Chrysler Ignition Switches Are Investigated

06/18/2014

Concern over the safety of ignition switches in vehicles is spreading beyond General Motors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating about 1.2 million Chrysler minivans and sport utility vehicles over a concern that jostling the ignition key could accidentally turn off the engine and disable the air bags.

The issue appears similar to the defect that has thrown General Motors into turmoil and forced it to recall millions of vehicles for a defect the that automaker has admitted is linked to at least 13 deaths.

The Chrysler action — pertaining to Jeep Commanders and Grand Cherokees; Grand Caravan and Town and Country minivans; and Journey sport utility vehicles — comprises two investigations.

The first covers about 525,000 Jeep Commanders from the 2006 and 2007 model years, and Jeep Grand Cherokees from the 2005 and 2006 model years, according to a report published Wednesday on the agency’s website.

The agency says it has received at least 32 complaints from the Jeep owners say that the driver’s knee hit the ignition key.

“This causes the engine to shut off, affects power steering and brakes and may potentially result in the vehicle’s air bags not deploying during a frontal crash,” the report said.

Some of those complaints were filed with the safety agency at least six years ago.

“This has happened four times now,” wrote one owner in a complaint filed in June 2008. “I was driving my one-year-old son to the babysitter’s house. My knee bumped the key as I was approaching a turn, shutting off the vehicle/power steering. So, I kept going straight and nearly crashes. Luckily I slammed the brakes and stopped just in time.”

The second action covers about 700,000 Grand Caravan, Town and Country minivans and the Journey sport utility vehicles from the 2008 to 2010 model years, according to a report by the agency also posted Wednesday.

This investigation relates to a 2011 Chrysler recall of about 248,000 2010 Grand Caravans, Town and Country minivans and Journeys for an ignition-key problem that could also result in the engine’s being inadvertently turned off. That action also included about 12,000 Volkswagen Routan models from 2010 that were built by Chrysler.

But the safety regulators say they have received 23 complaints about ignition-key problems from owners of 2008 — 10 versions of those models that were not recalled and a few who said they have the recall fix and the problem occurred again. So, it is investigating whether the automaker should be required to expand the recall.

Chrysler could not immediately be reached for comment.

VW recalling 18,500 minivans for ignition problems

Washington — Volkswagen AG is recalling 18,500 2009 Routan minivans because the ignition key can move to the “off” or “accessory” position under rough road conditions, causing the vehicle to potentially stall and the airbags to fail in the event of the crash.

VW is the latest automaker to recall vehicles for ignition problems since General Motors Co. has recalled more than 17 million vehicles this year worldwide for ignition problems. Chrysler Group LLC — a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV — built the Routan for VW — largely a rebadged Chrysler Town and Country/Dodge Grand Caravan — and informed VW of the need for the recall.

VW will modify the ignition switch and begin the recall this month.

In late June, Chrysler said it would recall nearly 696,000 minivans and SUVs worldwide under government pressure because ignition keys could rotate out of the "on" position, potentially causing stalling and the air bag not to deploy in a front-end crash. Chrysler said it was expand a 2011 recall — that also covered some Routan vehicles — to cover the 2009 Dodge Journey and 2008-09 Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country "for inadvertent ignition key rotation from the run position to the accessory position."

VW has now recalled about 31,000 vehicles since 2011 for the issue.

Chrysler said it was fixing the vehicles by installing a more robust ignition module detent ring.

Chrysler said it had about 30 customer complaints and 465 warranty claims alleging inadvertent engine shut-off while driving — and reports of two rear-end collisions arising from the condition. There are no reports of deaths or injuries from air bags failing to deploy in crashes linked to the defect.

Chrysler disclosed that on June 17, NHTSA asked the automaker in a phone call to recall the 2008-09 vehicles. But the automaker is standing by its recall remedy — adding a detent ring to the switch to make it stiffer, instead of replacing the entire part — even though NHTSA has concerns it may not work.

Chrysler has now recalled about 1.7 million vehicles for ignition switch problems since 2011. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still is investigating whether Chrysler's fix is adequate in most of the recalled vehicles. In July, Chrysler also said was recalling nearly 800,000 older Jeep SUVs for ignition switch problems, and is urging owners to only use the ignition key as the automaker works to find a fix.

The company said the recall covers some 2006-07 Jeep Commander and 2005-07 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs, and said its engineers are seeking a remedy. "Chrysler is committing now to conduct a recall out of an abundance of caution," the company said.

Chrysler advised owners to make sure there is enough clearance between their knees and the keys so that the key doesn't get bumped and accidentally turn off the engine. As a further precaution, owners are advised to remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key.

The problem is similar to the issue that has rocked cross-town rival General Motors Co. after it failed to promptly recall 2.6 million cars linked to at least 13 deaths when air bags failed to deploy after vehicles stalled. GM has recalled about 15 million other vehicles for other ignition problems this year.

In an interview in July, acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman said the agency is looking more broadly at the issue of whether other automakers have ignition issues: "This whole GM Cobalt recall brought to light a whole set of new information about interactions between ignition switches and air bags. We quickly jumped on that new information ... We're still in that process."

The Commander and Grand Cherokee have a different ignition switch — an instrument panel mounted switch — compared to column ignition switches in the minivans.

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will modify the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1- 800-822-8987. Volkswagens number for this recall is 28G1/U8. Note: This campaign is an expansion of NHTSA Recall No. 11V-151.

Statement: Latching Mechanism
December 13, 2022 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Stellantis is voluntarily recalling an estimated 1.23 million pickup trucks to inspect and realign, as needed, certain latching components on their tailgates.

A routine review of customer service records led to a Stellantis investigation that discovered tailgate striker plates on certain pickup trucks may not be sufficiently aligned to accommodate complete closure. Such a condition, if it occurs, may put unsecured cargo at risk of spilling onto a roadway.

Stellantis is unaware of any potentially related injuries or accidents.

The recall is limited to certain model-year 2019-2022 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups.

Vehicles equipped with Ram’s multifunction tailgate and Ram 1500 Classic pickups are unaffected. Also excluded are vehicles equipped with sensors that alert drivers to insecure tailgates.

Affected customers will be advised as early as next month when service, which will be provided free of charge, becomes available. Stellantis urges customers to heed the instructions on all recall notifications.

In the interim, customers are reminded to secure cargo as referenced in their owners’ manuals. Those with additional questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

The recall also affects vehicles in Canada (est. 120,759), Mexico (est. 26.613) and certain markets outside North America (est. 27,404).

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ram is recalling a total of 1,234,657 pickup trucks in the United States (plus a few hundred thousand sold outside the U.S.) to address tailgates that could pop open while driving. According to documentation posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "Misaligned tailgate strikers may cause a failure to properly latch the tailgate." If that happens, the tailgate could pop open unexpectedly, regardless of whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion. If that were to happen with a load in the truck bed while the vehicle was being driven, it could allow cargo to fall out, endangering other drivers.

Between June, 2019 and November, 2022, the automaker says it received 15 customer assistance records, 736 warranty claims, and 101 field reports potentially related to this issue, but isn't aware of any accidents or injuries potentially related to the issue. Stellantis, which owns the Ram brand, will reimburse any owners who paid to have this issue resolved in the past. No parts need to be replaced to fix the problem, just realigned.

According to NHTSA's documentation, on June 13, 2018, the automaker started building 2019-model-year trucks. Trucks built from that date until July 10, 2022, are included in the recall. After that date, "improved alignment tooling was implemented in vehicle production," which seems to have solved the problem. Still, less than 1% of all trucks are thought to be affected by the misaligned tailgate strikers. The automaker will notify dealers and begin notifying owners on or about 01/27/2023.

Over 67,000 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids Recalled Over Engine Hazard
An electric short could kill the engine while you're driving.

JAN 26, 2023

Chrysler Pacifica hybrid driving in the mountains.
Chrysler
The popular Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan is having a rough few months. After a recall for fire risks late last year, the automaker is now alerting over 67,000 Pacifica Hybrid owners of a new recall that could shut off the engine, even when the car is in motion, which is a significant safety hazard.
According to a report sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by Chrysler, over 67,000 minivans between model years 2017 and 2023 could experience a short circuit, which causes the gas engine to shut off and stop running.
It’s worth noting that the problem isn’t with the hybrid electric system but an internal transmission wiring connector that pairs the two systems. Chrysler says the connector could short out, resulting in an unexpected engine shutdown.

The recall covers all Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid PHEV minivans manufactured between August 12th, 2016, and January 9th, 2023. Stellantis (the parent company) will notify owners in early March about the recall and start setting up visits to the dealership.

However, this isn’t a permanent solution, at least not yet. The initial recall will provide a software update that could alert owners of a potential failure, giving them enough time to pull over safely. In the meantime, the company is busy working on a complete solution to the problem.
So far, the company has only received around 300 reports from the issue, with no crashes or injuries reported. Still, you’ll want to keep an eye out for the recall notice, get the update, and stay tuned for more details.

Issue
On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: This recall supersedes special service campaign 2015-003. Correction: Dealers will replace airbag inflators. All vehicles having received a replacement inflator as part of the previous special service campaign will have a replacement inflator installed.

Statement: Electrical Connection
February 15, 2023 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is recalling an estimated 306,165 U.S.-market vehicles to replace an electrical connector.

An FCA US investigation discovered the intake heater-grid relays on certain vehicles may exhibit overheating. In rare instances, this condition may pose a fire risk.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents. There are reports of six potentially related fires – five occurred while the vehicles’ engines were still on; the remaining incident was reported after the ignition was turned off.

Affected are certain model-year Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, and 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis trucks from model years 2021-2023. The recall population is limited to vehicles equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines and prior-generation heater-grid relays, which were the focus of two previous but smaller campaigns.

Despite the minimal risk, the Company advises custodians of these models, not to park their vehicles indoors.

FCA expects to begin notifying affected customers next month. But as of Feb. 16, customers may determine if their vehicles are included in the campaign by inputting their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on search engines such as mopar.com/recalls, checktoprotect.org, or nhtsa.gov.

Customers with additional questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.

The recall affects additional vehicles in Canada (est. 21,988), and in certain markets outside North America (est. 12,590).

Ram recalls 340,000 heavy-duty Cummins-powered trucks for fire risk

Jeremy Korzeniewski
Thu, February 16, 2023 at 12:30 PM EST

Ram is notifying owners of over 340,000 heavy-duty pickup trucks to park outside due to the risk of a fire. The affected vehicles use an older type of heater-grid electrical connector that is no longer in use, according to the Associated Press. A similar recall was performed in 2021, covering a smaller number of trucks. Included in this latest recall are certain 2021-2023 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups along with Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab models.
Official documents for this latest fire-related recall have not yet been posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The similar 2021 recall, however, said, "Owners are advised to park these vehicles outside of buildings or structures, and not near other vehicles, until the vehicle has been remedied." So it's not surprising that CNBC reports that Stellantis is again advising owners to park their vehicles outside.

A total of 306,165 trucks affected by this recall were sold in the U.S., and 21,988 more were sold in Canada. The remaining 12,590 were sold outside of North America. All of the affected trucks are powered by Ram's 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine.

CHRYSLER TIGERSHARK LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT FINAL
Tigershark engines allegedly suffer from excessive oil conumption which damages the engines.
By David A. Wood, CarComplaints.com

Chrysler Tigershark Lawsuit Settlement Final

February 23, 2023 — A Chrysler Tigershark engine lawsuit has been granted final approval after nine class action lawsuits were filed against the automaker.
According to the class action lawsuit, the 2.4L Tigershark engines can shut off while in motion due to problems with excessive oil consumption.
The Tigershark lawsuit settlement includes these Fiat Chrysler (FCA) vehicles.
  • 2015-2017 Chrysler 200
  • 2013-2016 Dodge Dart
  • 2014-2019 Jeep Cherokee (manufactured prior to July 2018)
  • 2015-2018 Jeep Renegade
  • 2017-2018 Jeep Compass
  • 2015-2018 Ram ProMaster City
  • 2016-2018 Fiat 500x
The plaintiffs claim the Tigershark engines have multiple defects and dealer repairs don't help.
FCA says it decided to settle the class action lawsuit to put an end to the nine class actions that were consolidated into one, but the automaker denies all liability and wrongdoing.
The consolidated lawsuit includes these class actions:
Chrysler Tigershark Class Action Lawsuit Settlement
According to the settlement agreement, customers may be eligible for a powertrain extended warranty which will extend the powertrain warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles.
However, the 7-year or 100,000-mile warranty begins from the date the vehicle was first used by the customer. This means for some owners of the older vehicles, the extended warranty had already expired before the class action settlement was final.
For customers who are eligible, the Tigershark powertrain extended warranty will cover expenses to repair oil consumption problems as long as the vehicle fails an oil consumption test performed by a dealership.
In addition, the vehicle must fail an oil consumption test after all customer service notification (CSN) programs have been performed on the vehicle.
Those include CSN W20, CSN W80, and CSN W84.
Customers may also qualify for reimursements for certain expenses related to Tigershark engines. However, there are conditions that must be met to receive reimbursements.
A vehicle owner can be reimbursed for money spent to tow a vehicle or for a rental car if the Tigershark engine was repaired for oil consumption issues. However, here are the conditions.
The rental car or towing services must have occurred within 24 hours of a qualifying repair performed due to oil consumption.
A completed repair-related expense reimbursement claim form must be submitted by the filing deadline which is 90 days after the settlement is final or March 1, 2023, whichever is later.
Customers will need to provide proof of Tigershark expenses and other requested documents.
A Chrysler customer may also qualify for $340 if the vehicle "is, or has been, diagnosed as having an Oil Consumption Defect and receives an engine long block replacement pursuant to the terms of CSN W80."
Nine of the plaintiffs who sued will receive $3,000 each, 25 plaintiffs will receive $2,000 each and the remaining eight plaintiffs will receive $1,000 each. Attorneys representing the plaintiffs will receive $7,500,000.

JEEP CLUTCH RECALL INVOLVES GLADIATOR AND WRANGLER SUVS
Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler clutch pressure plate recall includes 77,000 vehicles.

Water Vehicle Land vehicle Wheel Tire

March 2, 2023 — A Jeep clutch recall involves Gladiator and Wrangler SUVs equipped with clutch pressure plates that may overheat and break apart.

The Jeep clutch recall includes about 77,000 model year 2018-2023 Jeep Wrangler and 2020-2023 Jeep Gladiator vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.

This is the third Jeep clutch pressure plate recall involving the Gladiators and Wranglers.

"In some circumstances, the clutch pressure plate may become overheated through friction, which may lead the pressure plate to rapidly fracture. When a pressure plate fractures, it may result in cracks or holes in the transmission case, allowing heated debris to be expelled from the transmission case." — Fiat Chrysler
The heated debris can come into contact with a hot ignition source and start a fire.

Chrysler engineers investigated Jeep clutch plate failure fires in December 2022 and January 2023 after finding an increasing trend of fires.

The investigation included 2018-2023 Jeep Wrangler and 2020-2023 Jeep Gladiator SUVs built after the 2021 recall.

As of February 9, 2023, FCA knew of "26 customer assistance records, 36 warranty claims, and six field reports potentially related to this issue for all markets with dates of receipt ranging from July 5, 2021 to January 12, 2023."

Additionally, the automaker is aware of one injury but no crashes.

Jeep drivers should be aware of smells from burning clutches, if they feel slipping clutches or if they see warning messages.

About 7,500 Jeeps are recalled in Canada.

Recently called back due to a clutch issue affecting manual transmission-equipped models, the Wrangler has been recalled again. The problem stems from a frame stud, which is described as "unnecessary."

Tire Vehicle Wheel Car Automotive tire

57,885 units of the 2020 to 2023 model year Jeep Wrangler are recalled, plus 150 frames produced in the period between January 10th, 2020 and May 4th, 2022. Four part numbers are listed in the reports attached below. Said frames were manufactured by Metalsa, a Mexico-based supplier that’s also contracted for the soon-to-be-revealed 2024 model year Toyota Tacoma.

Chrysler, which still goes under the FCA US LLC moniker stateside following the merger with Groupe PSA, became aware of this problem last year. The Auburn Hills-based automaker immediately started investigating the unnecessary frame stud, which is prone to come in contact with the fuel tank in case of a crash.

The resulting leak may lead to a fire, thus increasing the risk of injury to the occupants and other traffic participants. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles isn’t aware of accidents or injuries related to said concern. Dealers will remove said frame stud, then apply paint over that area.

Both dealers and owners will be informed of this recall on or about May 12th, as per the attached reports. Neither says how Fiat Chrysler Automobiles fixed this problem in production. The Auburn Hills-based automaker does note that frames not included in this recall were produced sans the additional stud before or after the suspect period.

The 2023 model year Jeep Wrangler comes in a whopping 13 trim levels, with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8-powered Rubicon 392 topping the lineup. The most basic of specifications can be had for $31,195 in the form of the Jeep Wrangler two-door Sport, whereas the four-door version retails at $35,690 excluding the freight charge.

The $41,985 Sport Altitude, $46,120 Sahara, $47,290 Sport RHD, $50,720 Sahara Altitude, $52,035 High Tide special edition, $55,215 High Altitude, and $82,495 Rubicon 392 boast four doors as standard. There is no two-door body style for them, which is understandable given that the four-door Wrangler is far more popular.

Powertrain choices include a naturally-aspirated sixer, turbocharged four-cylinder lump, the aforementioned HEMI engine, and the turbocharged four in combination with plug-in assistance. The Pentastar V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet (352 Nm) on full song, which is OK for a vehicle of this footprint and weight.

The low-inertia turbocharger of the 2.0-liter mill is the secret to 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) of torque, with said engine being standard in the Sahara trim level. The big-boy Rubicon 392 pumps out a stout 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet (637 Nm) of twist. As for the plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe, this powertrain matches the peak torque of the Rubicon 392 while also promising up to 21 all-electric miles (34 kilometers).

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 was discontinued in January 2023. The Wrangler Rubicon FarOut special edition is the final application of this engine in the JL Wrangler.

RAM ABS MODULE RECALL NEEDED, ALLEGES CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
Ram truck class action lawsuit alleges 2500 and 3500 trucks lose important features.

Ram ABS Module Recall Needed, Alleges Class Action Lawsuit

April 16, 2023 — A Ram ABS module recall allegedly should have been issued by Fiat Chrysler because of problems in 2017-2018 Ram 2500 and 2017-2018 Ram 3500 trucks.
According to a Ram class action lawsuit, a recall is needed because every truck is allegedly equipped with a defective and dangerous hydraulic control unit (HCU) module and anti-lock braking system (ABS) module.
The lawsuit alleges the trucks lose anti-lock braking, cruise control and traction control.
Those allegedly missing features and systems make it more difficult to control the Ram trucks, especially on wet or snowy roads as braking becomes more difficult.
Without Chrysler ordering a Ram ABS module recall, truck owners are allegedly stuck with vehicles less valuable than they should be because FCA failed to warn customers about the alleged HCU module and ABS module defects.
Ram ABS Module Class Action Lawsuit: The Plaintiff
The Ram class action lawsuit was filed by California plaintiff James Neu who owns a 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins diesel truck with about 24,000 miles on the odometer. Neu says he purchased his Ram truck new in 2018.
The plaintiff says the Ram 2500 began having problems in late-2022. The truck's warning lights indicated the ABS module, HCU module and cruise control failed. The plaintiff says he took the Ram truck to two Chrysler dealers and one independent mechanic to get repair estimates.
The Ram class action alleges the estimates ranged between $1,200 and $1,700.
According to the Ram ABS module lawsuit:
"Plaintiff Neu has parked his vehicle and is not driving it as of October or November 2022 as he is concerned for his and his family’s safety."
The plaintiff says if Chrysler would have warned him the Ram 2500 truck was defective, the plaintiff "would not have made the purchase, or would have paid less for the Vehicle."
The plaintiff doesn't allege how much less he would have paid for a truck he cannot drive.
In addition to not issuing a Ram ABS recall, FCA has also allegedly not offered trucks owners suitable repairs. This allegedly leaves Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 customers with huge repair bills once the warranties expire.
The class action also alleges Ram truck owners must choose to pay their own money for ABS and HCU replacements or drive trucks that are allegedly unsafe to drive.
According to the Ram ABS lawsuit, FCA sent dealers a STAR Online Publication titled, “Symptom/Vehicle Issue” as “C0020-01-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL – GENERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE.”
"Diagnostics for this DTC are currently under review. When working on a vehicle with an active C0020-01 and testing leads to replacement of both the HCU and ABS Module, order and replace the HCU first. Do not order or replace the ECU. Follow Service Information to replace and bleed the HCU. Then perform a test drive. If the DTC C0020-01 did not reset- repair is complete. If the C0020-01 did return active, replace the ECU and return the parts to FCA." — Ram TSB #S2005000004
The bulletin went on to say, "the ABS module will be on parts restriction through the STAR Center."
A later version of the TSB said the HCU and the ABS modules could be serviced as separate components.
The Ram ABS module class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Eastern Division): James Neu v. FCA US LLC, et al.
The plaintiff is represented by Barrack, Rodos & Bacine, Emerson Firm, PLLC, and Steckler Wayne Cherry & Love, PLLC.

JEEP AND RAM FUEL PUMP RECALL OVER BOSCH CP4.2 PUMPS
Affects 50,000 Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator and Ram 1500 vehicles with 3-liter diesel engines.

April 19, 2023 — A Jeep and Ram fuel pump recall affects about 50,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, while another 8,500 Mopar fuel pumps are recalled in the U.S. for the same failures.

The Jeep and Ram fuel pump recall includes these vehicles equipped with 3-liter diesel engines:

  • 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler
  • 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator
  • 2022-2023 Ram 1500
The Bosch CP4.2 fuel pumps can fail and send debris into the fuel systems. This will cause the vehicles to stall, and they cannot be restarted.

Fiat Chrysler opened an internal fuel pump investigation in February 2022 into 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler, 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator and 2022-2023 Ram 1500 vehicles following pump failures. Those fuel pump failures occurred in vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines.

FCA engineers investigated stall patterns which pointed to the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pumps.

Chrysler isn't aware of any crashes or injuries caused by fuel pump problems, but the automaker has received seven customer assistance records, 126 warranty claims and eight field reports.

A Jeep or Ram driver may hear noise coming from the fuel pump, see fuel leaking from the fuel pump and see malfunction warning lights.

Jeep and Ram owners who already paid for Bosch CP4.2 fuel pump failures should ask FCA about reimbursements.

FCA expects to mail Jeep and Ram fuel pump recall letters June 2, 2023, and dealerships will replace the high-pressure Bosch CP4.2 fuel pumps. It's also possible dealers will replace other fuel systems components if needed.

Jeep and Ram owners may call Chrysler at 800-853-1403 and ask about fuel pump recall number 01A.

Mopar Fuel Pump Recall
In a separate fuel pump recall, about 8,500 Mopar fuel pumps are recalled if the pumps have the part number, 68501449AA. The fuel pumps were sold for certain 3.0L diesel engines with part numbers: 05162119BB, 05162111CB, 05158048AH and 05158052AG.

Dealers will repurchase the high-pressure fuel pumps and uninstalled engines. For diesel engines already installed, FCA will replace the Bosch CP4.2 fuel pumps and possibly replace additional fuel system components.

Mopar customers may call 800-853-1403 and refer to fuel pump recall number 02A.

The same Jeep and Ram models were named in a recent Bosch CP4.2 fuel pump failure class action lawsuit.

131,000 Ram pickup trucks recalled by Stellantis
The recall warned an engine stall stemming from the issue could potentially occur

FOX Business Flash top headlines for April 19

A recall of certain Ram 1500 pickup trucks from 2021 has been issued by Stellantis’ FCA US LLC.

The recall concerns an issue related to the powertrain control module software that could "cause an incorrect fuel mixture condition in the engine" of affected vehicles, according to a notice available on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. The company issued it Saturday.
The number of 2021 Ram pickups with 5.7L eTorque engines potentially impacted totals 131,700, according to the safety recall report. They were produced in a timeframe spanning June 2020 to September 2021.

The recall notice said the "incorrect fuel mixture condition" that the affected pickup trucks may experience could result in them suffering an engine stall. That "may result in an unexpected loss of motive power while driving, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning," according to the safety recall report.

It discovered the problem after launching a probe in January. It used analysis of stall patterns and vehicle history to determine its source, according to the report.

To address the recall, the impacted vehicles will receive updated powertrain control module calibration software at no cost, according to the NHTSA notice.

Stellantis recalls Jeep and RAM for the second time due to risk of stalling
April 29, 2023
Auburn Hills, MI – April 29, 2023 – Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), which owns the Jeep and RAM brands, is recalling 45,711 SUVs and pickup trucks because they may lose power while driving due to a faulty fuel pump. This ups the risk of a crash and injury.
This recall seems to be an expansion of one conducted in November for the same issue and comes on the back of multiple customer complaints and warranty claims.
The list of the affected models includes:
  • 2021 – 2023 Jeep Gladiator
  • 2021 – 2023 Jeep Wrangler
  • 2022 – 2023 RAM 1500
Recall summary

All listed vehicles have a 3.0-liter diesel engine with a high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP). Its job is to collect fuel from the tank, compress it and deliver it to the engine, where it is used for combustion that moves the vehicle forward.
Just like in the previous recall, the pump may break apart, sending debris into the fuel system and clogging it. This can prevent fuel flow to the engine, causing the vehicle to stall.
The component behind the recall is the HPFP with part number 68501449AA.
Recall risks
All associated risks are described in the previous Jeep fuel pump recall.
Warning signs
Besides the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or the “Service Electronic Throttle” warnings on the dashboard, drivers may pick up on the “excessive noise” from the engine bay or notice a fuel leak around the high-pressure pump.
Background of the recall
This recall appears to expand on one done in November of last year due to the same issue. It is not clear what led to the expansion but the current recall includes additional model-years and comes on the back of “seven customer assistance records, 126 warranty claims, eight field reports and three other service records.” No accidents or injuries have been reported.
Other Jeep Wrangler recalls
The Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler model-years affected by this recall may also be part of a a different recall caused by the transmission that may overheat and cause the vehicle to catch fire.
Among other Chrysler recalls, the one from March this year caused by detaching rear spoilers is the most recent, as reported.
The repair
Dealers will replace the high-pressure fuel pump with an upgraded one. They will inspect the rest of the fuel delivery system and replace as needed. Everything will be done free of charge.
Owners should receive letters with more information on or before June 2, 2023.
