DETROIT - General Motors Corp. has held onto its crown as the world's top-selling automaker, beating Toyota Motor Corp. by about 3,000 vehicles.
Toyota had said during most of the day yesterday that its annual total was 9.37 million vehicles, up 6 percent from 2006. GM reported that its global sales had risen 3 percent to 9,369,524, making for a race that appeared too close to call.
But last night Toyota said it sold 9.366 million vehicles last year globally, giving GM the title for the 77th year.
