Takata Truck Carrying Airbag Inflators Explodes in Texas

Aug 29, 2016

A Takata truck exploded in Texas last week, causing one death and four injuries.

The truck was transporting airbag inflators and propellants and was operated by a subcontractor when it was traveling to a Takata plant in Eagle Pass, Texas. The accident occurred on August 22, according to local media, resulting in an explosion that also burned down one home. The embattled company that is at the center of a massive airbag recall confirmed that the truck was carrying airbag inflators and propellants containing ammonium nitrate but did not confirm the date and location of the accident.

Takata’s faulty airbags have been linked to at least 14 deaths and has resulted in the largest global recall in automotive history. Prolonged exposure of the faulty inflators to hot conditions and high humidity can cause the airbags to explode with excessive force, spraying shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Over 100 million vehicles worldwide have been recalled so far.

“Takata has strict safety procedures relating to the transportation of its products that meet or exceed all regulatory requirements,” the company said. “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who died as a result of this accident, and with the four people injured.”
