Toyota to ramp up Prius output, denies Nummi plan

Posted Wednesday, Jun 17, 2009, 10:47 am in Employee News

Reuters reports that Toyota Motor Corp is preparing to ramp up production of the Prius hybrid by adding weekend shifts and has denied a report that it was considering building the model at the Nummi factory in California held jointly with General Motors Corp.

“We are planning to produce the Prius at the Mississippi plant once the U.S. market recovers, and we are not considering production at Nummi,” a Toyota spokeswoman said. The majority of the Nummi plant production already is used by Toyota. GM produces one model there, the Pontiac Vibe, due to be discontinued next year.

Toyota builds 2,300 Prius cars a day, including overtime units, at its Tsutsumi and Fujimatsu factories. The third-generation Prius became Japan’s best-selling car after its debut in May, with sales of almost 11,000 vehicles. (Reuters)
