Rearview Camera Recall For Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, Ram 1500

Chrysler recalls about 8,000 vehicles equipped with EcoDiesel engines and certain radios.

September 2, 2022 — Chrysler radio software errors have caused a recall of about 8,000 model year 2020-2021 Jeep Wrangler, 2020-2021 Ram 1500 and 2021 Jeep Gladiator vehicles that may suffer from rearview camera image failures.


Fiat Chrysler (FCA) had discussions with the government in July regarding an investigation into rearview camera problems.


Engineers determined some vehicles equipped with EcoDiesel engines and certain radios may experience ongoing radio resets which may result in the rearview camera images failures.


The rearview camera image problem violates federal safety standard 571.111 S6.2.6.

"The rear visibility system default to the rearview image being visible, and meet the requirements of FMVSS 571.111 S6.2.1 (field of view) and S6.2.2 (image size) at the beginning of each backing event, regardless of any modifications to the field of view that the driver had previously selected."

A driver may notice the radio resetting before shifting to REVERSE, an indication the radio isn't working properly and won't provide a rearview image.


FCA dealerships will update the radio software once recall notices are mailed October 14, 2022.

About 5,300 Ram trucks in the U.S. and Canada need new engine control modules.

September 3, 2022 — A Ram engine control module recall includes more than 5,300 of these trucks equipped with Cummins 6.7L turbo diesel engines.

According to Fiat Chrysler, the engine control modules may have been built with misaligned capacitors that can short-circuit to the ground, causing a loss of communication.

An internal loss of communication could result in a loss of motive power.

Chrysler opened an investigation into the Ram trucks based on information about the engine control modules from an assembly plant. That same plant manufactured the trucks with the faulty engine control modules.
As of August 15, 2022, FCA is aware of two warranty claims but no crashes or injuries caused by the modules.
The Ram truck recall includes 420 trucks in Canada.

Ram dealerships will replace the engine control modules once Ram recall letters are mailed October 15, 2022.

Chrysler Pacifica Class Action Lawsuit Settlement Reached

Pacifica minivans are equipped with 3.6-liter V6 engines and 9-speed automatic transmissions.

September 12, 2022 — A Chrysler Pacifica class action lawsuit settlement has been reached for 2017-2021 Pacifica minivans equipped with 3.6-liter V6 engines and 9-speed automatic transmissions.

The Chrysler minivans are allegedly at risk of losing power or stalling without warning.


The Chrysler Pacifica class action lawsuit was originally filed December 30, 2017, and entitled, Wildin et al. v. FCA US LLC, but in October 2018 the lawsuit was retitled, Moran et al. v. FCA US LLC.


The class action lawsuit alleges the Chrysler Pacifica engines stall due to a loss of engine timing and crankshaft position synchronization. The plaintiffs also allege transmission defects cause the minivans to suddenly lose power.


According to the Pacifica class action lawsuit, Fiat Chrysler (FCA) issued a recall in January 2018 to repair the Pacificas. But the two plaintiffs who filed the lawsuit allege the recall was nothing more than a repackaged software patch that has been available since August 2017 (T23 update).


Additionally, the class action asserts Pacifica engines continue to stall even after the vehicles have allegedly been fixed.


Class action documents claim Chrysler knew or should have known about the Pacifica problems since at least March 2016, and dealerships allegedly either deny the problem or perform repairs that only mask the symptoms.


In August 2017, FCA issued “Customer Satisfaction Notification T23 EGR Valve Function” and “TSB 08-069-07 PCM Reprogram.” The repair updated the powertrain control module software because Pacifica owners complained about engine malfunction lights.


In a motion to dismiss the Pacifica lawsuit, FCA argued the TSB had nothing to do with alleged stalling problems.


When Chrysler recalled the Pacificas, owners were told their minivans didn't need repairs if the minivans already had the T23 software updates.


The two plaintiffs argue Chrysler should stop its deception and stop selling or leasing the Pacifica minivans and give customers "all or part of the ill-gotten profits it received from the sale or lease of its Class Vehicles."


In addition, the plaintiffs say FCA should, "remove, repair, and/or replace the Class Vehicles’ with suitable alternative product(s) that do not contain the defects alleged herein."

Chrysler Pacifica Class Action Lawsuit Settlement

Prior to the Pacifica settlement, the crankshaft position sensor was covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, but the warranty for the sensor will be extended to 5 years or 60,000 miles. However, the 5 years or 60,000 miles are from the date the Pacifica minivan was purchased or leased.


This means the "extended warranty" may expire for some owners before the settlement is even approved.


FCA agreed to reimburse Chrysler Pacifica customers when the TSB and recall were announced, but the settlement says minivan customers can be reimbursed for repairs to the crankshaft position sensors.


However, reimbursement is only available if the customer purchased or leased a Pacifica more than five years before the effective date of the settlement and before the minivan reached 60,000 miles.


According to the Chrysler Pacifica class action lawsuit settlement, customers must submit proof of ownership and claim forms within 180 days of the effective date of the settlement.


All future repairs must use replacement crankshaft position sensor with part number 68079375AD or a later version.


The settlement also says a Pacifica customer may file a claim to have the stalling minivan repurchased by Fiat Chrysler.

According to the proposed Chrysler Pacifica class action settlement, the two plaintiffs who sued will receive $10,000 each, and their attorneys will receive $835,000.

Chrysler Minivan Sliding Door Problems Being Addressed

Government says Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country sliding door probe closed.

August 3, 2022 — Chrysler minivan sliding door problems that caused a federal investigation has allegedly been addressed by the automaker as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closes the investigation.


The federal investigation was opened into 233,000 model year 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan and 2016 Chrysler Town and Country minivans because the left and right sliding door lock actuator assemblies could fail.


This caused one or both doors to get stuck closed, and trying to open them electronically or manually failed.


NHTSA opened the investigation after receiving 364 sliding door complaints, with many owners complaining about removing rear seat passengers through the front doors, the windows or the rear hatches. This spells trouble in the event of an emergency.


Fiat Chrysler (FCA) had issued technical service bulletin (TSB) 23-017-20 in June 2020 instructing dealers to replace the door lock actuators instead of the entire door latch assemblies.


In addition to sliding doors that wouldn't open, 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan and 2016 Chrysler Town and Country owners reported hearing a loud buzzing noise during lock/unlock operations.


Then in June 2021, FCA approved a sliding door warranty extension of 15 years or 150,000 miles for door lock actuators on minivans built between May 1, 2015, through January 9, 2017.


Chrysler has started notifying owners about the new program and will provide reimbursement for owners who previously paid for minivan sliding door repairs.


NHTSA says the number of new complaints has been decreasing since 2020 and further reduced following the sliding door warranty extension program. The government also says no crashes or injuries have been reported the past six years.


Although the Chrysler minivan sliding door investigation is closed, NHTSA will monitor future complaints and may take additional actions if needed.

Chrysler Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensor Recall Investigated

Recall of 2016 Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot SUVs may not have been enough.

August 2, 2022 — A Chrysler crankshaft and camshaft sensor recall from 2016 is under investigation following 127 complaints about the same sensor failures from owners of Fiat Chrysler vehicles not included in the recall.


The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes the 2016 crankshaft and camshaft sensor recall involved 2016 Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot vehicles. But those specific 43,000 vehicles were manufactured only between May 9, 2016, to July 15, 2016.


The recalled 2016 Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot SUVs were prone to experience stalled 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engines. NHTSA also said the engines could simply fail to start.


Chrysler said the crankshaft or camshaft sensors could work, but only off and on which caused the engines to stall or fail to start.


While the 2016 recall included about 43,000 SUVs in the U.S., this latest query involves about 290,000 model year 2016 Dodge Journey, 2016 Jeep Compass and 2016 Jeep Patriot SUVs.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Battery Recall Finally Begins
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid fires may have been in the battery packs, but FCA still isn't sure.

October 4, 2022 — A 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid battery recall will finally get underway after owners had to wait months for Fiat Chrysler (FCA) to get replacement batteries to dealerships.

The 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have experienced fires that may have originated at the center of the minivans where the high-voltage battery packs are located.

The original battery fire recall was announced in February when FCA knew of 12 fires but didn't know the root cause of the fires. The automaker still doesn't know.
The fires occurred even with the ignitions turned off, and Chrysler is still warning owners to park outside and away from things that could catch fire. Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid owners are also advised not to charge the batteries.

The recalled Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids were built from August 12, 2016, to August 7, 2018.
FCA opened an investigation in August 2021 due to fires in Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids. The automaker repurchased two of the minivans to investigate the cause of the fires.
That original fire investigation is still going on as engineers have been unable to track down the root cause or even if the battery packs are responsible.

As of February 4, 2022, Chrysler knew of 12 Pacifica Hybrid fires but no crash or injury reports.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid battery recall letters will be mailed October 11, 2022. Dealerships will update the battery pack control module software that will be used to monitor the battery packs for conditions that could lead to a battery fire.

Fiat Chrysler class action over Dodge Dart clutch defect settled

• Fiat Chrysler reached a settlement agreement with a class of drivers arguing the company sold model year 2013-2015 Dodge Dart vehicles with allegedly defective clutches.
• The parties reached the settlement agreement about one week before a trial was set to begin, Law360 reports.
• The class of drivers and Fiat Chrysler asked the court to grant them 90 days to work out the terms of the settlement agreement.
• Fiat Chrysler previously made several unsuccessful attempts to dismiss the complaint or slim down the class of drivers since the class action lawsuit was filed in June 2016.

A Class of California drivers who bought or leased Dodge Darts on or before November 2014 were granted certification of their class action lawsuit by a federal judge.


Plaintiff Carlos Victorino alleged that Chrysler failed to properly address problems with the clutch in 2013 to 2016 Dodge Darts with Fiat C635 transmissions.


According to the complaint, the cars stall, fail to accelerate, and fail to get into gears properly as a result of the problem – presenting a safety hazard to those in the cars and on the road.


The Dodge manual transmission defect class action lawsuit faced an uphill battle when it came to certifying the proposed Class of both new and used car owners. In the summer of 2018, U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel found that the proposed Class was too broad and suffered from other problems.

Judge Curiel originally rejected the proposed Class, but allowed the plaintiff to rectify the problems. In his most recent ruling, the judge stated that the plaintiff had “presented evidence common to the proposed class that he intends to use to prove his claim.”


“At trial, plaintiff will have to prove that all class vehicles had a defect at the time of sale. If plaintiff fails to demonstrate a defect in all vehicles at the time of sale, all class claims will fail in one fell swoop,” the judge’s order continues.


According to the Dodge manual transmission defect class action lawsuit, Chrysler sold vehicles with a known problem; however, when presented with complaints about the clutch issues, the car company responded with extended warranty offers. The complaint contends that this weak response failed to appropriately mitigate the issues car owners were faced with after purchasing the Dart.


The defect, according to the class action lawsuit, is caused by degradation of the clutch reservoir hose. Ultimately, use of the clutch leads to contamination of hydraulic fluid by fibers and other substances, leading the clutch master and slave cylinder to ultimately fail. The results of the defect are dangerous, according to the complaint, causing the clutch pedal to stick to the floor, among other problems.


The extended warranty offered by Chrysler was not sufficient to resolve the issues, alleged the plaintiff. Chrysler’s fix was limited and did not address the cause of the defect in the first place – the contamination of the hydraulic fluid.


The class action lawsuit lodged allegations of breach of warranty under California state and federal laws. They also accused Chrysler of violating the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act and unfair competition law.


After losing the original bid for certification, the Dodge manual transmission defect class action lawsuit was modified to include a proposed Class limited to those who purchased allegedly defective vehicles in California. Originally, the plaintiff had sought to represent a nationwide Class.

Dodge Journeys Recalled For Reflex Reflector Issues
Chrysler recalls 83,000 Journey SUVs, but dealers aren't sure how repairs will be performed.


October 6, 2022 — A Dodge Journey recall has been announced to fix problems with the amber side reflex reflectors in the headlight assemblies.

However, Chrysler isn't sure what dealers will do to repair more than 83,000 SUVs.


The recalled 2017-2018 Dodge Journey SUV reflectors may not reflect brightly enough, something that violates federal safety standards.

"If the reflection of light from the reflector is below specification, the position and dimensions of the vehicle may not always be perceived by other drivers, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning." — Chrysler

Fiat Chrysler opened an investigation in December 2018 following an audit of a Dodge Journey front amber side reflex reflector performed by Transport Canada.


Chrysler couldn't find any warranty claims, complaints, field reports, crashes or injuries, so the automaker filed a petition for inconsequential treatment with the government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration denied the petition and requested a formal recall.


The Dodge SUVs were built August 2, 2017, to July 6, 2018.

Owners of some 2022 Dodge Challenger coupes and Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans should take their vehicles to a dealership for a free recall repair to fix a problem with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). A total of 44,212 vehicles are being recalled. (Learn about TPMS.)

The batteries on the TPMS sensors may fail prematurely. If this happens, the sensor will become inoperative and, as a result, the driver may not be alerted if a tire loses pressure. In addition, if a TPMS warning light is already illuminated due to the failed battery, the driver may not be alerted to an actual tire pressure loss. Both of these situations can lead to tire failure and increase the risk of a crash.


The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 138, which relates to tire pressure monitoring systems.
Some Chrysler and Dodge cars were already recalled in June for a similar problem.

• Dodge Challenger coupes manufactured between Jan. 25, 2022, and Aug. 11, 2022.
• Dodge Charger sedans manufactured between Jan. 25, 2022, and Aug. 16, 2022.
• Chrysler 300 sedans manufactured between Jan. 27, 2022, and Aug. 11, 2022.

The problem: The battery may prematurely fail in the TPMS in certain vehicles, which will cause the system to fail to identify if a tire has lost air pressure.

The fix: Chrysler and Dodge dealerships will inspect and replace the TPMS sensors, if necessary, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners of affected vehicles can call the automaker at 888-327-4236. Chrysler and Dodge will notify owners via mail starting Dec. 16, 2022.

Inoperative TPMS sensors will not alert the driver to low tire pressure. In addition, a TPMS warning light that is already illuminated from a failed battery sensor will mask an actual tire pressure failure issue. Either of these scenarios can result in tire failure and increase the risk of a crash.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles issued a “Do Not Drive” warning today for roughly 276,000 model year 2005 - 2010 Dodge Magnums, Chargers, and Challengers, as well as MY 2005-2010 Chrysler 300s. The warning comes after two people died in separate crashes involving 2010 Dodge Chargers where the Takata driver’s side air bags exploded.

Additionally, NHTSA is aware of several other suspected inflator ruptures in vehicles from other automakers potentially due to exploding Takata air bags.
NHTSA is urging ALL vehicle owners to immediately check to see if their vehicle has an open Takata air bag recall. If it does, owners need to contact their dealership to schedule a FREE repair as soon as possible and follow any warnings from the vehicle manufacturer. Dealerships will work with vehicle owners to arrange ways to get the vehicles in for the repair.

“Left unrepaired, recalled Takata air bags are increasingly dangerous as the risk of an explosion rises as vehicles age. Every day that passes when you don’t get a recalled airbag replaced, puts you and your family at greater risk of injury or death,” said NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson. “An exploding Takata air bag can send metal fragments toward the driver or passengers, and this shrapnel can kill – and has – killed or maimed people.”

Even minor crashes can result in exploding air bags that can kill or produce life-altering injuries.

Older model year vehicles, such as these 2010 sedans, put their occupants at higher risk as the age of the air bag is one of the contributing factors.

RAM TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS CAUSE 16 FIRES, AND A RECALL
Ram truck 68RFE transmission problems cause transmission fluid to leak from the dipstick tube.

November 17, 2022 — Ram transmission problems have caused a recall of more than 248,000 trucks following 16 reports of fires caused by leaking transmission fluid.
The recalled 2020-2023 Ram 2500 and 2020-2022 Ram 3500 trucks are equipped with Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel engines and 68RFE transmissions.

Fiat Chrysler says the transmission can have a problem with pressure and heat that builds up inside the 68RFE transmission, causing transmission fluid to leak from the dipstick tube.
The Ram truck fires occurred once transmission fluid leaked onto hot ignition sources in the engine compartments.

FCA opened an internal investigation in June due to a trend of engine compartment fires in 2020-2023 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. Engineers checked witness statements, fire patterns and other information to confirm the fire trend.

Chrysler determined the affected Ram trucks were built between September 2019 and November 2022.

In addition to the 16 Ram truck fires, FCA has received several warranty claims and one report of a minor injury.

However, Chrysler asserts there are no reports of fatalities related to the transmission problems or fires.

Chrysler says the only prior warning of a problem a Ram owner may have is an illuminated warning light.

To date, Chrysler doesn't know how dealers will repair the Ram transmission problems, but the automaker will mail Ram transmission fluid leak recall letters December 30, 2022.

November 19, 2022 — A Jeep sway bar disconnect class action lawsuit alleges California consumers are driving dangerous Fiat Chrysler (FCA) vehicles.
According to the class action, a sway bar (anti-roll bar or stabilizer bar) is part of the suspension system and provides stability to help prevent the vehicle from leaning to one side when turning.
The lawsuit alleges driving on streets or highways with a disconnected sway bar is dangerous.
The Chrysler sway bar class action lawsuit includes all California consumers who "purchased, leased or owned" any of these FCA vehicles equipped with electronic sway bar disconnect features.

The vehicles are meant for highway driving and off-road driving, and it can help to disconnect the sway bar when driving off-road. The electronic sway bar disconnect is supposed to allow a Jeep or Ram driver to quickly disconnect and reconnect the sway bar simply by pushing a button on the dash.
But the class action lawsuit alleges there are problems that cause the sway bar to suddenly disconnect when it shouldn't. This will allegedly force a Jeep or Ram driver to drive on streets and highways with a disconnected sway bar. It's on the streets when a vehicle needs the sway bar connected.
Jeep Sway Bar Disconnect Lawsuit Plaintiff
The owner who filed the class action lawsuit contends the electronic circuit board for the sway bar disconnect is in a housing with seals that are prone to failure. It is also located in an area that is allegedly likely to get wet from common rain or water puddles.
The lawsuit alleges the failed circuit board will disconnect the sway bar.
California plaintiff Eric Hunter owns a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited which allegedly suffered from the sway bar disconnect issue. The plaintiff says his Jeep stopped working and left him stranded in a parking garage.
The Jeep Wrangler displayed a sway bar fault on the dashboard, so he got the Jeep to a Chrysler dealership.
According to the lawsuit, the dealer blamed the problem on unrelated parts which the plaintiff claims were working fine.

"After the attempted repairs, Mr. Hunter had to bring the car back several times because the Sway Bar Defect continued to manifest. To date, Mr. Hunter has spent a substantial amount of money to have the sway bar and the wiring harness replaced, but the problems have not yet been resolved." — Jeep sway bar disconnect lawsuit

FCA allegedly markets the electronic sway bar disconnect as a premium off-road feature at a premium price.
According to Jeep:

"The Electronic Sway Bar Disconnect system allows you to remotely disconnect your sway bar from the cabin, so front wheels can drop and compress for better suspension and articulation on tough terrain."

However, the class action lawsuit alleges the disconnect system causes only problems at a premium price, and replacing a damaged electronic sway bar disconnect can cost up to $2,000 just for the part alone.

FCA RECALLS RAM 1500, JEEP GLADIATOR AND JEEP WRANGLER
Chrysler recalls more than 3,200 vehicles because the seat belt pretensioners could fail.

November 27, 2022 — A Chrysler seat belt retractor recall involves more than 3,200 model year 2022 Ram 1500, 2022 Jeep Gladiator and 2021 Jeep Wrangler vehicles.
The front seat pretensioners could fail because the seat belt retractors may have faulty welded micro gas generators.
Fiat Chrysler opened an investigation in May to look at front seat belt assemblies in 2021-2022 Ram 1500, Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler vehicles.
The problem was traced to a supplier which had made mistakes with maintenance of a friction welder used on the Chrysler seat belt retractor assemblies. FCA engineers performed tests which indicated a vehicle occupant may not be protected in a crash.
Chrysler is unaware of any reports of complaints, warranty claims, crashes or injuries related to the pretensioners.
FCA owners should watch for recall letters in December 2022. Dealerships will need to replace the front seat belt retractors.

JEEP WRANGLER 4XE RECALL SAYS SUVS SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN
Fiat Chrysler recalls 63,000 Wrangler hybrids following two crashes and one injury.

December 3, 2022 — A Jeep Wrangler 4xe recall has been announced because the 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe SUVs can stall and shut down.

The 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are equipped with 2-liter engines.

According to Fiat Chrysler (FCA), the Jeep recall of 63,000 vehicles follows, "112 customer assistance records, 196 warranty claims, and 65 field reports potentially related to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from December 17, 2020, to October 26, 2022."

FCA opened an internal investigation in September into 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEVs for a loss of motive power.

Chrysler learned about two Wrangler 4xe crashes and one injury, convincing the automaker to issue the recall.

"Some 2021-2023 MY Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles equipped with the 2.0L PHEV may experience an engine shut down condition caused by diagnostic reactions to faults caused by loss of communication." — FCA

FCA says the problem began in September 2020 and ended in August 2022 when the 2023 Wrangler 4xe model year production began with updated vehicle control software.

Jeep dealerships will update the transmission control module software, but Wrangler 4xe owners may call 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number ZB7.

In 2021, Chrysler was served a class action lawsuit that alleged Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs had defects that caused the engines to suddenly shut down.
