SUV plows into medical office near Cocoa
February 11, 2016
A 67-year-old woman is facing a traffic charge after her sport utility vehicle struck a medical office just north of Cocoa today, plowing through a front window and running over an exam table, authorities and witnesses reported.
SOURCEThe driver, identified as Lynn Cianciotto, of Cocoa, was not injured in the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators said Cianciotto lost control of her 2011 Dodge Nitro after making a right turn at the Globe Net Center shopping plaza located at 5455 U.S. 1.
The crash happened 10 a.m. at the medical office at 5455 U.S. 1 as Cianciotto was turning into the parking lot.
"She was charged with careless driving. She just hit the gas instead of the brake and just panicked and kept hitting the accelerator," said Kim Montes, spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol.
Brevard County Fire Rescue crews were called to the scene but canceled a short time later.
Investigators said Cianciotto struck two curbs as she tried to stop the SUV and then continued westerly into the front of the offices for Dr. Felix A. Sosa.
A witness inside the office said about five staff members were inside with at least one patient when the black Dodge Nitro came through the front window, barreling into an empty exam room and running over an exam table. No damage estimate was given. Cianciotto, who was wearing a seat belt, was ticketed and released.
