Chrysler Ignition Switches Are Investigated

06/18/2014

Concern over the safety of ignition switches in vehicles is spreading beyond General Motors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating about 1.2 million Chrysler minivans and sport utility vehicles over a concern that jostling the ignition key could accidentally turn off the engine and disable the air bags.

The issue appears similar to the defect that has thrown General Motors into turmoil and forced it to recall millions of vehicles for a defect the that automaker has admitted is linked to at least 13 deaths.

The Chrysler action — pertaining to Jeep Commanders and Grand Cherokees; Grand Caravan and Town and Country minivans; and Journey sport utility vehicles — comprises two investigations.

The first covers about 525,000 Jeep Commanders from the 2006 and 2007 model years, and Jeep Grand Cherokees from the 2005 and 2006 model years, according to a report published Wednesday on the agency’s website.

The agency says it has received at least 32 complaints from the Jeep owners say that the driver’s knee hit the ignition key.

“This causes the engine to shut off, affects power steering and brakes and may potentially result in the vehicle’s air bags not deploying during a frontal crash,” the report said.

Some of those complaints were filed with the safety agency at least six years ago.

“This has happened four times now,” wrote one owner in a complaint filed in June 2008. “I was driving my one-year-old son to the babysitter’s house. My knee bumped the key as I was approaching a turn, shutting off the vehicle/power steering. So, I kept going straight and nearly crashes. Luckily I slammed the brakes and stopped just in time.”

The second action covers about 700,000 Grand Caravan, Town and Country minivans and the Journey sport utility vehicles from the 2008 to 2010 model years, according to a report by the agency also posted Wednesday.

This investigation relates to a 2011 Chrysler recall of about 248,000 2010 Grand Caravans, Town and Country minivans and Journeys for an ignition-key problem that could also result in the engine’s being inadvertently turned off. That action also included about 12,000 Volkswagen Routan models from 2010 that were built by Chrysler.

But the safety regulators say they have received 23 complaints about ignition-key problems from owners of 2008 — 10 versions of those models that were not recalled and a few who said they have the recall fix and the problem occurred again. So, it is investigating whether the automaker should be required to expand the recall.

Chrysler could not immediately be reached for comment.

VW recalling 18,500 minivans for ignition problems

Washington — Volkswagen AG is recalling 18,500 2009 Routan minivans because the ignition key can move to the “off” or “accessory” position under rough road conditions, causing the vehicle to potentially stall and the airbags to fail in the event of the crash.

VW is the latest automaker to recall vehicles for ignition problems since General Motors Co. has recalled more than 17 million vehicles this year worldwide for ignition problems. Chrysler Group LLC — a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV — built the Routan for VW — largely a rebadged Chrysler Town and Country/Dodge Grand Caravan — and informed VW of the need for the recall.

VW will modify the ignition switch and begin the recall this month.

In late June, Chrysler said it would recall nearly 696,000 minivans and SUVs worldwide under government pressure because ignition keys could rotate out of the "on" position, potentially causing stalling and the air bag not to deploy in a front-end crash. Chrysler said it was expand a 2011 recall — that also covered some Routan vehicles — to cover the 2009 Dodge Journey and 2008-09 Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country "for inadvertent ignition key rotation from the run position to the accessory position."

VW has now recalled about 31,000 vehicles since 2011 for the issue.

Chrysler said it was fixing the vehicles by installing a more robust ignition module detent ring.

Chrysler said it had about 30 customer complaints and 465 warranty claims alleging inadvertent engine shut-off while driving — and reports of two rear-end collisions arising from the condition. There are no reports of deaths or injuries from air bags failing to deploy in crashes linked to the defect.

Chrysler disclosed that on June 17, NHTSA asked the automaker in a phone call to recall the 2008-09 vehicles. But the automaker is standing by its recall remedy — adding a detent ring to the switch to make it stiffer, instead of replacing the entire part — even though NHTSA has concerns it may not work.

Chrysler has now recalled about 1.7 million vehicles for ignition switch problems since 2011. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still is investigating whether Chrysler's fix is adequate in most of the recalled vehicles. In July, Chrysler also said was recalling nearly 800,000 older Jeep SUVs for ignition switch problems, and is urging owners to only use the ignition key as the automaker works to find a fix.

The company said the recall covers some 2006-07 Jeep Commander and 2005-07 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, and said its engineers are seeking a remedy. "Chrysler is committing now to conduct a recall out of an abundance of caution," the company said.

Chrysler advised owners to make sure there is enough clearance between their knees and the keys so that the key doesn't get bumped and accidentally turn off the engine. As a further precaution, owners are advised to remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key.

The problem is similar to the issue that has rocked cross-town rival General Motors Co. after it failed to promptly recall 2.6 million cars linked to at least 13 deaths when air bags failed to deploy after vehicles stalled. GM has recalled about 15 million other vehicles for other ignition problems this year.

In an interview in July, acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman said the agency is looking more broadly at the issue of whether other automakers have ignition issues: "This whole GM Cobalt recall brought to light a whole set of new information about interactions between ignition switches and air bags. We quickly jumped on that new information ... We're still in that process."

The Commander and Grand Cherokee have a different ignition switch — an instrument panel mounted switch — compared to column ignition switches in the minivans.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will modify the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1- 800-822-8987. Volkswagens number for this recall is 28G1/U8. Note: This campaign is an expansion of NHTSA Recall No. 11V-151.

DETROIT (AP) — Stellantis is recalling more than 266,000 pickup trucks mainly in North America because the side air bags can explode without warning and hurl shrapnel into the cabin.
It's the second major recall of pickup trucks in the past two months for the same problem.
Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler, says the recall covers covers certain Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy duty pickups from the 2015 through 2020 model years. Also included are some previous generation Ram 1500 pickups known as the Classic, from 2015 through 2020. The latest version of the Ram 1500 is not affected.
Stellantis says in a statement Friday that the air bag inflators in the pickups were contaminated with moisture during a supplier's manufacturing process. Metal canisters holding the inflator can rupture, even if the air bags are not deployed in a crash.

One inflator ruptured, but Stellantis says there have been no injuries.
The company says it will notify customers when they can schedule service. Owners with fears or questions can call (800)-853-1403.
Last month General Motors recalled more than 400,000 pickups in the U.S. for the same problem.
Documents filed in the GM recall said the inflators were made in Mexico by Joyson Safety Systems, the company that purchased the assets of bankrupt air bag maker Takata.
Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. But the chemical can become more volatile over time when exposed to moisture in the air. The explosion can blow apart a metal canister and spew shrapnel.
Stellantis said Friday that the air bags in the Ram recall do not contain ammonium nitrate.
Takata air bags caused the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history, with at least 63 million inflators recalled. The U.S. government says that as of last year, more than 11.1 million had not been fixed. About 100 million inflators have been recalled worldwide.

Dodge Announces Three New Theft Protection Measures
By DodgeGarage 8/12/2021 9:21 PM Showcase 6 min read
ChallengerChargerSRT

Dodge has developed three new security measures to help protect owners from having their vehicles stolen by thieves. This includes the Enhanced Security Mode, Key Programming Lockdown and the Intrusion Module.
The Enhanced Security Mode allows the owner to enter a 4-digit code to limit engine output to less than 3 horsepower, and it will be available Monday for the 2021 model year Challengers and Chargers. Key Programming Lockdown prevents thieves from programming new keys and it will be available for 2020 and 2021 models as early as October, but the company is committed to having the system in action by January 2022. After the 2020 and 2021 models are handled, Dodge will roll out the same software for 2015 through 2019 model years, with a new year being added every six weeks. As for the Intrusion Module, it senses glass breakage, movement inside the vehicle and vehicle inclination, sounding the alarm if there are any changes. It will be offered for the 2022 model year, standard in cars with the 392 and SRT® Hellcat HEMI® engines and available in V6 and 5.7-liter-powered models.

For those who don’t want to wait for those updated security measures, Mopar® currently offers the Electronic Vehicle Tracking System, which can be purchased and installed into any modern Dodge vehicle.

Challenger and Charger Theft
If you drive a Dodge Challenger or Charger, you have likely read an article about how the modern Mopar muscle cars have become popular targets of thieves. Some reports have glorified it enough to sound like these are the only vehicles being stolen, when in reality, it is less than two tenths of a percent of all thefts annually. Since 2016, there have been around 6,000 Challengers and Chargers stolen in the United States and while that might sound high, during that same 5-year period, roughly 3.75-million vehicles were stolen across America, as thieves take advantage of vehicles with keyless entry and push-button starting systems.

Although the Challenger and Charger account for less than two tenths of a percent of vehicles stolen over the past 5 years in the United States, the amount of media coverage for models with catchy automotive terms such as “Scat Pack” and “Hellcat” have led to an inordinate number of articles being written about these particular Dodge vehicles being stolen. Naturally, this has created a great deal of anxiety for many modern Mopar muscle car owners, but it has also put pressure on the folks from Dodge to help further protect against vehicle theft.
In seeing the concern from owners, Dodge went to work to devise a series of solutions to help protect your Challenger or Charger from being stolen. We recently had a chance to speak with the Dodge Brand, who shared the details on the new security measures for the modern Mopar muscle cars.

How Thieves Steal a Modern Dodge
The Dodge Challenger, Charger and every other modern vehicle with keyless entry and push-button start relies on a key fob system. The key fob communicates via radio frequency with the vehicle whenever you push a button, but it also emits a constant signal that lets the car know that it is near or inside.
Unfortunately, after smashing a window to gain access to the vehicle and its electrical system, thieves use a gadget to program a new key fob. Once this happens, they can unlock the doors, start the car and drive away as though they have your key.

To battle this issue and other forms of theft, Dodge has come up with a trio of solutions for the Challenger and Charger to help stop car thieves in their tracks.

Enhanced Security Mode
Earlier this year, the Dodge brand announced plans to launch the Enhanced Security Mode, which replaces the standard Valet Mode. When engaged with a 4-digit code in the radio head unit, this software keeps the engine at idle speed, limiting the output to just 2.8 horsepower. With less than 3 horsepower, thieves won’t be able to take off with the car even if they have a key.

This solution will officially become available on Monday, August 16 for the 2021 Challengers and Chargers with either the 392-cubic inch or supercharged SRT Hellcat HEMI engines. The Enhanced Security Mode is installed by a simple dealer reflash and it is free to owners. This is also reversible, in case you decide that you want the original Valet Mode back.

This measure prevents a thief from making a speedy getaway in your car, but it doesn’t stop them in their tracks. That is why Dodge has developed two other, more aggressive options for Challenger and Charger owners who want to make sure that no one creates a new key in an effort to steal their beloved Mopar muscle car.

Key Programming Lockdown
As mentioned above, the high tech thieves access the vehicle’s electrical system to program a new key. To put a stop to this, Dodge has developed the Key Programming Lockdown. As the name suggests, this locks the in-car portion of the key system, preventing thieves from creating a new key fob while allowing owners to retain all normal functions, which sounds like the perfect means of making these cars more secure.

There is only one downside to the Key Programming Lockdown. The same process is also what the dealership uses to make new keys for your Challenger or Charger, so if you have the lockdown performed, you will no longer be able to have a new key made unless you buy a new module. The module lists for $159, so if you lose all of your keys, you will need to buy new keys and a new module before having the key reprogrammed.
Dodge is aware that not being able to reprogram new keys can prove to be a headache down the road, so when owners take their Challenger or Charger in to have this software installed via a reflash of the computer system, they can also opt to have up to 2 keys made at a discounted rate.

The company is committed to having the Key Programming Lockdown available by January 2022, but the brand explained that they are targeting October 2021 for the initial rollout. At first, this solution will only be offered for 2020 and 2021 model year vehicles, but after the initial rollout, Dodge plans to release the software update approximately every six weeks to support an additional model year. This will continue back to the 2015 model year and it will be available for all Challengers and Chargers, regardless of the engine.

Finally, while this solution is currently being developed for the Challenger and Charger, the Dodge team recognizes the demand for increased security for Durango owners. The company plans to announce the Key Programming Lockdown for the roomy SUV in the near future.

Intrusion Module
The last new security system that Dodge has developed is the Intrusion Module, which will be offered for the 2022 model year Challenger and Charger. Standard on Scat Pack and SRT Hellcat models while being optional on SXT, GT and R/T models, the Intrusion Module will detect a window being broken or anything moving inside the vehicle while also incorporating an inclination sensor. If someone breaks a window, reaches in through an open window or tries to tow the car away, the alarm is activated in a similar fashion to many popular aftermarket alarm systems.

This measure can be deactivated via the radio head unit in the event that you park the car with people inside, or if you are hauling your Challenger or Charger somewhere in a trailer.

When you pair the Intrusion Module with the Key Programming Lockdown, thieves will not be able to create a new key, nor will they be able to break in or tow away a Dodge Challenger or Charger without the alarm blaring.
In summary, if you have a 2021 Challenger or Charger, you can upgrade to the Enhanced Security Mode starting on Monday. If you have a 2020 or 2021 model, you could be able to add the Key Programming Lockdown system as soon as October and if you own one of the muscle cars from 2015 through 2019, that system could be available early next year. If you buy a 2022 model, it will come with the Intrusion Module as either a standard or optional feature.

Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System
If you want a tighter security system right away, Mopar offers their Electronic Vehicle Tracking System or EVTS. This system costs $495 and offers far more elaborate tracking services than the standard UConnect® Guardian system. It cannot be disabled through the UConnect system and it includes features like geofencing, so you can monitor your vehicle’s movement when someone else is driving it. This system doesn’t prevent someone from stealing your Dodge, but if it does disappear, the Mopar EVTS provides live tracking services through Guidepoint Systems.

The Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System isn’t model-specific, so you can have it installed and keep tabs on any modern Dodge vehicle.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L Recall: Rearview Camera Image Failures

Chrysler recalls 58,000 model year 2021 Grand Cherokee L SUVs due to radio software errors.

Speedometer Vehicle Car Gear shift Motor vehicle

September 26, 2021 — A 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L recall includes more than 58,000 Jeeps because the rearview camera images may not appear on the screens.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) says a radio software error can cause the problem, which is a violation of federal safety standards.

The U.S. 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L recall includes more than 56,000 vehicles, and a recall in Canada involves more than 2,000 Jeeps.

Federal standards require the rear visibility system default to the rearview image at the beginning of each backup event.

The image is supposed to show on the screen regardless of any modifications to the field of view the driver previously selected.

The software errors are in the Harman radios which can malfunction when the Grand Cherokee L shuts down. This prevents the rearview image from appearing when the Jeep is started again.

The Jeeps were built between December 3, 2020, to September 13, 2021.

It will be obvious if the problem occurs because a driver will see no rearview image when they start the Grand Cherokee L.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L recall notices will be mailed November 10, 2021, then Chrysler dealers will update the radio software.

Dodge Durango Recall Issued Following Detached Rear Spoilers

Chrysler recalls more than 5,300 Durangos because the rear spoilers may hit the roofs.

November 5, 2021 — Model year 2021 Dodge Durango rear spoilers are at risk of detaching from the SUVs, causing a recall of more than 5,300 Durangos.

Chrysler says the 2021 Dodge Durango rear spoilers may not be aligned properly with the roofs which can cause spoiler damage when the liftgate is used.

Fiat Chrysler says it opened an investigation in August following complaints about Durango rear spoilers that fell off while driving. Engineers found the rear spoiler may be "over-flush to the roof," allowing the spoiler to make contact with the roof when opening the liftgate.

The investigation found 74 warranty claims related to the Durango rear spoilers, but the automaker isn't aware of any crashes or injuries from loose and detached spoilers.

Dodge Durango occupants may be able to hear the rear spoilers when the spoilers hit the roofs, and occupants may also hear rattle sounds if the rear spoilers loosen.

In the U.S. about 4,837 Durangos are recalled and a rear spoiler Durango recall in Canada involves more than 500 SUVs.

Dodge dealers will replace the Durango rear spoilers, so owners should watch for recall notices in December 2021.

Owners of 2021 Dodge Durangos may call the automaker at 800-853-1403 and use recall reference number Y73.

DETROIT (AP) — Stellantis is recalling more than 240,000 diesel heavy-duty trucks, mainly in North America, to fix fuel pumps that can fail and cause engine stalls.
The recall covers certain 2019 and 2020 heavy-duty pickups and chassis cab trucks equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines.
The recall comes about a month after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the pump failures. But Stellantis says the company started its recall determination process before the probe was announced.
The safety agency said that in November of 2019, Fiat Chrysler (now Stellantis), maker of the trucks, issued a warranty bulletin to dealers telling them to collect fuel pumps on the trucks.

Stellantis says some of the pumps can wear and contaminate their mechanisms with metal shavings, causing engines to stall or fail to start.
Dealers will replace the pumps at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letters starting next month.
Federal safety investigators opened the probe after getting 22 complaints and two field reports of engines stalling. There were no reports of crashes or injuries.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Wagoneer SUVs Recalled

Front driver, passenger and knee airbags may be disabled, but no warning lights activate.

November 18, 2021 — A Jeep airbag failure recall involves nearly 100,000 model year 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and 2022 Grand Wagoneer vehicles.

Chrysler says it's possible the occupant restraint controllers may have incorrect software which can disable the driver, passenger and knee airbags without warning.

The supplier notified Fiat Chrysler (FCA) in September about a problem that didn't trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Chrysler opened an investigation and discovered some 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer vehicles may not set a DTC and the airbag warning light may not illuminate.

Although the recall was ordered, Chrysler is unaware of any warranty claims, customer complaints, injuries or crashes.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer owners may call 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number Y79.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer recalled

In September, while Fiat Chrysler engineers were working with supplier Veoneer on a manufacturing issue, they discovered a separate software issue concerning the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) for certain airbags. After six weeks of investigation, FCA decided on a voluntary safety recall for 87,780 units of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and 11,475 units of the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. That makes 99,255 SUVs that will need to visit the dealer for repairs, with an estimated defect rate of 100%.

The problem is a trio of internal faults with the airbag system that don't cause diagnostic trouble codes (DTC), which the faults are supposed to do. The faults can disable proper airbag deployment for the driver and passenger, as well as disable the knee airbags. These malfunctions can increase the risk of injury in a crash. However, since they don't throw up any diagnostic trouble codes, the airbag warning light won't illuminate to warn the driver and occupants that there's an issue with the airbag system. Jeep reports that it does not know of any injuries or fatalities stemming from this defect.

FCA says it will begin sending letters to notify owners sometime around December 30. Owners can take their Jeeps to the dealer to have the OCR reprogrammed free of charge. Meanwhile, owners of affected vehicles can call FCA's hotline at 1-800-853-1403 and cite voluntary recall number Y79. They can also call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to www.nhtsa.gov web site to view the recall information. 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Fuel Pump Recall Issued

More than 1,800 cars need new fuel pumps that won't suddenly fail.

November 29, 2021 — A Fiat 124 Spider fuel pump recall involves more than 1,800 cars with DENSO fuel pumps that may have impeller problems.

The 2019 Fiat 124 Spider fuel pumps can suddenly fail while driving, leaving drivers stranded and unable to restart the cars.

Chrysler learned about a Mazda fuel pump recall for a "substantially similar vehicle" early in November.

The fuel pumps were manufactured by DENSO which has recalled millions of the pumps with defective impellers.

There were issues when using solvent to dry the fuel pump impellers which can cause tiny cracks on the impeller surfaces. This can cause the impeller to absorb too much fuel, deforming the impeller which can then strike the body of the fuel pump, causing it to fail.

As of November 10, Chrysler is unaware of any crashes or injuries and only one fuel pump warranty claim has been received.

The U.S. Fiat 124 Spider fuel pump recall includes 1,622 cars, and a Canadian recall includes 205 cars.

Chrysler dealers will replace the fuel pumps once Fiat 124 Spider recall notices are mailed January 1, 2022.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs Recalled Over Odometer Failures

Chrysler recalls more than 3,600 Wrangler plug-in hybrids, odometers fail at 13,342 miles.

December 17, 2021 — A Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall includes more than 3,600 Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) equipped with odometers that can fail at 13,342 miles (21,473 kilometers).

Chrysler says the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe mileage display problem violates federal safety standards and will leave a driver guessing how many miles are on the vehicle.

"Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard ("FMVSS") 571.101, Controls and Displays, Section 4, defines the odometer as an indicator that must display the magnitude of its sensed characteristic, which is defined under Safety Act 49 USC 32702 Definitions, as the distance driven. After reaching 13,342 miles the odometers of these vehicles will no longer display the magnitude of its sensed characteristic (mileage)."
A Jeep Wrangler 4xe driver will easily see a failed odometer because the mileage display will only show two dashes but no numbers.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall includes about 734 SUVs in Canada.

Jeep dealers will update the instrument panel cluster software on vehicles with less than 13,342 miles (21,473 kilometers), but the Wrangler instrument panel will be replaced if the mileage isn't displayed.
