Recall Alert : 2018/19

Statement: Brake Performance

August 23, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 154,337 vehicles in the U.S., about one-third of which are in dealer hands, to inspect and bleed their brake systems, as needed.

An investigation by FCA US discovered certain shipments of a supplied brake-system component had not been manufactured to specification and were inadvertently installed on vehicles during spring 2018.

In new vehicles with very low mileage, these components may cause gas bubbles to form in a vehicle’s brake fluid. Brake function would remain in such circumstances, but stopping distances may be increased.

FCA US is unaware of any related injuries or accidents, and the Company’s investigation revealed no customer complaints. However, FCA US urges affected customers to heed the instructions on their recall notices.

The recall affects certain 2018 Dodge Journey CUVs, 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan minivans, 2018-2019 Jeep Compass SUVs and 2019 Jeep Cherokee SUVs.

Customer notification is imminent, however, dealers have been advised which vehicles are affected and are providing service accordingly. Customers with questions or concerns may contact their dealers or call the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 19,066), Mexico (est. 900) and certain markets outside the NAFTA region (est. 35,562).

Recall Alert : 2017-2018 Alfa Romeo

2017-2018 Alfa Romeo

Statement: Software
September 28, 2018 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 34,359 vehicles in the U.S. to update their engine-control software. Of this number, less than one percent may also need new catalytic converters. Service technicians will make the required determination using digital diagnostic equipment.

All required repairs will be performed free of charge.

An investigation by FCA US discovered a specific engine operating condition that occurs naturally, but only rarely, and is imperceptible to the driver, may go unmitigated by existing engine-control software. If this were to happen, a vehicle’s catalytic converter may overheat, possibly leading to engine stall or, in unique circumstances, fire.

FCA US is aware of two potentially related engine-compartment fires. However, the Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

An instrument-panel warning may illuminate if this defect manifests itself. Alternately, the vehicle may experience temporary engine-power loss, while in extreme cases, occupants may observe a burning odor.

Customers who observe any such events should contact their dealers.

The recall is limited to certain 2017-2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia sedans and 2018 Stelvio SUVs. High-performance Quadrifoglio models are unaffected.

Service is available and affected customers will be advised as early as next week to schedule appointments. In the interim, customers with questions or concerns should contact their dealers, or Alfa Romeo Premium Care at 866-932-3881.

The new software will enhance an engine’s capacity to detect and mitigate the operating condition associated with catalyst overheating.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 2,619) and Mexico (est. 90). Affected customers will be advised when they may schedule service.

2018-2019 Jeep Wrangler JL facing recall over frame weld separations

2018-2019 Jeep Wrangler JL facing recall over frame weld separations

Steering response might diminish or disappear entirely. It's a big deal.

October 5, 2018

When a part is welded to a vehicle's frame, it's reasonably expected that said part will remain welded to that vehicle. But when it doesn't, as is the case with certain Jeep Wranglers, it's time for a recall.

Fiat Chrysler is set to issue a voluntary recall for an unspecified number of 2018-2019 Jeep Wrangler JL SUVs. Since many of these vehicles remain on dealership lots, the automaker has issued a stop-sale for affected vehicles still in dealer possession, according to documents posted to the JL Wrangler Forum. These vehicles cannot be sold or delivered until the recall work is completed. A spokesman for Fiat Chrysler confirmed the forthcoming recall, that the number of affected vehicles is "not big" and that no accidents or injuries have been linked to the problem so far.

The issue stems from a part welded to the vehicle's frame. Evidently, some of the recalled Wranglers might have been constructed with an improper weld connecting the front track bar to the frame, which in certain situations could cause the track bar to separate from the frame. If that happens, the vehicle might suffer from diminished (or no) steering response, which greatly increases the risk of an accident. The track bar, sometimes referred to as the Panhard rod, is a rigid bar that connects the vehicle's axle to its frame, preventing unwanted lateral movement of the axle.

At the moment, it is unclear how Jeep plans to remedy the issue. According to Jalopnik, which contacted several owners who reported track-bar issues, at least one owner is in the process of having his vehicle replaced. Whether Fiat Chrysler will attempt to repair some of the affected vehicles, or replace them all entirely, has yet to be confirmed. There's precedence for outright replacement -- after recalling 293 examples of its Ascent SUV for missing B-pillar welds, Subaru offered full replacements for all affected vehicles.

Affected owners will receive notifications via first-class mail. At least some dealerships have already received FCA's recall notice, according to Jalopnik, which was posted to the JL Wrangler Forum earlier on Friday. That notice says that the recall should begin in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Statement: Air-bag Inflators

Statement: Air-bag Inflators
January 10, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 1.4 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace passenger-side air-bag inflators that may, on deployment, send shrapnel into the vehicle cabin.

The Company is unaware of any injuries or accidents associated this vehicle population.

The defect is linked to temperature cycling, humidity and time. This recall is the fourth and final phase of a coordinated schedule established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and developed to capture defective air-bag inflators produced by the former Takata.

To date, FCA US has replaced more than 4 million Takata inflators. However, the Company’s inventory of replacement parts has outpaced demand for service.

“We strongly urge our customers to respond to their recall notices by contacting an authorized Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealer,” said Mark Chernoby, FCA’s Head of North American Safety and Regulatory Compliance. “Recall service is free, we have replacement parts and dealers are ready to help.”

Affected are vehicles in these populations:

2010 Ram 3500 pickup
2010 Ram 4500/5500 chassis cab
2010-2011 Dodge Dakota pickup
2010-2014 Dodge Challenger sport coupe
2011-2015 Dodge Charger sedan
2010-2015 Chrysler 300 sedan
2010-2016 Jeep® Wrangler SUV

Additional vehicles of the same types will be recalled in Canada (est. 88,830), Mexico (12,821) and markets outside the NAFTA region (118,084).

Suspect inflators are not used in any FCA US vehicle currently in production.

The Company will advise affected customers when they may schedule service. Customers with questions or concerns may call the FCA US Recall Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Fiat Chrysler recalls pickups; power steering can fail
Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 182,000 pickup trucks worldwide to fix an electrical problem that can knock out the power steering

01/25/2019

Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 182,000 pickup trucks worldwide to fix an electrical problem that can knock out the power steering.

The recall covers Ram 1500 pickups from the 2019 model year. Most are in the U.S. and Canada, and one-third are still on dealer lots.

The company said Friday a fastener that grounds the battery wasn't secured properly in manufacturing. The connection can become loose, which disables the power steering. Drivers can still steer but the effort it takes wouldn't be consistent.

FCA says it has no reports of crashes or injuries.

Dealers will secure the fastener at no cost to owners. Fiat Chrysler says it doesn't have a date for the recall to begin, but it under U.S. law it has to start within 60 days.

Statement: Ground fasteners
January 25, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 159,740 U.S.-market vehicles, nearly one-third of which are still in dealer hands, to tighten a fastener linked to reports of power-steering loss.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

An FCA US investigation discovered certain vehicles produced before Oct. 25, 2018, may have a battery ground-circuit fastener that was not secured properly. Accordingly, the connection may become loose enough to intermittently create an open circuit.

Should such a condition occur, the vehicle would retain steering capability. However, it could lead to inconsistent steering feedback, which may contribute to oversteer or understeer, increasing the risk of crash.

Affected are certain 2019 Ram 1500 pickups. Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 18,682), Mexico (est. 407) and a few markets outside the NAFTA region (est. 3.409).

Customers with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

Recall: Steering Linkage

Statement: Steering Linkage

February 5, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 573,876 heavy-duty trucks in the U.S. to address a potential steering-linkage issue.

An FCA US investigation discovered a specific steering-linkage configuration on certain vehicles may separate over time. If this were to occur, the driver may experience steering loss.

The Company is aware of one potentially related injury and eight potentially related accidents.

The recall population is limited to model-year 2013-2017 Ram 3500 pickups and model-year 2014-2017 Ram 2500 pickups and 3500 chassis cabs.

Customers will be advised when they may schedule service. Those with questions or concerns may use online search engines such as the one at recalls.mopar.com to determine if their vehicles are in the recall population. Alternately, they may contact their dealers or call the FCA US Recall Information Center at (800) 853-1403.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 62,734), Mexico (est. 17,682) and certain markets outside the NAFTA region (est. 5,837).
