened in January after the automaker received a warranty claim with the problem on the tailgate of a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Engineers used hand-held tools and discovered water could leak through faulty seals in the rear liftgate panels. In addition, water also leaked through sealing at the rear tail lights and corroded the wiring harnesses, connectors, and switches.

To resolve the second issue, dealers will install additional protection to prevent water from leaking into the components and wiring. That recall is also expected to begin on May 18.
