Statement: 12-volt battery connection


June 10, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 27,634 vehicles globally, to address a 12-volt battery connection that may pose fire risk.

Twelve-volt battery systems provide power to auxiliary features, such as radios and remote-control garage-door openers.

The Company is aware of a small number of related fires. All occurred in Canada, but for one in Minnesota.

FCA is aware of one minor injury.

The recall is limited to model-year 2017-2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans. However, neither the model’s high-voltage battery, nor its electrified propulsion system, is associated with the defect.

Gasoline-powered Pacifica minivans are unaffected.

FCA will begin mailing notices to affected customers during the week of June 22.

In the interim, FCA recommends – out of an abundance of caution – that customers avoid parking their vehicles inside buildings or structures. In addition, FCA advises customers not to park near other vehicles, or place wet items or liquids that may spill in the second-row seating area.

Initially, the recall notices will advise customers to have their vehicles inspected by a dealer. If the 12-volt connection shows no evidence of corrosion, the vehicle will be released to the customer – after the connection is tightened.

If there is evidence of corrosion, the dealer will hold the vehicle and the customer will be provided with a free loaner.

Subject to the results of ongoing tests by FCA, all affected customers may receive a second notice to schedule additional dealer service. Vehicles held by dealers will be remedied accordingly and then returned to their owners.

However, as soon as June 16, customers may enter their VINs at recalls.mopar.com to determine if a vehicle is covered by the recall. Any vehicle subject to this campaign may then be brought to a dealer for inspection, even if customers have not received an official recall notification.

Canadian customers may also check their VINs at rappels.mopar.ca or recalls.mopar.ca.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2020 Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles ("PHEV"). The 12 volt isolator post located behind the driver's seat may develop high resistance.

Remedy

The recall remedy is currently under development. FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform an interim inspection of this joint. If the inspection indicates the joint is compromised, owners will receive a loaner vehicle, until a final remedy is developed. Interim notifications are expected to begin around June 22, 2020. Note: Consumers are advised to exercise the following precautions until the vehicle has the final repair completed: do not park these vehicles inside of buildings or structures, or near other vehicles. Statement: Software update


June 18, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA is voluntarily recalling 67,248 U.S.-market vehicles to update certain transmission software.

A review of customer data prompted an FCA investigation that discovered a driveline connection may, in certain circumstances, slip. Should this occur, it may lead to loss of propulsion and prevent the transmission from engaging PARK when the vehicle is stationary.

FCA is aware of a single related accident, but no injuries.

Should the above driveline failure occur, a warning lamp will illuminate in the vehicle’s instrument cluster and the updated software will deliver propulsion by engaging rear-wheel-drive, as needed. And should PARK not engage as intended, the software will also help secure the vehicle by automatically applying its parking brake.

The recall is limited to model-year 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee SUVs equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Vehicles with a single-speed PTU are not affected.

FCA will begin mailing recall notices next month. Until then, customers are reminded to use their parking brakes, as recommended in their owners’ manuals.

Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 13,659), Mexico (est. 716), and certain markets outside North America (est. 9,940).

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced on Thursday the recall of certain Jeep Cherokee SUVs for a transmission issue that could lead to the vehicle rolling away when it is supposed to be in "park."

A driveline connection may slip and lead to a loss of a power. The affected car won't be able to go, and it won't be able to park. This could increase the risk of vehicle roll-away. This is not related to the widespread FCA recall of 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles, which was attributed to a confusing new gear shift design.
The current recall affects 67,248 Jeep Cherokees from model year 2014-2017, though FCA is aware of only a single incident that resulted in no injuries. Only Cherokees equipped with a two-speed power transfer case on 4x4 models are being recalled. Vehicles with a single-speed power transfer unit are not affected.

The fix is to update the transmission software, which has to be done at a dealer. The software update will alert the driver of the potential error with a warning light in the cluster, then the vehicle will shift power to the rear wheels to maintain propulsion, according to Autoblog. If "park" is not engaged, the software update will automatically apply the parking brake. Until the recall is complete, FCA recommends affected owners use their parking brakes.
The recall begins next month and will be completed at service centers free of charge. Customers can call 1-800-853-1403 or visit FCA's recall website.

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

Remedy

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. Fiat Chrysler planning for big recall on engine used in Jeeps

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is preparing for a possible recall related to an issue affecting upward of one million vehicles, likely including Jeep SUV models, equipped with its 2.4-liter Tigershark engine.

The expected recall is related to emissions testing conducted on the gasoline engine and, according to the company, is not connected to claims summed up in various lawsuits that the engines burn excessive amounts of oil, which could cause stalling. It's not known how soon the recall could happen.

"In connection with internal testing, we determined that approximately 1 million vehicles equipped with the 2.4L Tigershark engine may have excess tailpipe emissions," FCA said in a recent regulatory filing.

The extent of pollution from the Tigershark emissions was not clear. FCA said it has been in contact with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board about the situation.

"FCA has been working closely with EPA and CARB, and we continue to do so, on a group of vehicles equipped with Tigershark engines. As this population ages, some vehicles exceed in-use emission requirements, depending on drive cycle and mileage. We are conducting test programs to define a remedy, which also requires approval by the agencies. Affected customers will be advised when service becomes available, and will be provided free of charge. This is not a safety issue and there are no enforcement actions," according to a company statement provided by spokesman Eric Mayne.

The EPA, through spokesperson Enesta Jones, responded to an email from the Free Press by saying that FCA is doing a voluntary recall based on in-use testing done by EPA. The agency released a report last year highlighting its increasing efforts to monitor vehicle emissions, noting that 86 recalls, affecting more than 4.9 million light-duty vehicles, were conducted in 2017.

The Tigershark issue, according to FCA, is not connected to the company's diesel emissions troubles , which have echoes of but apparently not the scope of Volkswagen's Dieselgate. FCA and German supplier Bosch agreed to a civil settlement last year, which called for the owners of about 100,000 2014-16 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500s — the vehicles at issue — to get payments of about $3,000 each. FCA denied wrongdoing, although prosecutors accused the company of installing so-called defeat devices on the vehicles to cheat emissions tests. An FCA manager later placed on leave, Emanuele Palma, has been indicted, and FCA said in the regulatory filing it is in talks with both the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Justice Department's Criminal Division, which are investigating.

The Tigershark emissions issue was referenced in the same regulatory filing, which also highlighted oil consumption complaints. Those complaints have led to class-action lawsuits against the company in California and Michigan related to the engine, which, FCA said, has been installed in about 1.6 million vehicles sold in the United States. FCA, through its spokesman, said it doesn't discuss ongoing litigation but that if customers have concerns they can contact their dealers.

One of the lawsuits, filed in U.S. District Court in May in Detroit, said the engine was installed in six models, the 2014-20 Jeep Cherokee, 2017-20 Jeep Compass, 2015-20 Jeep Renegade, 2015-16 Chrysler 200, 2013-16 Dodge Dart and the 2016-20 Fiat 500X.

Kyle Davis of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is one of the plaintiffs. He bought a 2015 Dodge Dart, which he still owns, from Carvana in April 2018.

Davis replaced the spark plugs after less than 800 miles because the car kept shutting down, and he followed the suggested maintenance schedule for oil changes, the suit said.

"When plaintiff checked the oil he noticed the dipstick was completely dry and had to use three quarts of oil to fill (the car). In November 2019, plaintiff was driving 60 miles per hour on the freeway when the affected vehicle shut down on him without warning. This was particularly dangerous because the other vehicles on the freeway also had no warning that the affected vehicle would suddenly slow down," according to the suit.

Davis took the car for engine repairs to an FCA dealership, which did not give him a loaner. It took four weeks and $4,000 before Davis got his car back, and it still uses oil at an "abnormally high pace," the suit said.

Hundreds of owners have reported their vehicles shutting down without warning because of low oil levels or pressure, but the company describes it as normal in its technical service bulletins, the suit said.

”Moreover, the sudden shut-offs caused by the oil consumption defect could be avoided if FCA’s oil indicator system alerted drivers of the class vehicles that their engine oil was running low. But it does not. And this ‘oil indicator’ defect means that drivers of the class vehicles only become aware of a dangerously low engine-oil level after it causes an engine stall or shut-down, putting their lives at risk," the suit said.

Statement: Powertrain Control Module Software


August 21, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 58,016 vehicles in the U.S. to update certain powertrain software that will help prevent engine stall.

An FCA investigation discovered the tone wheel in a small percentage of engines may, over time, lose magnetic material. Should this occur, it may disrupt signal transmission to a sensor that monitors crankshaft position – a condition that may contribute to engine stall.

FCA is unaware of any related injuries or accidents. However, the Company urges customers to follow the instructions on their recall notices; mailing will begin no later than Oct. 1.

Customers with additional questions or concerns may contact their dealers or call (800) 853-1403.

The recall is limited to certain model-year 2014-2019 Ram 1500 Classic pickup trucks and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines. Service will be provided free of charge.

Like-model vehicles equipped with gasoline engines are not subject to this recall. And vehicles equipped with FCA’s newer, third-generation 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 are similarly unaffected.


Additional vehicles will be subject to recall in Canada (est. 22,079) and certain markets outside North America (est. 51,879), a population that also includes model-year 2014-2019 Chrysler 300 full-size sedans equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines.

Statement: Floor mats


August 28, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 186,233 pickup trucks, globally, because their adjustable pedals may be positioned in a location that affords insufficient clearance with all-weather floor mats.

FCA is unaware of any related accidents or injuries. These and all FCA vehicles are equipped with brake-throttle override, which enables continuous brake-pedal application to automatically overcome simultaneous accelerator-pedal application.

Affected customers will receive recall notices. In the interim, FCA advises those who ordered all-weather mats as a factory-installed item, to contact their dealers, who will modify the mats pending replacement with a new design.

An estimated one percent of the recall population may exhibit this issue. Should customers observe insufficient accelerator-pedal clearance, or they are unable to visit their dealers in a timely fashion, FCA recommends they remove their all-weather floor mats until they obtain service.

This recall follows an FCA investigation launched after a customer reported a floor mat interfered with the accelerator pedal while driving. The customer used brake-throttle override to safely stop the vehicle.

Introduced to FCA’s lineup in 2003, brake-throttle override has been standard equipment on all FCA vehicles since 2011.

The recall is limited to certain model-year 2019-2020 Ram 1500 pickups equipped with adjustable pedals. Recall notices will advise customers to bring in their floor mats for modification, pending exchange for new mats with an improved design.

The campaign covers an estimated 160,229 vehicles in the U.S. and additional vehicles in Canada (est. 21,937), Mexico (est. 872) and certain markets outside North America (3,195).

Also subject to recall are an estimated 43,148 all-weather floor mats sold as aftermarket equipment. Affected customers will be advised to bring their mats to a dealer for modification, pending replacement.

In the interim, these customers may also contact their dealers if they have concerns.

September 9, 2020 — More than 34,400 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks are recalled if equipped with Cummins 6.7L High Output engines.


Chrysler says the powertrain control modules may have engine calibration software that does not provide adequate engine warm up protection.


The 2019-2020 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks lack warmup protection that leads to a lack of oil film on the engine connecting rod bearings while the engines reach operating temperatures.


This may cause failures of the connecting rods which could puncture the Cummins engine blocks.


The Cummins 6.7L High Output engine blocks may leak oil that contacts hot engine or exhaust components which results in fires.


More than 32,300 Ram trucks are recalled in the U.S., and more than 2,100 trucks are recalled in Canada.


The Ram recall is expected to begin October 16, 2020. Ram dealerships will flash the engine calibration software to improve the engine warm up protection.

September 10, 2020 — A Dodge Charger Pursuit recall has been issued for more than 27,000 police cars because of problems with the rearview camera images.


The 2018-2020 Dodge Charger Pursuit cars each have a "stealth mode," and in stealth mode the backup camera rearview image will fail to display when the Charger is in REVERSE.


Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) says this is a violation of federal safety standards.


Federal safety standards require the rearview camera system default to a visible rearview image being visible each time the driver backs up. This must occur regardless of any modifications to the field of view the driver had previously selected.


The Chargers fail to perform this task in stealth mode due to problems with the body control module software, leaving drivers unable to view rearview images while backing up.


More than 26,300 Dodge Charger Pursuits are recalled in the U.S. and 831 police cars are recalled in Canada.


Chrysler says to fix the problem, dealerships will update the body control module software to disable stealth modes when the Dodge Charger Pursuits are shifted into REVERSE.


The Dodge Charger Pursuit recall is expected to begin October 16, 2020, but customers may call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number W62.

Mirror Glass Detaches From Ram 1500 and 2500 Trucks

October 24, 2020 — Ram 1500 and Ram 2500 trucks are recalled because the driver's side mirror glass may detach from the backing plates.


More than 21,700 model year 2020 Ram 1500 and 2500 trucks are included in the U.S. and Canadian recalls.


Chrysler opened an investigation into the Ram trucks in August and in September engineers determined the driver-side mirror assemblies had glass not properly adhered to the mirror backing plates.


Federal safety standards dictate each passenger vehicle of "4,536 kg or less shall have either (a) Mirrors that conform to the requirements of S5.; or (b) Outside mirrors of unit magnification, each with not less than 126 cm2 of reflective surface."


If the rearview mirror glass detaches, there is no reflective surface, a violation of safety standards.


There are more than 19,000 recalled Ram trucks in the U.S. and another 2,660 trucks are recalled in Canada.


The Ram 1500 and 2500 mirror recall will begin November 27, 2020. Dealerships will replace the driver's side mirror glass, but concerned truck owners may call 800-853-1403.


Chrysler's recall number is W70.


Separately, Chrysler is recalling nearly 4,800 Mopar Outside Foldaway Heated Power Left Mirrors, part number 68147863AS and mirror replacement glass, part number 68050299AA.


The recall is associated with the above Ram recall for mirror glass that detaches.


Chrysler will notify owners November 27, 2020, and dealers will replace the driver-side mirror or, if already installed, replace the mirror glass.

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2020 Ram 2500 and 1500 vehicles. The driver side mirror glass can detach from the backing plate and no longer provide a reflective surface. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Remedy

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side mirror glass, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 27, 2020. Owners may contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W70.

The transmission shifter cable may separate and disconnect from the transmission, causing the vehicle to not perform shifts intended by the driver and the gear shift lever position not matching the actual transmission gear.

Remedy

Ram 1500 EGR Cooler Recall Allegedly Failed

Ram 1500 class action lawsuit alleges EGR cooler recall failed, causing trucks to catch fire.

October 29, 2020 — A Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall allegedly failed to help customers of 2014–2019 Ram 1500 and Ram 1500 Classic trucks equipped with 3.0L EcoDiesel engines.


The Ram 1500 exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler lawsuit alleges Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) sold hundreds of thousands of the trucks between June 12, 2013, to October 23, 2019.


According to the class action lawsuit, the EGR coolers are prone to thermal fatigue which may cause the coolers to crack internally over time.


"An EGR cooler with an internal crack will introduce preheated, vaporized coolant to the EGR system while the engine is running. In certain circumstances, this mixture interacts with other hydrocarbons and air in the system, potentially resulting in combustion within the intake manifold, which may lead to a vehicle fire.” - Ram lawsuit
The trucks will suddenly lose power and possibly catch fire, which is what occurred to a plaintiff who sued.

EGR Cooler Recall Filled with Delays and Failures

A Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall was announced in October 2019 for 107,898 model year 2014-2019 Ram 1500 trucks in the U.S. However, the plaintiffs claim the automaker made a number of misrepresentations that caused truck customers to park their vehicles.


According to the EGR cooler lawsuit, when Chrysler announced the recall the automaker told truck customers, “the remedy for this condition is not currently available” but that the company was “making every effort to finalize the remedy as quickly as possible . . .


Affected Ram 1500 recall customers were told they would be notified when a fix was available, something the plaintiffs say created the expectation a fix would soon be available.


In the interim, Ram 1500 customers were told to monitor their coolant levels and contact dealers if the levels were consistently low. The plaintiffs claim this created the impression that monitoring the problem would prevent the known dangers.

Replacement parts are consistently unavailable

The plaintiffs also claim Ram owners take their trucks to dealers for repairs based on Chrysler's recall notice, but dealers allegedly routinely say repair parts aren't available. Adding to the insult is how dealers are allegedly told replacement parts are very limited and the EGR cooler should be replaced only if the part has failed.


The automaker allegedly concealed the EGR cooler defect, led customers to believe a fix was near, told customers a fix was available and then turned away Ram 1500 owners and lessees when they tried to have their trucks repaired.


A plaintiff who sued says he purchased a used 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel for his construction business in August 2019. The plaintiff received a Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall notice in October or November 2019, but the notice said there was no fix available. The Ram owner was told to monitor the coolant levels and contact a dealer if the levels were low.


The plaintiff says he tried to have the EGR cooler fixed by a dealer but the dealer didn't have replacement coolers.


About seven months later the plaintiff was driving the Ram when it filled with smoke and lost all power. Five occupants were able to exit the truck before several explosions occurred and the Ram 1500 was engulfed in flames until the fire was extinguished by the fire department. (Photo above)


Two days later the plaintiff went back to the dealership and let them know about the fire. The Ram 1500 owner was allegedly told technicians could only fix one EGR cooler per week and his truck was number 20 on the waiting list.


According to the lawsuit, this means his truck wouldn't have received the EGR cooler until the second week of December 2020.


The Ram 1500 EGR cooler recall lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin: Anderson, et al., v. FCA US LLC.


The plaintiffs are represented by Turke & Strauss LLP, and Robins Kaplan LLP.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front lower control arms and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2020. Owners may contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W81. Note: Owners are advised to not drive their vehicles until they have been inspected and repaired if needed.

Jeep Cherokee (KL Series) recalled due to fault in the power transfer unit

According to the manufacturer, the differential gear splines inside the power transfer unit could fail.

Fiat Chrysler Australia has issued a recall on a total of 2609 examples of the Jeep Cherokee (KL Series), citing a potential fault with the power transfer unit.
The affected cars have model years from 2014 to 2017, and were sold between June 2013 and June 2018.
The recall notice, lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says “the differential gear splines inside the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) may fail.”
“Wear on the PTU splines can cause a loss of power while the vehicle is moving and the loss of the PARK function while stationary,” it continues.
“A loss of power or 'park' function increases the risk of an accident and serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Jeep Cherokees Recalled For Steering Issues

Chrysler recalled about 700 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and Jeep Cherokee Limited SUVs.

November 18, 2020 — Chrysler has recalled model year 2021 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and Jeep Cherokee Limited SUVs because the front lower control arms may fracture.


Chrysler warns drivers to park their Cherokees until the SUVs are repaired.


A front lower control arm fracture while driving may cause a loss of steering control.


The U.S. Jeep recall includes nearly 700 Cherokees, and about 14 Jeeps are recalled in Canada.


Jeep dealerships will replace any affected front lower control arms.


The Jeep Cherokee recall began October 30, 2020, but concerned drivers may call 800-853-1403 and ask about recall number W81.

Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR Cooler Recall For Fires

Chrysler recalls more than 34,000 Grand Cherokees after EGR coolers cause coolant leaks.

November 21, 2020 — A Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR cooler recall has been issued for 34,334 model year 2014-2019 SUVs equipped with 3-liter EcoDiesel engines.


The exhaust gas recirculation coolers may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR systems. This can occur while the engines are running, and combustion inside the intake manifolds can cause fires.


Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) didn't report how many engine compartment fires are blamed on the EGR coolers. But Chrysler says since October 26 there have been "119 customer assistance records, 6 field reports, and 1,478 warranty claims."


The automaker opened an internal investigation in September due to an increasing trend of engine compartment fires coming from the Jeep Grand Cherokee intake manifolds.


Pressure testing on a Canadian Grand Cherokee following a fire showed a leak in the step tube of the cooler, and diesel engineers confirmed the engine compartment fires were caused by EGR cooler leaks.


Engineers determined the EGR coolers can crack from "thermal fatigue," but Chrysler says it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the EGR coolers.


FCA says production of the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokees began in December 2012 and ended in January 2019 based on 3.0L EcoDiesel engine assembly records.


A Grand Cherokee driver may notice coolant is missing but won't see leaked coolant on the ground, the heater may not work properly and a warning light may illuminate.


The U.S. Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR cooler recall includes 28,884 SUVs and a recall in Canada involves 5,450 Grand Cherokees.


Owners of 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokees may be eligible for reimbursements if they paid for EGR cooler replacements.


Jeep dealerships will replace the Grand Cherokee EGR coolers with new coolers which FCA says are not prone to thermal fatigue and cracks. It's also possible the intake manifolds may be replaced.


The Jeep Grand Cherokee EGR recall will begin December 31, 2020. Grand Cherokee owners may contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask about reference number W79.
