According to Sirius Satellite Radio, American rock and roll singer-songwriter Lou Reed is getting his own weekly show, Reuters reports. Dubbed “Lou Reed’s New York Shuffle,” the free-form radio show will premiere on Saturday at 7 p.m. EST on Sirius’ Disorder channel 70.

“I’ve always been a fan of eclectic radio, such as FM radio in the past when you could hear stations play widely divergent music, ranging from rock to country to jazz to opera,” Reed said in a statement, quoted by the same source. “We will try to bring Sirius’ listeners audio from all parts of the world that covers the whole musical spectrum,” he added.

Reed wills co-host the show with music producer Hal Willner, who recently collaborated with Reed on “Berlin,” a theatricalized concert version of the performer’s 1973 album of the same name. The film is due to open in New York and Los Angeles on July 18.

Other artists with Sirius Shows include E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt, folk rocker Steve Earle, David Johansen and Marky Ramone, and B-52s frontman Fred Schneider.

Reed broke new ground for the rock genre in several important dimensions, influencing the rock and roll movement in general, introducing more mature and intellectual themes to what was then considered a music genre for teenagers.

He had a huge success with the live “Rock ‘n Roll Animal” LP, recorded following the release of “Transformer”, which received vast FM airplay in the mid-to late ’70s. Reed teamed up with “The Killers” on a song called Tranquilize for their new compilation album “Sawdust,” which was released on November 13, 2007.

FCC Bounces Sirius Application for New Satellite

5.23.2008

Sirius will have to reapply if it wants to put up its FM-6 satellite.

The FCC has rejected its application to launch and operate the satellite, which is intended to help Sirius reduce the number of birds in its network. The commission said the application was defective and essentially invited the company to reapply.

The chief of the Satellite Division of the International Bureau Robert G. Nelson wrote to the company — under Sirius’ former name Satellite CD Radio Inc. — saying the application lacked the necessary technical information regarding parameters that would prevent orbital debris from becoming a problem. The purpose of those requirements is to help others evaluate the proposal for collision avoidance and safe flights.

“Although not grounds for dismissal, we request Satellite CD Radio to provide two additional clarifications in any future re-filing,” he wrote. Those include more info on what the company plans to do with this satellite after its projected service life.

“Satellite CD Radio should confirm the inclination of the disposal orbit, as well as provide any information it has supporting the long-term stability of the disposal orbit.”

It also asked for more technical information regarding the cross-polar isolation of its antenna.

Canadian Satellite Radio: Finally

on 2008/5/24 20:20:00
SkyNewswire.com)--In June, the CRTC granted satellite radio licenses to two groups - the CBC, which is partnered with New York-based Sirius, and CSR, which is partnered with Washington-based XM.

The federal cabinet has upheld the CRTC's decision to issue two new satellite radio licenses. As part of the deal, all applicants agreed to include more Canadian and French-language material. This is typical of Canadian media regulations and has made headway for the satellite radio push and representation. Groups such as Liberal MPs, Quebecers and other cultural groups did have some opposition to the deal. "In effect, the Americans have won…This is a black day," said Ian Morrison, spokesman for the lobby group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting.

SIRIUS' Alt Nation to become "Coldplay Nation" for ten days beginning June 13

AMSIRIUS' Alt Nation to become "Coldplay Nation" for ten days beginning June 13

NEW YORK, June 11, 2008
SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) today announced that Coldplay will take over SIRIUS' Alt Nation channel 21 for ten days.

Coldplay Nation will premiere on Friday, June 13 at 6:00 pm ET and will air through Sunday, June 22. The launch of Coldplay Nation coincides with the release of Viva La Vida, Coldplay's new album, which will be in stores June 17.

The channel will feature music from Viva La Vida as well as other Coldplay songs and will include personal introductions by members of the band, including lead singer Chris Martin. The band will also select songs by artists who have influenced them over the years and some of their favorite music from today.

Viva La Vida, Coldplay's fourth album, " ... was fueled by a desire to move from black and white into color," says Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. "Or, if you like, we decided to let our garden grow a little more unkempt. The bloodhound was let off its leash."

"Coldplay has found chart-topping worldwide success by creating one of the most distinctive sounds and styles in popular music today," said Scott Greenstein, SIRIUS President of Entertainment and Sports. "We are thrilled to give Coldplay and their fans a channel on SIRIUS where they can hear the band introduce their music in addition to the unique music always played on Alt Nation, uninterrupted and non-stop for an unprecedented ten full days."

Coldplay Nation continues SIRIUS' tradition of creating exclusive limited-run artist-branded channels dedicated to iconic musicians. SIRIUS has previously offered limited-run channels such as Radio R.E.M., Weezer Nation, Rolling Stones Radio, E Street Radio, Neil Diamond Radio, and JAY-Z Nation, among many others.

Sirius Canada boosts subscriber count by 250,000 over past eight months

June 12, 2008 - 11:59 am

By: THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - Satellite radio provider Sirius Canada says its subscriber count grew by more than 250,000 customers over the past eight months.

The latest results bring the company's total to 750,000 subscribers, Sirius said on Thursday.

"The last eight months were the strongest period of subscriber growth since launch and our success to-date has surpassed the expectations of the company's management and shareholders," said president and chief executive Mark Redmond.

Privately-owned Sirius is one of two subscription radio services operating in Canada, the other being XM Radio, a publicly traded company through Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (TSX:XSR).

In the United States, the two companies respective U.S. partners are involved in a drawn-out merger process that began over a year ago. The merger of XM and Sirius has received approval from the U.S. Justice Department, but stalled with regulators at the Federal Communications Commission.

Ownership of both entities differs in Canada, and for that reason both companies have said it won't affect their domestic operations.

Sirius Canada's is 40 per cent owned by CBC Radio, 40 per cent by Slaight Communications and 20 per cent owned by Sirius in the United States.

"At this point we're saying that we're not included in the merger in the U.S. It's probably too early to speculate what would happen," said Sirius spokesman Jeff Roman.

Sirius also plans to add 10 more full-time channels to its line-up, covering music, sports and talk programs.
